Roster Building/Team Building/Future Trade/Drafting thread.

If this team once again fails to proceed very far in the playoffs, what would you want them to do?

I think if we were to get out from Rielly, I'd prefer to go after Provorov over Ekblad.

Unless we were to move OEL or Carlo in a trade. If we signed Ekblad our third pairing would be for a combined 6.9m with OEL - Carlo

I think one of those guys ultimately has to end up becoming trade bait if they hope to make as many improvements as needed. Signing a top 4 D + trading one of the other guys for a centre fixes a lot of problems

I felt in the playoffs our 4th line was the most consistent for the entire playoffs.

They did their job

The 3rd line was garbage

The 2nd line and 1st line did little against Florida

The biggest surprise and possibly the biggest fluke was our blue line was scoring and getting points. I agree, but a team needs depth. The stars need to score, but the supporting cast needs to chip in.

I had a thought...

Knies is our Roberts. Matthews is our Sundin.

Bennett and Marchand would be our Corson and Tucker.

With Friedman mentioning that Marchand is looking for 24 million and Kyper saying the Leafs are one of few willing to go 4 years, 4 X 6 makes a ton of sense.

Honestly not that bad of a contract. Frontload it and just LTIR the last year.
He's 37 so right where even the best players hit the cliff and what if he doesn't LTIR? Way too old for a 4 year deal IMO.

The team needs more goals coming from deep across the lineup - this was true when Marner was here, and even more so with him leaving and the opportunity to make the teams cap structure less top heavy.

If the team goes into next season with largely the same supporting cast, the results will be the same. Bodies need to go out, even if we like some of those guys, there's always better options out there

The coolest part about this offseason and where we're at as a franchise, is noone really knows whats about to happen and there's so many possibilities.

Maybe Mitch leaves and JT comes back.
Maybe Mitch leaves and JT also leaves.
Maybe Mitch leaves, JT leaves and we move Rielly.
Maybe Mitch shocks everyone and comes back and we trade Nylander.
Maybe we trade Cowan for a young Center.
Maybe Knies asks for way too much and we deal him.

Not saying we should make some of those moves and some of those are more realistic than others but honestly, none of us really have any clue what this thing will look once next season starts.

Will be a very interesting next two months or so.

Friedman mentioning leafs could be looking at a defenseman for forward trade.

Morgan Rielly(5 years at 7.5 cap hit)for Nazem Kadri(4 years left at 7 cap hit)

I think there’s a chance Rielly uses his NTC but if he doesn’t it frees up a dman spot and gets us center depth. We can still and go sign Ekblad or another defenseman like Burns/Provorov/Orolov. Still have cap space to sign another center and add forward depth.

Would Leafs fans consider:

To TO:
Colton
Girard
Wood

To Col:
Benoit
Laughton
2027 2nd
With a 2nd round pick involved, I think I’d want Drury over Wood. Colorado would still free up almost 4.5 million.

To Toronto: Ross Colton + Samuel Girard + Jack Drury

To Colorado: Scott Laughton + Simon Benoit + 2027 2nd Rounder

They need to replace his ~25 goals. That's not particularly hard.

How many goals did he create for his linemates? I'm not sure exactly, but we'll have to replace that too.

We also need to replace his PKing, which is easy.

100%.

I think it's just as important to bring in the right types of players as it is to bring in talented players. You don't have to score goals, but you do have to do something to contribute to a win. We had too many guys who did nothing.

Take out Girard, Wood and the 2nd. No need for Girard with the current makeup of the Leafs roster unless 2 LHD go out the door. I don't think anyones touching Wood.
It would allow us to move Rielly in a separate deal. Girard basically just replaces Rielly in the lineup. Rielly for Kadri?

Looking at possible 3RW options alongside Tavares. If VGK move out Hague (as rumored) and sign Marner (as rumored) and Pietrangelo goes on LTIR (as rumored) they won't need to shed a ton of cap space.

I wonder if Laughton+Benoit for Roy works for both. Leafs get a good 3RW option that has term. He can also play C and would be the only RS C in the system. VGK get Laughton who can play 3LW for them and Benoit who basically steps in and fills the void that Hague leaves at 1/3 the cost.

VGK save 150k but they turn 1 roster player into 2.
