Roster Building/Team Building/Future Trade/Drafting thread.

If this team once again fails to proceed very far in the playoffs, what would you want them to do?

Granlund also can play wing. So he’s a versatile piece. I’d be very interested

I really hope the Leafs give him an offer he can't refuse. If love to try something new. Sounds like they can take or leave Tavares so that's hopeful that they feel good about an alternative to him at least.

There must be something in the room that Berube has picked up on. I have heard Kypreos say there is entitlement with Tavares. Basically he expects to be on PP1 which is where he gets alot of points. He’s not nearly as effective 5 on 5

That would surprise me, but if true, get him out of here.

Perhaps it’s a blessing to reset and have Marner and Tavares walk to get the right culture going

Nylander seems to be immune to goings on of the room. He’s never going to be a plus or minus.

I get the feeling Matthews rides the highs and lows a lot more. Hopefully, with a better culture, we see a different Matthews.

Players like Perry and Marchand I think can be a calming presence for Matthews. They are playoff warriors and I’d sign them both. If Perry doesn’t work out you just terminate the contract. It’s a no lose situation for the Leafs

Matthews is the captain. He needs to set the culture. 'Leading by example' is the worst thing you can say about a captain. That's the bare minimum. I've heard people say that about Tavares and Matthews' 4nations teammates said the same about him.

Perry would at least guarantee us a Stanley cup final appearance.

We don't necessarily need to add big players but we need to add more players who can hunt pucks and win puck battles.

Florida actually dumps the puck in more than just about any team in the league but they get in on the forecheck, win pucks and control possession.

This twitter account breaks down X's and O's really well and does a good job of explaining what makes Florida so effective.

Seeing Mangiapane's name pop up, so watched some highlights and looking for a comparison.

Does Micheal Bunting fit?

Around the same size, same age, close to the same career shooting %, score alot of their goals in tight.

Looks like Mangiapane might be a faster skater.

A lot of the ability to play that style, is having the speed to close the distance fast.

If you dump it in and send a big fridge of a man who hits hard, but gets there late he wont get you the puck OR have a chance to force the D-man into making a bad play.

Floridas top 3 lines could all skate, and almost everyone has good edge work.

Maybe we should be looking at the NHL tracking data to look for guys with high speed bursts and speed combined with hits?

Yep we need to prioritize getting more speed into the lineup.

It's not just puck pressure. The thing that Florida did far better than any other team is their off-puck swaps. They always had high support in the middle, which mitigates the risk of being overly aggressive.

I think he would look really good playing alongside Tavares on the third line. Would like someone physical on the other side. I’ve mentioned a third line of Mangiapane - Tavares - Pospisil a few times around here. I think it would be pretty good.

Weird name, but Kotkaniemi seems like he may be a buyout candidate as he is so cheap.
Any interest in bringing him in to play 3W/4C beside Tavares? He is fast, and can swap out some defensive C duties with Tavares as he continues to slow down.

Another guy (who may not be qualified) is Morgan Barron. 6'4 C/W, 5th fastest top speed among forwards in the playoffs, and 7th most 22+ bursts. Is 26, and could be a good 'bulldog' who still has some potential untapped upside.

Perry had a great playoff and he is slow AF. Every bit of Bennett crap in the crease he did right back. and Florida didn't like it. They don't lack the speed, they are just a bit light on compete. You can't build a club for a single opponent and besides the Leafs didn't lose because they were slow. They had weak goaltending and the bottom six didn't score at all. Guys with motors and top six guys that aren't afraid.. Guys that want to win, not just thugs and not just jackrabbits.
