Roster Building/Team Building/Future Trade/Drafting thread.

If this team once again fails to proceed very far in the playoffs, what would you want them to do?

If the Leafs get one of Fabbro or Ekblad maybe Buffalo takes Carlo+McMann for McLeod.

It worries me going after a guy who Edmonton decided couldn't help them win a cup at 2M but they're desperate for C's.

I wonder if Vancouver would do Robertson for Raty. Both RFAs and would be even better if Vancouver wanted Kampf for their 4th line for a pick as well.

Also, I'm surprised Manthas name hasn't been thrown around much. Before his injury last season he was off to a hot start and could be a good buy low candidate on a 1 or 2 year deal.

Players I would target:

Raddysh - 6’3 with some offensive upside in bottom 6

RFA:Cody Glass

Jeannot:

RFA: Morgan Geekie

RFA:

RFA: Huge guy with offense

CJ said Sam Bennett’s contract with the Panthers is as good as done. Ekblad is basically begging the Panthers to re-sign him so I don’t see him going anywhere and will probably sign at a discount.

Marner
Bennett
Karlsson
Duchene
Ekblad
Marchment
Ehlers (wants a quite market)

It is slim picking in free agency…

I can’t say I have much faith in Treliving to do anything creative.

That's what some of have been saying all along.

Leafs fans are going to see how good the pro-scouts are for the team.

I hope they target players 30 and younger.

It isn't about the most talented players, it has to be about building a character team, and they need glue guys.

We can start evaluating Treliving's foray into free wallets.

I don't know how the Flyers' FO views Tippett, but their fans seem to have soured on him - still very young and signed through his prime. Seems like a player that would thrive under Berube.

The Flyers are consequently looking for a goaltender upgrade, which we would happen to have available.

Another thing that I was wondering about, was Vancouver. They're looking for a center, would they perhaps be interested in Domi? A swap of Domi for Garland would give us a right handed shot to play with Matthews, who also happens to be a very grindy-type, which Berube loves - and Matthews has had the most success with.

Could take it a bit further and add Rielly for Hronek, but that's most likely a pipedream.

Are the Rangers still trying to move more CAP, how about Lafreniere's contract? I'd gamble on his potential, once again a very Berube-like grindy player. Something around McMann and a pick or prospect?

As for the free agents this year, I'd be very interested in Connor Brown, Tanner Jeannot and Cody Glass - plus if the price is right, Andrew Mangiapane.

For depth lower in the lineup, there are players available, like Eyssimont, Bastian, Lorentz, Sanford etc... lots to choose from.

There are many ways to improve the team, just gotta look and listen. A recent example of shrewdness is the trade yesterday made by Briere (Zegras).

I wouldn’t be shocked if Matthews leaves and follows Marner in 3 years
I would be shocked if he stayed to be honest. By then we would have gotten 11 years out of him
Considering how little he has accomplished, I may argue he maybe gone next year he if doesn't come through with something

Fans are losing patience with him and so has management.

Rather trade him and get some assets back before his game completely falls off a cliff, but that won’t happen……
I think this is a possibility the summer before the last year on his deal. It depends where the team is. If Tre screws this summer up they probably miss the playoffs by 2027.

Why wait, he can ask to leave asap imo. It’s obvious by his “too many passengers” comment that he’s delusional and can’t admit it’s not his teammates that choked, it’s the guy in the mirror. The sooner Captain Arrogant is gone the better…..
I agree. As soon as Marner gets set up somewhere I’d approach Matthews before the 3 years is up and asks if he’d like to join him.

If a bad season means a step back and it leads to the likes of 34, 88, and 44 waiving to get out of Dodge, well that would be better than qualifying for the playoffs. Nothing changes without change…….

My wet dream would be them being able to do a sign and trade on Marner with Captain Arrogant being part of the package, now that would be like winning the lottery……..

Honestly maybe playing around some veterans like Matthews, Tavares, Rielly, etc, Zegras would have developed a better overall game. I definitely wouldn’t have been against giving him a shot, who knows he could have developed into a key offensive player.

Given our lack of quality draft picks, our bare prospect pool and having an aging NHL roster, that would have been a good player to bet on IMO.
Imagine looking at the spoiled & petulant Matthews/Marner/Nylander, and then looking at the arrogant Zegras and thinking he would've developed better with that group. What??

Hard to keep track, but from what I gather from Twitter etc, a lot of teams are dangaling their 1st round pick, especially with it being a weaker draft.
Any pick after 15 isn't worth the assets, unless Carter Bear falls past 20 or so, which is possible due to the nature of his injury (partial Achilles tear)

I agree 100%. He’s not the answer here.

They need to get the ball rolling on the right trade and get back the pieces needed and start a rebuild

Nylander will be happy to go I’m sure and will be worth something as well

The core failed here and the bad contracts combined with the cap not increasing made it impossible to succeed.
