Roster Building/Team Building/Future Trade/Drafting thread.

If this team once again fails to proceed very far in the playoffs, what would you want them to do?

Did Marchand stop killing penalties? I remember he was absolutely deadly for SHG and even had one in this year's playoffs.
He looks like he's running on fumes and cashing in on a big paycheck

He will never play as good as he did in the playoffs again, and his salary won't come off the cap if he retires.

Still fantastic defensive metrics in really tough usage even if he's not the fastest skater. Hard to fake the metrics and I really didn't like that roster last year. That team is basically Hughes.
This is somewhat funny of you to say considering Cirelli’s metrics show he was better than Nylander this season. Are we believers in analytics now or just when it comes to Suter?
Were Faulk and Manson pending UFAs? I believe Faulk was.

Burns and Savard are older. Burns was kinda given away and the Savard to TBL deal? I believe that was more of a rental situation but it did involve a 1st.

Durzi was legit given away for only a 2nd

Marino was a 2nd+ on a down year for NJD
The point being, as you’ve realized, is there isn’t a precedent for a 2RD for a forward trade.

1 year 8M
2 years 7M
3 years 6.5M

8M x4 is absolutely insane to think about, 37 years old...I like him and I think there is intangibles etc but father time is undefeated.

Cirelli being better than Nylander this season defensively? Wouldn't debate that for a moment, he's up for a Selke.

Cirelli being worth Nylander? Also wouldn't debate it. He's probably what? 6th best RW in the league?

You are banking on Marchand being good for years 1 and 2 of that deal. Past that point it really doesn't matter what happens as the Leafs are cooked with an elderly D core already.

You brought up “metrics” regarding Suter’s defensive play and said “you can’t fake metrics” - which I wholeheartedly agree with. Coincidentally, since we’re both avid “metrics” believers all advanced “metrics” show that Cirelli had a greater overall impact than Nylander this season. Not defensive impact, overall game.

Hard to fake the metrics

Last 3 off-seasosn were long and drawn out with nothing happening for the Leafs. The guy just can't get anything done roster management wise I guess

Which metrics/source are you using in this case? Not saying I don't believe you but I'd like to see it.

I'd have to imagine the offensive metrics would show Nylander ahead, 84 pts and 45 goals versus Cirelli being a defensive beast.

Corey Perry has lost multiple steps since his peak. Marchand wants to paid like a 1st line winger, if he ages like Perry the Leafs are screwed.
Not disputing that, but one never kniws when the decline will hit, it’s nit. Given us all I’m saying, looked great in the playoffs, that’s indisputable……

I think all the lalk of regression is premature. The fact of the matter is that with an injured Matthews and little contribution from Marner, we came closer than any other team to dethroning the champs. One goal away from taking a 3-0 series lead.

If our cap space is used wisely, next season doesn't have to be a throw away season.

The Matthews point is an excellent one.
He was just about as low on his performance spectrum this season and there's a decent chance he's alot better next season.
Matthews with an improved season and Knies taking another step are two things that are definitely realistic, that could somewhat make up for the loss of Mitch.
