Roster Building/Team Building/Future Trade/Drafting thread.

If this team once again fails to proceed very far in the playoffs, what would you want them to do?

Amen. Try to move Reilly. Make him waive other teams do it all the time.
Exactly, I don’t understand why Leafs can’t make their players waive like other teams and yet at the same time Toronto is also known as a toxic and poisonous environment to attract players.

If Treliving went to Rielly and asked, would you waive and Rielly said no why would Treliving pursue a trade?
I figure a GM puts together a trade first and then asks that player to waive his NTC or NMC. Why risk informing a player that he may be on the block without having a tangible trade and destination already lined up? Seems risky to me given the potential for souring relations with that player.

When have they tried to 'make' a player waive in recent memory? They didn't "make" Marner waive - to try and do that would mean beginning that process last summer, and if he doesn't oblige then limiting his TOI this past year so he's less productive thus affecting his UFA ceiling. That's hardball, but this management group does not do that. Are other teams doing that? Not publicly at least not for high profile players of Marner's age. The lesson here is you simply cannot toss around full NTCs to players on their RFA contracts - its crippling. You may be better off trading a player's rights or holding out altogether for a limited NTC even if the AAV is incrementally higher. Hopefully we learn something as we negotiate with Knies.

Well, that's got all the red tape you would ever want.

Even if he is cleared, it's still from a PR perspective, pretty risky, and would he even want to restart his NHL career here?
Everyone of those players might be found not guilty, but they certainly aren’t innocent. Pulling a train on a women (be it a crazy women) is behaviour I would identify more with being perpetrated by a rogue motorcycle gang, not Canadian hockey players. If you want to know what’s wrong with the world today it’s that society has lost it’s moral compass………

Swing and miss for Brad again baby.

Buffalo quickly rejected the Leafs offer……….

That’s what I don’t understand while the rest of league can always trade their players with NTC or NMC and still attract players yet Leafs can never get their players to waive and still apparently(I don’t believe it) being known as a ‘toxic’ environment for players.
Which teams in the Leafs situation have had players with NMC always waive?

Yes but Buffalo is also in desperate need of a top 4 RHD which Carlo addresses, they're also in need of a #1 goalie, which Woll is your best available option. Mcmann gives you 20 goals making less then 2 million and you also get a legit top prospect who should be NHL ready in 2 years or less
It seems Buffalo has their top 4 RHD covered now.

Leafs don’t have much to trade, or anything they’d want to trade.
They were busy giving away all their assets to get to the 2nd round in 9 years.
Next rebuild, I don’t care what is happening, do not trade your 1st round picks until the team has shown it can get to the finals without trading them.

It doesn't help when you haven't drafted well

from 2018 to 2022 we had over
We had over 20 picks

Matthew Knies, Robertson are the only NHL players (Barely holding on to a roaster spot)
We are not getting any depth out of any players. In 2020 we had 11 picks. Nothing (RIP Amirov)

Certain GM was supposed to be a genius picking players, he wasn't.

If Dubas didn't pick Knies, he would have had to hear about it. Knies has been his greatest saviour

Seriously. I can't believe how upset people are over missing out on some of the softest players imaginable.

Paterka is soft, but he has upside. He has been trending the right direction in scoring wise
Noting also that Marner's departure is going to leavea. massive gap.

for all the players that are available or has been, he has the most upside

To those taking shots at Treliving for his work so far on *June 26th* - there's been a grand total of 8 trades in the entire league since March....what exactly were your expectations here? Maybe give him the draft and a few weeks of free agency before writing him off?

To the clown ridiculing his last two free agency's. Did you watch the playoffs? Did you watch Tanev be our best defender and an absolute shutdown beast? Did you watch Stolarz play unbelievable? Did you see Bobby Orr Benoit play amazing for a #6D? OEL play solid? Pacioretty?

Shredding him on June 26th because his last name isn't Dubas is comical.

I know people are anxious but everyone needs to take a deep breathe and simmer down.

I would have loved adding Marchment at that cost, no doubt. Let's all remember that it's June. Things will happen. Players will be signed and traded.

Peterka is a good player but if people are seeking that DNA change, he ain't it.

By this time next week we likely have 3-4 new players in this lineup and hopefully a trade or two to talk about as well.

Go Leafs Go!
