Roster Building/Team Building/Future Trade/Drafting thread.

If this team once again fails to proceed very far in the playoffs, what would you want them to do?

Not sure I follow. Why would the agent feel slighted?
He shouldn’t, but from an outside perspective, because of the previous Marner negotiations, Kadri trade, Rodrigues, Bogosian etc. it looks like he’s making it personal and about himself, when it should be about the players he represents and what they want.

I believe they will still be a playoff team but that isn’t the entire issue.
The questions have been does this core have what it takes to be a playoff core.
It’s unfair to put it all on Marner (and believe me I’m no fan) but the issue is the DNA of the entire core.
We will see what the changes are, but it doesn’t change the fact that I don’t believe in Matthews/Nylander/Tavares/Rielly minus Marner anymore than with him.
im just guessing here but maybe Marner is the problem. maybe he feels he is entitled because hes from toronto. maybe hes upset that Matthews is the captain and not him. a lot of maybes but sometimes all it takes is to move one person and everything falls back in line.

This probably forces Ottawa to move one of Perron or Amadio (assuming Giroux stays). I'd have interest in Amadio if the price is nothing. Youngish RS RW, relatively fast skater, really strong defensive numbers, was a good contributor during Vegas' cup run. He'd be a good 3rd cog on a Tavares line or a very good 4RW.

Taking things personal doesn't seem like a trait an Agent would carry.

Another Center off the UFA list.

that is the Tavares template but got to factor in on tax state so it would be $5 million. If JT got the same contract in Toronto the difference in taxes would be 2.9 million.

2.9 divided by 4 would be roughly 750K. Add that to 4.5 and I would round down to 5 million a year. This just shows you now much you need to overpay in no tax states. 750K is a depth player on the 4th line like all of FLA 4th liners.

Or you could just not factor in state taxes. Both players play in the NHL under the same salary cap. Offer Tavares this contract and say take it or leave it. If he comes back and says I want a state tax bump let him walk.

Duchene contract is great news for a Tavares extension. Give Tavares a 5 yr term at 4.5 million. Gives him the extra money on an extra year to lower cap hit for Leafs.

Will be interesting to see if agents try to price gouge leafs after they walk away from Marner. Knowing they'll be pressure on them to replace him and make a statement

Anyway forwards I like

Granlund really impressed me at four nations
Always like Ehlers, he's got speed , plays with some grit, has skill but more of a middle six
Think Benn would be a great get...depending on price and doubt he leaves Dallas
Mangiapane nice mix of skill and physicality
Always liked Ellers
Flyer on Brazeau would be interesting, big boy
Bjugstad would be a nice addition depending on price
Kapanen had moments during the playoffs and he's tight with Nylander
Jeannot on a min would be an interesting get , motivated he could have an impact
Nosek good depth C with size

Yes,

Or just make the decision irrespective of money to move on and actually make a change in the culture, or DNA, or whatever phrase you like?

Granlund really impressed me at four nations -YES
Always like Ehlers, he's got speed , plays with some grit, has skill but more of a middle six -NO
Think Benn would be a great get...depending on price and doubt he leaves Dallas - NOT LEAVING
Mangiapane nice mix of skill and physicality - YES AT RIGHT PRICE
Always liked Ellers - NO

Cap space is gold. I hope they don’t feel the pressure to act just because. Use that cap space strategically to gather assets (picks, prospects)

There will be the next wave or reclamation projects like Florida has done

Thats definitely a "i wanna stay in Dallas" aav. Even if he's a disappointment thats AAV is worth it

Id expect something similar for Tavares

That's the contract I offer JT, JT has way more career earnings.

4.5M x 4

Or 3.5M x 6 (with deferrals)

If he doesn't want to sign it, I am perfectly happy parting way, this organization needs to shed the reputation of one that folds in negotiations.

After signing Duchene, Dallas only has 455k in cap space with 18 players signed. Have to assume they're going to be moving out some bodies

I'm all for nuking the fraud 4, but at that price JT is definitely out producing the cap hit and I dont see anyone better coming in at even a comparable price let alone cheaper
At this point, different is almost better.

And for the type of player that Nylander needs in a defensive sense, I don't think Tavares is that guy anymore. As for the offence, I've pretty much got Marchand covering that, which also covers the DNA/identity change as well.

I think the only 2 options on the list would be Granlund & Mangiapane.

A lot of the comments from reporters and year end press conferences was that the DNA had to change and that you can't have similar style players. Ehlers seems like the perimeter player that the Leafs have/had. I agree with you that Benn stays.

Seemingly it might be a trade route for other centre options. Chandler Stephenson, Dawson Mercer, JG Pageau, Alex Wennberg or Ross Colton.
