Roster Building/Team Building/Future Trade/Drafting thread.

If this team once again fails to proceed very far in the playoffs, what would you want them to do?

So, based on Marchment going for a 3rd+4th

What's Pageau's price now?

They need to clear space (not as badly as Dallas, mind you) for Dobson, plus possibly wanting to make a splash in the FA market.

3rd '25 + '27 2nd?

Or maybe something bigger.

Pageau + Romanov for Jarnkrok + Danford + Robertson or 3rd round '25

This would open the idea to move McCabe for other assets, which I don't think is likely, but I think it's worth exploring.

Pageau is a pure dump, he needs assets attached to take his contract

How much money can some of these impact players make in endorsements in Toronto?

I ask this because Kyper talked about Marchand and said he's been pretty clear he feels like he's sacrificed money in Boston and now wants to get paid.

There should obviously be a limit capwise you should go to but can the fact we can offer alot in off ice $$$ be a big factor?

Hence Romanov then

But, if that's the case, then fine. I wouldn't need much of an incentive to take him
except you have us giving up Jarnkrok + Danford + Robertson or 3rd round '25
Pageau's career high is 43 points 10+ years ago and he is basically Janrkrok at double the price
I wouldnt take Pageau and Romanov for Kampf and Reeves

It's safe to say it's the most challenging for the team in almost a decade.

Tres job is close to being on the line. If he flops and the team regresses significantly, he won't have much rope left.

Isn't it understood Tavares re-signing can be done? And done at a discount?

So, isn't the marner departure the largest hurdle?
marner is a RW, who gets assists and PK's.
I know some will disagree, but IMO, marner would not be getting 75 assists playing with non-Rocket winner. He'd still be getting assists, and doing PK duty, but maybe it's 50 assists?

Kane had 38 assists on the Wings, and maybe gets 55 with Matthews?
Maybe Boeser looks at Matthews, and thinks playing with him wouldn't hurt his career? And knows the budget Leafs have for that position.

Other than the 2 above, who has to be replaced?

Apparently Knies and the leafs are far apart with the contract... unfortunately every single player is going to keep doing this to us until we completely reset and get rid of all the core players. The team needs a complete overhaul from ownership to management to players.
Bridge him if he’s being that greedy, I love Knies’s game, but the sanity must stop going forward…….

Another excuse for players that aren't the core4. Everyone needs to step up in the playoffs -- McMann 20g in regular season, Laughton 15g, Lortenz 8g, Holmberg 7g, I'd expect through 2 rounds, just one of them can score a goal.

FLA plays a simple game, puck in deep, forecheck, limit teams time and space, rinse and repeat. FLA 3rd line was the difference maker in most series.
You don’t get it, if you don’t overpay for 34, 16, 88, 91, 44 you can afford better players ghan McMann, Laughton, Lorentz, and Holmberg………

Resigning Matthews isn't really something impressive. He couldn't even get him to sign for 8 years.

Being in on players and losing is like taking pride in taking the cup champs to 7games and losing. It's cool but if you don't get it done, it means nothing.

The offseason just started but the busy time is now and the next 2 weeks. He has to get busy and get top priorities done. So far more of the same.... Nothing
Not being able to sign 34 to max term might be a stroke of luck, Bubbles ineptitude for the win Alex…….

Not sure why we were trying to get Toews. He was done 3 years ago. Feel good story but there's nothing in him left

I am also very ok not going after Marchment. Slow and lethargic. Doesn't use his size enough. Glorified Bobby McMann
I think Toews is goingbto surprise with hus play……..

How hilarious would it be for JT to say how he wants to play for the Leafs all the way up to July 1st and then sign somewhere else? Exactly what he did with the Islanders.
Like like JT, but keeping him doesn’t change the DNA, and if he wants big money I hope Bubbles say FU…….

But apart from Teows it’s just teams re-signing their own players and Marchment being moved.

I think the changes need to go beyond just replacing Marner. At present the team's depth isn't good enough to win with the current top heavy structure and now that one of those stars is leaving and the other is coming back as a depth piece himself, the depth needs to be completely rebuilt.

The need a top six centre to replace JT, a top six winger to replace Marner, and more depth scoring among the forwards (which includes probably a legit 3C to push JT to the third line wing at even strength);and probably another guy who can move the puck among the D.

It's possible, but no easy task

Crazy seeing guys like Bennett and Marchand coming out wanting new contracts with Florida and probably making it work. What an underrated dynasty that organization has built.
So good makes one consider changing allegiance………

It might be safe to say in this scenario when we get to 2026 free agency, and assuming there are at least a couple marquee FA's available, Tree won't be the GM to try to sign one.

Big money today is >$8mm.

It really is term that's the concern ... and Treliving will give 6 year deals for 3-4 year players.

So for capologists ...

Structure a most money in pocket over first 3 years in a 6 year contract...

Front-Loaded Contract Variability

-The difference between compensation in any year and the year immediately before or after cannot exceed 25% of compensation in Year 1 of the contract

-Compensation in any year cannot be less than 60% of the highest compensation year

I think it’s going to be a tough offseason for us.

Treliving is not the guy for this either. There’s no creativity with him and he’s not going to ruffle any feathers by forcing guys to waive their NMCs or throwing out offer sheets or playing hardball with the free agents.

Other teams find a way to get guys to move off their NMCs and other Canadian teams can easily lock up their talent to fair long term deals but here it’s apparently impossible.

I’m keeping my expectations low for the off-season…
