Roster Building/Team Building/Future Trade/Drafting thread.

If this team once again fails to proceed very far in the playoffs, what would you want them to do?

Have a feeling people are going to be fairly disappointed.

I think the leads are going to sign some mid tier players just to get them through the season.

Trades are not going to bring back star players as the leads do not have much to offer. I think where things might happen when teams want to dump mistake contracts. Other than that wait for next year.
I agree. Despite what a lot of people like to throw around in trade proposals, this team really has f*** all for expendable assets to trade.

And the UFA prices are going to be absurd

We're going to have to gamble on 1-2 cap-expensive reclamation players via trade IMO. Similar to the prices Marchment and Kane went for. We just have to pray it turns out relatively well for us - or the risk isn't too great. We're not getting there via the top end of the UFA market route, and we certainly do not have the capital to lure big prime players in at premium trade prices. They're likely to bring in 1-2 pieces via free agency a la Mangiapane, Raddysh, Tanev, etc, plus 1-2 via trade, like Coyle, Copp, Nelson,

I don't care for Kane but we are about to dump 9M for a 37 or 38 year old player. Desperate for sure.

I see the benefits of adding Marchand at that price. Pre-cap increase that $9 million price tag isn’t quite as shocking. Secondly, if he was actually playing for us the next 3-4 years, I can see the benefit of having that culture shift rub off on Cowan and Knies, not to mention the leadership we have now.

It's lazy roster building and not one that is very good. Trelivings motto though. 9M in insanely bad for Marchand. 8M is already bad enough.

i'm not too keen to start dumping 4 and 5 million into wingers as a first move, but i wouldn't have minded some of these players, though E.Kane and Marchand on same team might be asking for a disaster.

Tre needs to get at least Knies out of the way quick to have clarity on what he has to move forward with and avoid an offer sheet.

I have a feeling we are going to be sorely disappointed and see something like this over the next 10 days:
- one international signing - Shabanov or some SHLer to give a shot to - though sounds like he is Phily bound.
- one RFA signing of the three unqualified or an RFA/RFA swap with another team - Holmberg/Robertson
- a couple of depth forward UFA signings, like Kunin level
- JT gets sorted at a number generally not well received by the fan base
- maybe Marchand

and the rest will be a slow burn over the summer, maybe dumping the likes of Jarnkrok and Kampf and searching for scraps

It's kinda everything that people on this board have been clamoring for, isn't it? A complete attitude change, leadership change, a guy with a proven record of delivering in the playoffs. On top of that, you weaken our top competitor and add the guy who has been killing us in the playoffs for what feels like a decade.

"Fair" price on him would be something like $7.5 over 3 years. So you overpay by an extra year and $1.5per and in return you get all of the above. Seems like a reasonable move if you can get it done.

I think you’re being overly judgmental on Treliving when nothing has actually happened and he’s been brought in as a GM putting small touches on a contender up to this summer with Shanahan’s dismissal.

To your point though he does seem to be losing momentum in the public discourse as someone who can make a bold move.

The way I see it there are two ways to go. First is the Frankenstein approach where we just start patching up the program with big UFA buys to be as business as usual for summer 2026 and beyond, spending big cap increase dollars to try and get ahead of the curve again. Get in the market for McDavid and Eichel and whomever next summer.

Or we do a Bruins style retool and start selling off a lot of the outer core and support pieces. Get younger leaner, and be prepared to take a step or two back. The risk here is we are out of pocket on draft picks unless we crash land in lottery territory. The second is it puts us out the running for big free agent hunting if we aren’t a playoff team or at least less attractive as a ready made “winner.”

Lol yeah I am. He has instilled zero confidence to give me hope . But I also preface my thoughts that things can improve and it's early. His track record however in the offseason is mild at best since here. Using free agency to build his team year after year, zero assets recuperating, zero foresight. Just "we will see what happens"

I just want an active, aggressive and shit to get done. So far it's more or the same... If July 1st rolls and he still hasn't started making changes, i think it's time to change managers as soon as possible.

Agreed. It’s a pivotal summer and I think we’re all antsy to put a name on the depth chart and start honing in on what this will look like.

Hey guys, I follow both Sabres and Leafs - some local radio people said they heard the Rangers and Leafs were the teams that seemed most interested in Peterka. Does that make any sense to you? I guess to replace Marner?

I think something around Carlo and McMann might be a good start? Any thoughts on that?

Buffalo might be trying to get Schneider + Cuylle from NYR, this might be TOR version on that…
How’s Buffalo feeling about Jack Quinn and Peyton Krebs?

At least Laughton and Carlo will be here next year or can be used as trade chips this summer. Years past we would have gotten 20 games out of trading a first round pick and then see the asset walk off in free agency.

I have had a weird feeling for some time, that we are just going to miss out on what we need to do here, and end up with a patch work roster. Treliving seems to be in on everything, and accomplish little.. back to his Calgary days too.

I've gotten used to it to be honest.

How many times did we go through a Dubas summer needing a 3C? top 6 LW? Top 4 RD? Season opens up and the holes are there.

Let's see how it goes.

I feel like we have 2 good-very good goalies, a solid defense but forward group needs a lot of work.
