Roster Building/Team Building/Future Trade/Drafting thread.

If this team once again fails to proceed very far in the playoffs, what would you want them to do?

I dont disagree with you for the most part. Ideally you want that perfect balance.

However I think its obvious one of the extremes is better than the other. And after watching 9 years of the fraud 4 fall into the former category, I'd happily take someone like Miller from the latter category.

Zibanejad since we're on the topic falls into the former as well.

No extreme is good.

Zbad is a pretty good playoffs guy... 24 points in 20 games a couple of years ago... he's been far better than Miller, who is a .6 PPG playoff guy, who has regularly underperformed.

Miller is the worst playoff performer of the "fraud" 4 and Zbad.

This is also coming from someone who wanted the Leafs to acquire Miller because I thought we could use his talent and it was potentially going to be a good deal for a trade.

If you get a couple mil retained on Zib it’s probably worth the risk, he’s not a play driver but he at least gives us a 4th guy with a non-muffin shot. You can’t skate the puck into the net.

Before Treliving traded for Laughton you and I were both in agreement that Laughton's 1 5th place Selke vote was a joke and he was not a good defensive C. Did his time in Toronto change your opinion?

We are also both in agreement that Zibanejad's defensive game fell off a cliff last season. He had 1 5th place Selke vote in 23-24 which truly means nothing. He finished 15th in voting 3 years ago, 16th 2 years ago.

Matthews can absolutely anchor a shutdown line but is that the best use of his talent?
irrelevant, Matthews by being the #1C will always be lined up vs the other teams best line, save the odd home game faceoffs.
he is a shutdown C by default.
Barkov is Florida's shutdown C too.

One thing is guaranteed

There will be a lot of over reactions and hot takes when Tre signs some guys or makes trades

All you have to do is scroll the OEL thread among others to see people that are quick to be negative without giving things a chance

Many of Tre’s acquisitions have worked out well so far

no one's a free agent until July first.........

I am not sure what point you are trying to make. Matthews, Nylander, and Rielly have a contract for next season hense their count against the cap. Marner and Tavares do not have a contract for next season from the Leafs so they do not count against the cap next season. Should they get extended then, yes, they will also but I think it is a forgone conclusion that Marner is gone. I am worried about Tavares coming back but hopefully Brad plays hard ball with him.

Very true, as far as free agent

Bertuzzi - W
Domi - W
Benoit - Massive W (for the price)
OEL/Tanev - W Tanev is the best player back there lol
Stolarz - massive W
Reaves - Ehhh perhaps an L
Lorentz - W

The Laughton trade I don't like. Don't like kampf signing. Those weren't new UFA signings though
