Such a model franchise... let's be frank, Chris Drury took a pretty good cast, and has completely screwed it up.

I'll just go with... our judgement of players isn't the same.

Yes and no, Danault would be your matchup centerman. Not sure if having Nylander with him really makes sense given the defensive zone starts would definitely outweigh the offensive zone starts and he’s not very strong defensively. With Danault (who I don’t think is available), you’re probably playing him on a line with Laughton and signing Brown in free agency for a shutdown line. Laughton - Danault - Brown makes more sense IMO.

It's an interesting and good point, but in my idea of the team next year, I still have Kampf as the #4 C there as well.

I know it's not a popular decision, but he excels at taking DZS and PK, and I don't see a specialist in that area emerging or in the market who can.

However, it would hypothetically help both Matthews and Danault in that regard, especially with Matthews taking too many DZS, because with Marner gone, I think we will have to optimize Matthews' offence as much as possible.


But for me, Danault is there for 5v5 security in the playoffs with Nylander, and given that, at least in the version in my head, there's a 37-year-old Marchand on the other side, having a really defensively conscious C for them would be best IMHO.

Trouba made the Ducks better, and he anchored their team pretty well. Ducks record was better after he joined.
Kaako was much better after he left.
Goodrow was no better, not really any worse... just not a great player anymore.
Chytil has never been that good... whatever kind of player.

Look, the team broke down last year, and something internal was off.

Rangers actually put up more points per game, before the JT Miller trade, than after.

Yeah, we’re in a pretty shitty position. If you acquire Danault as your 2C, I don’t think you’re maximizing his strengths and same goes with Nylander if the two are paired together. Not to say a line of Marchand - Danault - Nylander wouldn’t be good though. But if you put Danault in a pure shutdown role like my previous comment (Laughton - Danault - Brown), then that means we need JT as our second line center again playing with Nylander. It’s not ideal but I would focus on a very strong 4th line that can play in some matchup situations, we have Laughton at a discounted price and lots of cap space to work with. My ideal 4th line would be Tanev - Laughton - Raddysh. Brings a little bit of everything and can play in any situation IMO.

I'm someone that really likes Trouba, but I cant look at those moves (even Kakko) and think any of them made the Rangers a worse team. There's much better uses for cap space. The Rangers will probably f*** it up with who they acquire, but I dont hate the subtractions.

If you think Zibanejad isn't a productive player, I'm not sure what to say... 33 points in his last 31 games, and they have about the same number of points over the last SEVEN seasons.

Zbad won't be traded for his full value, pennies on his dollar.

On the other hand, Miller has been a locker room issue everywhere he's played at some point.

Why, because he's intense and wants to win/hates losing? He's exactly what the Leafs need more of.

In some ways sure... we could use his intensity... but he's a me first person, and that's the last thing we need another one of. If he had the intensity, and was a positive leader type, sure... but that's not JT Miller... he's a guy who creates problems almost everywhere he goes.

You mean outside of 34, 88, 16, 44, and 92, because until July 1st their all Leafs, and let’s not forget Bubbles could still run it back…..

I didnt include Tavares and Marner because as of this moment they are free agents and do not count against the cap. Without Shannahan there I think Brad will change things up. He has been here long enough to know the current core doesnt work.

Domi on top line long term makes me nervous. In short stretches he looks ok but he takes dumb penalties and will get exposed against other teams top lines long term imo.

I think it is a waste to extend Tavares and put him on the 3rd line. Laughton and Brown wont be able to put up enough offense to make it worth it for him. Maybe be better to put him with Matthews and have a gritty 3rd line. The problem looking at this is we are back to no offense in the bottom 6 which is and issue. They may be more gritty but at the end of the day replacing McMann with Marchand, Marner with Tavares, and Tavares with Karlsson probably isnt enough.

Many assume he is re-signing in Detroit as he made that public a few months ago but I wonder why it's not done yet unless he is contemplating retirement. Would be a great situation for him being close to home on a team that is close. Also makes you wonder with Toews in the mix that perhaps there could be a reunion of sorts. Would be a great short term Marner replacement with dollars to add on the rest of the roster.

Toronto is close to Buffalo, another Original Six team and Kane was living the area while rehabbing. It’s kind of a natural fit.

Well, the JT thing that I'm trying to avoid, because I don't think based on the Florida series, mainly, that he can't be Nylander's minder defensively in a series like that anymore, and I really do think a change is necessary for most of that core 4/5.

So, as you said, it's kind of a shitty position, because you're trying to serve both issues of change, but not having too much drop-off.

That's not to say I don't like Nylander, to be clear. He can do things that no one on this team can do, Matthews included, but as Matthews needs a playmaking/puck carrier, Nylander needs a particular kind of center, especially for the playoffs.

You're possibly right, in terms of utilization for the regular season. However, there's flexibility; I'm not sure who the third-line center is in this setup, but Nylander could alternate between him and Danault based on the opposition.
