Roster Building/Team Building/Future Trade/Drafting thread.

If this team once again fails to proceed very far in the playoffs, what would you want them to do?

Kanes off ice antics aside, I think he gets overrated in terms of his on ice impact. There's comparable options available in free agency.

You can't use your cap appropriately if you're giving Marchand 9M. The idea not resigning Marner is to get better depth, not use it all on a 38 year old that doesn't PK or playing tons of minutes.

People seemgliny forgot about the Marleau fiasco.

It's true. But timing also plays a role. Leafs need to be competitive as possible over the next 2-3 seasons, so there's still the potential to get value from him at least over the next two playoff runs.

That said, it will be an awful contract, there's not much avoiding that. But he is a highly entertaining player and at minimum I think the fans are at least owed a good time

I don't doubt the urgency to keep adding players in our window but that much money for him is pretty insane and removes all the upside of not re-signing Marner. I think Marchand would do well in a proper cap hit/term deal at his age and regression arc.

It all comes down to this point because Treliving refused to really manage his team over the last couple off-seasons and right now it feels like a lot of scrambling and desperation.

Brandon Saad
James Van Riemsdyk
Victor Olofsson
Justin Brazeau
Gustav Nyquist
Andrew Mangiapane
Evgeny Dadonov
Brandon Tanev
Corey Perry
Mikael Granlund
Nikolaj Ehlers
Ryan McLeod

Who would you take a flyer on to fill out the roster?

Who would you not touch with a 10 foot pole?

Honestly, there isn’t anyone comparable to Kane in Free Agency. He’s got speed, he’s physical, will drop the gloves and can put up 40-50 points if healthy. Who as a free agent is even close?

Sure, it comes with discipline challenges on bad penalties, but there really isn’t that type of power forward available.

Tanev, Mangiapane, Granlund and Ehlers depending on price. I think Ehlers will want too much for us.

Perry meh.

McLeod and Comtois are guys I’d consider on cheap contracts.

The rest. Nah.

Out of curiosity - what about Kane makes him not politically correct?
He had some issues with his ex GF (not sure if he was found guilty, dont think so otherwise he'd be in jail) money problems on personal debt, and has been a labeled a lockeroom distraction for WPG, BUF, and SJS (3 of his 4 teams).

He was an immature teen/early 20s guy, then made dumb financial decisions and personal decisions which bled into his work. Since 2021 he's been a good player and good drama free player for the Oilers.

Id have liked to have added him if we could have gotten him for cheap.

An unfortunate thought crossed my mind today, there's probably a rising probability that the Leafs don't qualify Robertson to avoid arbitration. Otherwise they're planning on doing what they did with Lily (expect there's a lesser market for wingers than D men)

Middle six wingers are probably the most common option every free agency.

He has some snarl to his game, but so does Domi who just had a so-so season so that attribute isn't always defining quality we'd like. While I'm non fan of the Oilers front office there's a reason they just dumped him - he's a complete passenger offensively.

McLeod and Tanev, though I don't know why McLeod would be available.

Domi has snarl? Ok, he'll fight a couple of times a year, and avoids contact at all costs otherwise.

Kane had 95 hits in the playoffs.

Domi had 49 all year.

Kane.. a complete offensive passenger, scored at the same rate as Knies and Tavares this offseason. That's with Knies playing with Matthews and Marner..

They dumped him, because he was the only contract that made any sense, given they have to give Bouchard a raise... they needed to dump a body, that they probably would have kept, had they the cap room to do it.

Allegedly, some people think we need to get faster, and more physical this offseason. Kane would be a player that would help in that regard. He's a legit heavyweight fighter, who is a decent hockey player as well. Honestly, who else is available, who can play that type of heavy game? Name one.

Mirtle thinks it'll be lower than some expect. Likely in the 8ish range over 7.years.

Personally I'd strongly consider it, he's one of the bigger names who can actually outplay his aav value.

It also frees up another Leafs D man to be sent out for a centre
Trade Reilly for picks and sign Ekblad

It's scary that this a likely roster they could roll out if they don't make a big trade.

The team just stays away from problematic individuals with past history of off-ice troubles, even if other teams acquire/sign these guys and these type of players are productive for a team.

Kane had a sexual assault case with his previous girlfriend Anna Kane, which was I think settled out of court.

Leafs wont touch players with prior history of such instances off the ice.

Sometimes its for the best but we do miss out on guys like Perry, Kane, who can help them team since the organization wont sign them due to past off ice issues.

At $8 ish I think the Leafs need to try and sign him. They can look to move some else if needed but ai think if all he costs is money it's worth the gamble. Brad is looking good with his defenseman ufa so far so he could be a home run if he works out.

I think Leafs need someone on the top line wing to replace Marner. I don't love Domi in that spot. I don't think he is consistent enough. I would love Brad to try and get P Kane. He may be happy to play with Matthews and Knies.

From your list I would love Ehlers and Granlund on the 2nd line with Nylander. I think they could gel together better than McMann and Tavares with Nylander.

Depending on what happens with Cowan I wouldn't mind Mangiapane and McLeod with Domi on the 3rd line although if Leafs can get Tavares on a manageable contract that may be preferred.

Would love B Tanev on 4th line and Perry as this years Pacioretty although I think the Leafs should extend Pacioretty over Perry given his performance last season and age. Perry is ready for coaching.

I was responding to this post:
Well, because in Politically Correct Toronto (especially applies to many posters here) it's unacceptable to employ any player who exhibits any signs of "toxic masculinity". Thus we will never have a winner.
No one on this board has claimed they don't want Kane on the team because he is politically incorrect. I wanted to know what this poster was concerned about.
