If this team once again fails to proceed very far in the playoffs, what would you want them to do?

Me too. I think that it almost certainly happens in this market. If I'm the Kings or Canes I'd happily pay the 4x (late) 1sts and cap hit it would take to get him out of Toronto.

And a rival team could offer something in the 2x 1sts, 1x 2nd & 3rd range that would get matched but make the Leafs cap situation tough
I see a team offering him 9.3Mx5. The compensation is a 1st/2nd/3rd. Leafs would be forced to match but they'd screw up their cap structure.

Thats still such an easy match for Toronto.

Something under the $11.7m threshold (2 1sts+), while an overpayment for the player, would at least make Toronto have to think hard. That compensation is brutal for the Leafs if its from a team like LA/CAR

I mean trading Carlo or McCabe + to get a top 6 forward and turning around and signing Ekblad/Prov would be a decently smart move from Trev.

Yes they match but it's very uncomfortable for the team. Luckily Carolina doesn't have the picks for that. LAK, MTL and NJ are the only playoff teams that can do it as of today.

The picks would be 2026 (and 2027 for the additional 1st) so the Canes could do it.

I also wonder about Boston. They have their 2026 picks, as well as the Leafs 1st which would become more valuable without Knies on the roster

Moving Carlo for a 2C or legit top-6 forward would be a win but I thought he had a NTC.

Carlo to Buffalo makes a lot of sense. They have a bunch of forwards the Leafs will be interested in like Tuch, McLeod and Peterka.

I don't even want to imagine the plus but if Brad somehow turned Carlo + into Peterka or Tuch....

I was referring to 9.3Mx5.

Carolina can't do a 2x1sts+2nd+3rd either because they don't have their 2026 2nd.

If Boston offer sheets Knies I am not matching that. I'm taking that chance at a top 5 pick. They just finished bottom 10 while playing 3/4 of the season with Marchand, Coyle and Carlo. They don't have any prospects that are going to step up and change their trajectory this season. Knies doesn't replace all those losses.

So he'd replace marner's money?

Treliving just has to get in front of it if he is capable.

Carolina has their 2026 2nd, but I just double checked and they dont have their 2026 3rd. At least according to PuckPedia. So youre right regardless, although getting their 3rd back wouldnt prove difficult.

Looking at that roster they massively underachieved and they want to trade pick 7 for help now. With how trash the east is (assuming a rebound year from Swayman), that Bruins squad should definitely be a playoff team

Well, Toronto tried to get Marchment and that was a player they wanted, but failed for whatever reason. Apparently trading him to another tax-free state was important to Nill since he took a discount.

But the player personal between Marchment and Zegras is night and day. I think Toronto is done with soft 1 style of play forwards.

Trying means nothing. They gotta get it done. We need talent regardless and buying low on these players doesn't come often. There's always a mix we need. But sure, can't wait for all the tough skilled 2way talent to fall in his lap.

Not saying Zegras was the guy, but he was among the better players to get at a low exchange.

My bad there!

Who underachieved? The question mark for Swayman was always "can he play a starters workload?" and he answered that question.

Geekie and Pastrnak had career years. Lindholm increased his production year over year.

The one difference is Hampus Lindholm missed 3/4 of the season and McAvoy missed 30 games.

I mean you said it right there, thats a lot of games without your best 2 d-men.

I'm not going to hold the season against Swayman when he had no training camp. If he's shit again this year then yea sure he's a fraud.

Pasta is one of the best players in the world. Their defence is still solid even without Carlo. I'm not saying Marchand isnt a huge loss, but in Boston he was nowhere near the rejuvenated player that he became in Florida.

If you add Knies to that group thats 100% a playoff team, hell depending what the Leafs do I'd likely bet that Boston team finishes ahead of Toronto (if they'd successfully OS Knies)
