If this team once again fails to proceed very far in the playoffs, what would you want them to do?

You're probably right. Although Tre did trade for Huberdeau once, and I could see Huberdeau having interest in Toronto where he would at least be playing with talent almost as good as he did in Florida. Convincing Rielly of Calgary would be the toughest part imo.

In admission that its probably a stupid idea, I still want to flesh out these potential lines. Huberdeau would almost certainly help the PP and if Calgary retains say $1.5m the contract isnt as bad if Rielly is going the other way.

Lets say your Tippett idea happens, or another similar style winger is acquired:

X-Matthews-Domi
Knies-Glass-Nylander
Huberdeau-Cowan-Tippett
Tanev-Laughton-X

McMann is probably one of the X's. If you get another winger for Matthews, Domi could play the role of a poor man's Bennett on the Huberdeau line.

Or if your Tippett deal doesnt happen:

Huberdeau-Matthews-Domi
Knies-Glass-Nylander
Cowan-Tavares-McMann
Tanev-Laughton-X
Huberdeau was the key player for Tkachuk who had an unprecedented career season and was a UFA, so, Treliving signed him to a huge deal to not look like an idiot, and then Huberdeau not only fell back to earth, he got worse than he had been his entire career for Calgary.
at 32 @ 10.5 for 5 more seasons to go, I'd expect Anderson along with him to compensate unless there was serous retention.

in your lineup above Huberdeau would be the top line LWer and we'd hope for a resurgence with Mathews with or without Tippett

Then we'll have to agree to disagree. Danault Trochek, Kadri, are a completely differenr player from everyone else above. Along with guys like Cirelli, Pageau (theres a good one who was traded albeit as a rental), Horvat (another rental that ended up signing for much more than Danault) Couturier, J. Staal (of a few years ago)

Danault as a 3rd. line center would be a very nice piece.

You'd line him up against offensive players.

Produces better in the playoffs.

Yeah he’s alright. Just using some placeholder names because who knows how it’ll pan out but if the Leafs wanted to remake the DNA of the forward group you’d expect something like:

Marchand, Bennett, Jeannot, Mangiapane, B. Tanev.

Where you get a club pack of players with a similar mentality that can alter more than one line of the team, maybe bring out some snot and snarl from those existing like Domi, Laughton and even a Matthews.

2 things come to mind

Ekholm was extended right before UFA and just ahead of TDL in year 1 of the deal the Preds traded him.

Burke saying sometimes someone isn't a fit and you just gotta move off of a player, this was also about a year into acquiring Versteeg.

I think with Domi, he was alright but if we don't love him, move him.
Good examples, but it's not often A GM will do the 180 like that, but maybe this is one of those cases.

However, I would have driven him to the airport after Game 4 against Ottawa.

He's Kerfoot + stupid penalties.

I don't want to hear about the Leafs "Lack of assets" EVER again.

Because It is not f***ing real, It has never been real.

But if you ever needed 100% proof that It is NOT f***ing real you just saw a 24 year old forward with 2 60+ point seasons get GIFT WRAPPED to Philadelphia.

The "Lack of assets" narrative needs to die because It is bullshit.
If any GM in the NHL believed that Zegras is a consistent 60 point forward he would have fetched more in trade.

Some cases from the past few years:

Bunting in Carolina

Neiderreiter in Nashville

Some cases from last summer that also could move:

Arvidsson in Edmonton

Duclair with NYI

It might not just be Tree either, he and Berube likely talked it over at the end of the season...I would not be surprised if Berube and you are of the same mind. I think Domi has some speed, good passing but doesn't shoot enough and takes some really bad/stupid penalties.

Trade Carlo, sign Fabbro?

Or try to get Severson in a soft deal?
if we moved Carlo I'd try to get both Fabbro and Ekblad or Ekblad and Perbix (likely a lot cheaper than Fabbro) at least and reshape the RHD.
pairs would be far better and actually look like an upper 3rd Defense instead of a middle bottom 3rd (league wide)
Rielly - Ekblad
McCabe - Tanev
OEL - Fabbro/Perbix

We’ll probably sign Mangiapane, Smith and Perbix in free agency, roll with these lines and call it a first round exit.

Knies - Matthews - Domi
Mangiapane - Tavares - Nylander
McMann - Laughton - Smith
Holmberg - Kampf - Jarnkrok

Rielly - Carlo
McCabe - Tanev
Ekman Larsson - Perbix

Stolarz - Woll

With what is available in free agency, it is a no brainer.

Keep in mind, a player being available in free agency doesn't mean he has any interest in signing with the Leafs.

So one cannot just blindly point out another player and say sign him instead.

You build piece by piece, and sometimes you have to use seconds to finish the job, knowing you'll replace it when a better option comes up.

Going to use Panthers as an example again.

They had players that were unwanted or on waivers.

So if the price is right, why not.

Maybe he will turn into our version of Frosling or Rodrigez

I personally dont believe Rielly is as bad as ya'll do, but if Calgary retains a million or two on Huberdeau I'd bet on him being more useful for the money than Rielly is. I wouldn't need a piece like Andersson coming back as compensation if there's slight retention.

The more I think about it, the more I think Huberdeau taking Marner's place would work. Matthews is a much better goal scorer than Tippett/Duclair who Huberdeau had success with, Domi can play like a poor man's Bennett there. Huberdeau is also great on the PP.

In Calgary he hasnt had anyone to play with, and nobody even on another line to take away matchups. If he plays with Matthews, then teams will have to decide between that line or a Knies-Nylander line to shut down.

Oh absolutely. Danault would be a perfect get but he's not available for anything Toronto would give
