Roster Building/Team Building/Future Trade/Drafting thread.

If this team once again fails to proceed very far in the playoffs, what would you want them to do?

Not for nothing, but felt like Bert was used wrong in Toronto, under Keefe. They had him playing a skill game and trying to make plays with Marner & Matthews. He didn't have the hands for that.

Under Chief I'd feel like he would be more successful. More simple hockey, instead of the puck possession Keefe ran.
I agree. I’d take him back for sub $3M if he comes here in a bottom 6 role.

Maybe Chicago retains half and we can send them back Kampf+Robertson maybe.

Bert > Marchment
Bert @3m >>> Marchment @4.5M

Little surprised we haven’t heard anything about Lorentz resigning. Another local boy. Should be an easy sign but haven’t heard a word.

Also are they changing the dna with guys like jarnkrok, kampf, holmberg etc

I think they are trying to get Knies done first so they aren’t open to an offer sheet.
Then work on whether they keep any of their UFA’s.

Step one: Trade guys we know don't work in the bottom 6 for picks/prospects.

Haula costs $3.15m, had only 21 points, is coming off an injury riddled season, is 34 , doesn't really hit, doesnt PK much. He got a 4th and recent 6th round pick prospect. Move guys like Jarnkrok and Kampf in trades where you add a mid round pick or two (4-5th, lesser prospects),

Replacing both of them will (should) cost less than $4.5m.

Step 2: Take a buy low chance on a few guys rebounding from down years / getting there game back a bit or just who bring a different feel.

1) Tanner Jeannout
2) Joel Armia
3) Brandon Tanev
4) Nathan Bastian
5) Christian Dvorak
H.M. Anthony Mantha (AHL/NHL depth) who could be great or literally nothing.

Look at guys other teams are moving on from who are still young enough to turn it around and / or might just need a new team. They will cost next to nothing, and can always be good AHL depth.
Grigori Denisenko, Julien Gauthier. This list grows quickly when we see what RFA's aren't qualified.

People bemoan Flordia, but they added one of their better D on waivers, and picked up a few others for nothing. We can't make a big leap by signing a $3m dollar player to a $3m contract. You need to take a few swings on guys who have an upside that could be useful.
Leafs problems aren’t with the “bottom six” whoever that ends up being, it’s with the core, always has been, always will be until they are moved elsewhere. This is so ridiculous, imagine your going broke and you blame it on the phone bill and not the mortgage that’s bleeding you dry. Sheer madness……….

All I know is that Treviling cornered himself into an awful position. So many players gone or resigned with their respective clubs, but obviously nothing Leafs related. He better wake up soon
Bubbles is running it back minus Marner, book it………

You know it's possible for it to be both right ?

Father told me this is the offseason that will cement Treliving's legacy. He said strong steps were taken this past season and he will take us over the finish line this year!!

Zito says he can sign all 3 but I agree with you. I think Ekblad will be the odd man out and he got Jones with that foresight in mind.

I think both Ekblad and Marchand price themselves out

They seemingly positioned themselves to ease Ekblad's departure with the Jones trade earlier too. And Marchand is looking after his retirement first and foremost and it's hard to see Florida being able to meet the ask despite what their GM might say publicly (at least unless he's willing to hurt the teams depth even further,.which seems unlikely).

Tre will probably jump on both guys if given the chance

Leafs should be aggressively trying to acquire him. An actual puck moving offensive dmen who is big and a RD at that needs to be brought in.

Agreed. The panthers continuously find value with efficient contracts. We need to do the same. That’s where pro scouting is vital.
