Roster Building/Team Building/Future Trade/Drafting thread.

If this team once again fails to proceed very far in the playoffs, what would you want them to do?

If we went into the season with Floridas 4th line people would still complain about their offensive numbers. They each only have 3 points the entire playoffs which isn't really that much better than ours and ours is a problem.
Yes... but we are paying triple for ours, while Floridas is used to build a better top 9.

What a trade made by Zito to acquire Seth Jones.

For awhile there was tons of debate if this guy was actually any good or not.

I know theres lots of talk about the tax advantage but this GM derserves some real credit for finding some of these players or buying when their value was low.

Our front office needs to up their game if we're going to dethrone them.

This team really needs more depth in scoring. To have a third and fourth line that can put the puck in the net every now and then would really put this team over the top. The problem is, not all people that can score goals will want those minutes. The need to find more TEAM instead of ME type players is what should be a priority. I would be willing to give Nick Robertson a pay increase if he would play those type of minutes on a full time basis (but that is not up to me).

The Leafs are suddenly lacking in star power. Who is the last team to win a cup where Nylander would have been their 2nd best player?

The Leafs have quickly turned a corner from being top heavy to having to rely on depth to win. They need 3 scoring lines now more than ever.

It feels like E. Kane's value is really low right now. I doubt the Oilers keep him.

Given that the Oilers are gonna need cheap players, as they're going to face the cap crunch in a big way, would McMann get us Kane? That's a low cost guy for them who's fast enough to even play beside McDavid.

Or maybe even Robertson? Super cheap and provides some scoring.

Yeah, I know that Kane took a lot of dumb penalties, but, if you look at the big picture (these entire playoffs and last year's playoffs) he's usually better than this.

Also, a huge DNA changer (yes, douchey term) with a low price to obtain. We need to capitalize on good players that we can get for cheap!

I would only do this if Marchand is not coming.

I'm thinking he'll be available for free.

Oilers probably revisit going after Swayman if/when McDavid gives them a commitment.

So they would need to get rid of players like Kane for cap purposes. Maybe even see if someone will take Nurse

Sorry, too lazy to do the numbers, but I'm almost 100% sure both these scenarios fit with our cap (when Marner, Kampf and co. leave).

Option 1:

Knies Matthews Domi
E.Kane Zibby Nylander
McMann Tavares Dube
Tanev Laughton Lorentz
Homberg

-Easy guys to acquire through F.A. or trade (we don't lose Cowan or Danford)
-Dube only if not guilty
-First line is worse than last year - hard to avoid that
-Second line should be as good as last year. Maybe better. Toughness and speed. Zibby is not as bad defensively as people think.
-Third line has three 20(ish) goal scorers. Very offensive, but responsible players too. Better than last year.
-Fourth line is pretty talented, relatively-speaking. Should be better than last year.
-All new players are average to above average in speed
-Defense and goaltending is the same

So, a more well-rounded team with a weaker first line than before. Also, three tougher "DNA" players added to the mix (Kane, Dube, Tanev)

Option 2:

Knies Matthews Marchand
Dube Zacha Nylander
McMann Tavares Domi
Tanev Laughton Lorentz
Homberg

-First line is better in this scenario and second line is a little weaker. Who knows though....Zacha may compliment Nylander well with his puck-retrieving, net-crashing skills. Dube is also similar to Zacha.
-All new guys are fast/good skaters
-Gritty guys as well
-Marchand is massive DNA changer

I don't think any of the Team Canada guys are signing in Toronto. The Leafs historically doesn't take on that level of baggage.
Sure, but this is post-Dubas/Shanahan era. Maybe, McLeod, for example, needs to be close to home (Mississauga) for parental support and psychotherapy and stuff. He's going to need some therapy for both his behaviour and for going through this ordeal!

I think it's too early to say that a (presumed) acquittal leads to a return to the league. There's what can be proven in court, and there's what happened. They may or may not be the same thing.

There's still the issue of the Hockey Canada tribunal/report/appeal. Maybe the the initial tribunal exonerated the players and the appeal was launched by EM. But maybe the tribunal banned the players and the appeal was lead by them. In either case, that process (if released publicly) with its relaxed due process and lower evidentiary standard (texts and player statements that the defense fought very hard to get excluded) may paint the players in a very different light than the trial.

Either way- I would not be surprised if teams wait for that to shake out to see what kind of baggage the players come with.

Kane was invisible in the finals. Not the answer

Suter is not what Tre is looking for. Bigger and faster is where I see them going.

Hockey will keep transitioning in this direction
