Roster Building/Team Building/Future Trade/Drafting thread.

If this team once again fails to proceed very far in the playoffs, what would you want them to do?

He'll fit right in lol.

In all seriousness, yea he's injury prone (the name is a funny coincidence) but if you slot him at 2C with talent he'll outproduce the cap hit for sure. He's not a guy I'd want in the bottom 6 for the reasons you listed

I don't think it's top 6 / bottom 6, you need a top 9 or top line + "middle 6"

I think the closest I can think of is St.Louis when they won their cup, Bozak being apart of that 3rd line was a difference maker.

Let's say Glass is 2.5M and 12M combined for Marchand+Tavares. Then they trade Woll+Cowan for Tippett+Hathway.

Domi-Matthews-Tippett
Knies-Glass-Nylander
Marchand-Tavares-McMann
Tanev-Laughton-Hathaway
I'm still a big advocate for keeping the goaltending as is (good goalies are hard to find. Woll + Stolarz with their injury histories are guys who work well together).

But the idea of Tippett made me think of one of his old linemates, Huberdeau. If we lose out on JT and Marchand, would we trade Rielly for Huberdeau with a million or two retained?

I genuinely think all 4 parties say no to that. Calgary doesn’t want to deal with Toronto and probably doesn’t want to retain. Treliving probably never wants to see Huberdeau again. Rielly probably has no interest in going to Calgary and Huberdeau probably has no interest in going to a big market like Toronto just to become a whipping boy.

Marner is a clown.

Going to VGK?

f*** him. He's so cliche. I should have been harder on him during his time in TOR.

He will no doubt be the biggest booing target in leafs history.

No he isn’t, stop making shit up and be realistic. He’s not going to get booed in Toronto.

He’s going to have a sudden and mysterious “injury” before every scheduled game at Scotiabank.

You're probably right. Although Tre did trade for Huberdeau once, and I could see Huberdeau having interest in Toronto where he would at least be playing with talent almost as good as he did in Florida. Convincing Rielly of Calgary would be the toughest part imo.

In admission that its probably a stupid idea, I still want to flesh out these potential lines. Huberdeau would almost certainly help the PP and if Calgary retains say $1.5m the contract isnt as bad if Rielly is going the other way.

Lets say your Tippett idea happens, or another similar style winger is acquired:

X-Matthews-Domi
Knies-Glass-Nylander
Huberdeau-Cowan-Tippett
Tanev-Laughton-X

McMann is probably one of the X's. If you get another winger for Matthews, Domi could play the role of a poor man's Bennett on the Huberdeau line.

Or if your Tippett deal doesnt happen:

Huberdeau-Matthews-Domi
Knies-Glass-Nylander
Cowan-Tavares-McMann
Tanev-Laughton-X

If they sign JT at 6x4 or whatever it feels/sounds like they need to do to sign him, or even something close to the Nelson deal, then all the DNA change stuff was BS.
I don't think that's entirely fair, Moving on from Marner is a massive change to the DNA & roster.

Tavares being at half his cap hit makes him a welcomed player & the center market is too thin to just move on from him right now.

Chicago walked away from Strome's 3.6M QO and he got 3.5M in UFA.

Seattle walked away from Geekie's 1.4M QO and he got 2Mx2 in UFA.

I would think he gets >2.5M given the limited supply in the market. What makes me hesitant is why wouldn't a team have just traded a 6th or 7th for his rights if they valued him at 2.5M+.
I'd give him 2.5 x 2. No point going for a 1 year where we give him a chance, he breaks our and then we're forced to pay a guy with zero track record big bucks. Give him the McMann/Benoit special. We can always bury him in the minors if he sucks.

I have combed the league and there isn't a similar RS winger available. You're also probably not getting him without moving Cowan. Cowan also probably isn't a C at the NHL level - London did play him at C a few games this season, I wish Toronto would have stepped in and asked that he play C for the whole year.
McMann is probably one of the X's. If you get another winger for Matthews, Domi could play the role of a poor man's Bennett on the Huberdeau line.

Trevor Zegras is close to getting traded per Friedman.

Don't think we would have interest would we?
I don’t see Treliving having any interest in him. But I wouldn’t mind taking a chance on him, we do have a spot open on the left wing.

If Tre promised him a chance to play between Knies and Nylander I could see him taking a 2.5Mx2. I do worry that Glass would see the opportunity in Toronto if they re-sign Tavares and be concerned about who he'd be playing with if/when he is moved to the 3rd line. I see a team like Philly making a ton of sense for him due to their winger depth - he'll basically be guaranteed one of Konecny, Tippett or Foerster.

Leafs could act as a clearing house to facilitate trades.

3 retention spots open.

Just don't replace marner nor Tavares, just be a bottom feeder for a year.

they don't have their draft pick, trying to be bad would be an insane move. They have to keep trying to win now at this point.

The center position just feels so crucial for us at this current juncture.

If we hit on it, there's a clear path to being a pretty damn good team and putting together a deep forward group.

But it also looks like this will not be such an easy task and there's scenarios where it could be underwhelming.

Losing Mitch for nothing will suck but the easiest way to stay good is if we can build three to four strong lines and have the ability to come at teams in waves.

Having Johnston-Cirelli-Tavares 1/2/3 signed for under <20M until Tavares retires would be so good. Those 3 combined for 98 goals this season which is the same amount the Oilers got from Draisaitl/McDavid/Nuge for 31.625M.

Athletic posted an article about how the leafs should be interested in Peterka, they could offer a package around Carlo.

Couldn't even imagine what the + with Carlo would be but Knies - Matthews - Peterka could be fun!

Would love Johnston but there’s no way this team trades Matthews.

I'll respectfully disagree. I think moving just one guy is scapegoatism at its worst...

It also begs the question: if there were other options, would that make it more likely to move on from Tavares, and what does that say about him?

It's a rare scenario, but I think in this case, change almost for the sake of it is a better option because at least you're not locked into the same guy who's been here for so much disappointment.

I also think that for him, it would be a better choice to get a new start at more money and go be the Marleau in Utah or even San Jose, where he nearly signed before.
