Roster Building/Team Building/Future Trade/Drafting thread.

If this team once again fails to proceed very far in the playoffs, what would you want them to do?

Ferris is definitely trying to steer his clients away from Toronto.

Also, Kane was awful in these playoffs. But if we did take a chance on him I wouldn’t mind because he’s only on a 1 year deal and would add toughness to our team.
Why would he do that?

He's a popular guy around the league.
Players will take notice of how things ended here, not only with him but with how the team was treated in general.
More likely people will take notice of how his agent and camp behaved during current negotiations or lack thereof. Marner was treated very well here and was handed a very nice contract including NMC kicking in his final contract year. Social media is tough for many celebrities and even godlike creatures where ever they reside. Getting car jacked in the U.S. is more more likely to lead to violence than in Toronto.

Because they are pissed off for whatever reason. Maybe they were insulted that they were asked to waive their no move clause multiple times
That's a good thing then. We don't want weak willed players and agents ... If this filters out a group of players afraid of big bad Toronto, so be it. We will take the players that wanna come here and thrive in this environment. Win/win

The good news is that in sports people have short memories

Winning changes everything

If they were to win then players would flock to the team

Far bigger markets like the Yankees, Dodgers and Red Sox have no issues attracting big names. They have a history of winning (some more recent than others)

With all this talk about playing Zibanejad and Nylander together, what if it really meant Nylander potentially going to the big apple? There’s a few destinations such as LA and New York (Rangers) I can see Nylander willing to accept a trade to.

To Toronto: Vincent Trocheck + Alexis Lafreniere
To Rangers: William Nylander + Simon Benoit

Who says no?

Why would he do that?
Good question. I think he just must hate Toronto.

Players with him as their agent in the NHL that have played for the leafs include:

Marner - leaving
Kadri - traded from us
Rodrigues - traded? Waived? Can’t remember
Edmunson - left
Bogosian - signed one year and then left

I remember when Bogosian came here he played well but was missing his family (Covid)

The only one here that probably left here happy was Edmunson.

Players don't care what Agents do, that's why they hire them.
The team treated the player well, it's all the other stuff that went/goes on.
Players see jerseys, thrown on the ice or set on fire, players boo'd off the ice, etc and they think why bother with that when there are so many other markets to choose from.

As an Agent I would think all he would care about is getting the best deal for his client regardless of the location.

Forgot Rodrigues was here, should have kept him.

Agreed.

It appears he feels slighted, and is trying to use whatever influence he has to steer his clients away from us based on his past experiences with his clients even if we’re offering more money.

In this very specific instance? Not at all.

McDavid or Matthews, who is your 1st line centre?

You legitimately have brain damage if your answer is anyone but McDavid in this case.
If by some miracle McJesus cane here Captain Arrogant wojld have to be moved elsewhere, LA would be a good place for him to land……

I’m not trying to defend these guys at all but even playing in a rec league you want to win let alone being a professional athlete. Some of these narratives of they don’t care is nonsense.
I cant believe I'm seriously quoting a satire/comedy show to address this but Shoresy said it best. "These guys love to win, everyone loves to win. But do they hate to lose? You have to hate to lose."

And no, these guys definitely dont hate to lose in the playoffs

Our demise is being greatly exaggerated.
We still have Matthews, Nylander, Knies, our entire defence coming back if we like, both our goalies and tons of capspace.
That should easily still be a playoff team.
I believe they will still be a playoff team but that isn’t the entire issue.
The questions have been does this core have what it takes to be a playoff core.
It’s unfair to put it all on Marner (and believe me I’m no fan) but the issue is the DNA of the entire core.
We will see what the changes are, but it doesn’t change the fact that I don’t believe in Matthews/Nylander/Tavares/Rielly minus Marner anymore than with him.

I have those same concerns about the core.
If Marner does bolt, there's a strong likelihood that our team construction will look different in that we'll most likely be a more balanced offensive team compared to more top heavy. Who knows if this will work but theres definitely people who like this design better, Marchand even had a quote something like, I'd rather have 5-6 players than 3, it makes you a harder team to play against.

You look around at players who can slot into your top six that won’t cost much to acquire and most have term on their contracts, Zibanejad, Bertuzzi, etc. Kane at least only has 1 year remaining, so if it doesn’t work out at least his salary comes off the books where the UFA pool will hopefully be a little better next off-season. It would also allow us to spend our very minimal assets on a second line center and fill another need.

Not saying Kane is ideal, but given our position, needs, lack of assets, cost to acquire, etc it might be something to explore.
I agree with this.

One year. That's it.

We're not in a position where we can get too picky. If there's 25 goal, 40+ point power forward available for peanuts for one year....take it! If he starts taking dumb penalties in the playoffs, get rid of him the year after.

Save your long-term money for the free agents of 2026.

What do people think it would cost to acquire Zacha?
Not cheap, unfortunately.

He would be a great fit though.

Signed for a measly 4.7 cap hit for 2 more years. Fits our timeline. That cap hit is looking amazing given what's been handed out lately.

He's a good skater, greasy, board battler, and can provide offense (59 points 2 years ago) and defense. A good 2C for Nylander.

I've always had a soft spot for this guy. It started when I heard that he learned English by watching "Dumb and Dumber" over and over again. LOL

Danford and a 2nd? Hopefully, not Cowan.
