Roster Building/Team Building/Future Trade/Drafting thread.

If this team once again fails to proceed very far in the playoffs, what would you want them to do?

Nope. Theres a shortage of 2nd line centers on the market and probably a dozen #4 LD types.

I like McCabe, but he doesnt hold any value in a discussion for a player who isnt for sale (Danault). Kopitar is ancient, LA still doesnt know if Byfield is a C or W, and after Danault theres nothing on the roster (or in the system) in terms of centermen.

Obviously Danault could be had for an overpayment, but I dont see anyone on Toronto besides Knies or Nylander that fits the bill there, and both of those are obviously no go's for Toronto.
Is there a chance Holland just makes a bad trade?

Because that would be nice...

Mo is the worst and should move based on merit but yeah I think we will be dancing around the problem and have to move one of OEL, Carlo and less likely McCabe or Benoit.
be a real shame to lose anyone instead of Mo, who's the real problem on the back end...........

Looking at much lower end C's than Karlsson/Zib: I wonder if McCabe for McBain would work for Utah. I previously have looked at their D depth and figured they won't be in the market for a defenseman but McCabe would be a huge upgrade on either Maatta or Cole alongside Durzi.

Follow that up with McMann for Walman and run:

Knies-Matthews-X
Marchand-McBain-Nylander
X-Tavares-X
X-Laughton-X

Walman-Tanev
Rielly-Carlo
OEL-X

Treliving just extended McCabe not too long ago at a great price point, no chance he’s trading McCabe IMO.

I think Zibenajad is a good target, especially as the cost will likely be low. Right handed center, which he desperately need more of, and a perfect fit on paper for Nylander.

Although 32, he looks like a 30 goal 80 Point player and he put up 24 points in 20 games during their eastern conference final run two years ago.

I would be very interested, although I might want retention.
I want to know what the player can do if they don’t exactly put up just the amount of points you listed.
Can they forecheck, win 1 on 1, adopt the pack mentality, push back and play a solid 2way game?
We need something more in addition to, hey he’s an 80 point guy so this has to work.

I didn't realize he was untouchable. I thought he wanted more puck movers on the back end.

He does but he literally just extended him, he could have hit UFA on July 1st but re-signed here and if we traded him before the contract extension kicked in, it would be be bad optically.

I mean, Treliving is also equally capable of doing one as well (see deadline moves).

But Danault is a near-perfect fit for what this team needs in a C, especially for Nylander.
Yes and no, Danault would be your matchup centerman. Not sure if having Nylander with him really makes sense given the defensive zone starts would definitely outweigh the offensive zone starts and he’s not very strong defensively. With Danault (who I don’t think is available), you’re probably playing him on a line with Laughton and signing Brown in free agency for a shutdown line. Laughton - Danault - Brown makes more sense IMO.

Completely agree about the optics but it would be nice to see the Leafs transition from a player first management style to a winning first management style.

McBain is exactly the type of "lower end" center I'd like to try on a Knies-Nylander line. He's also someone that could qualify as a cheap banger for Matthews' wing

Yea that he is. Danault is the type you win with.

If LA were to land a Duchene/Tavares UFA or equivalent via trade, I could maybe see a deal around Danault for Cowan+. But even then I'd rather see LA just keep Danault

This team and management staff talk about McCabe as a warrior and someone who will do whatever it takes to win. I think that’s the type of DNA Treliving and Berube want throughout their lineup. Unless the deal blows your mind, don’t see Treliving trading McCabe. There’s probably a better chance Rielly waives his clause.

I would love to see Rielly moved instead but I'm not holding my breath.

Is one of Sam Bennett or Brad Marchand going to be a Leaf next season? — Emele V.

The one who almost certainly won’t be is Bennett, who is either going back to Florida or hitting a massive UFA home run with a team that has acres of cap space, such as Utah.

That’s just his personal choice, from what I’ve been hearing.

Marchand, however, is going to enter free agency with a ton of suitors, and you’d really be guessing trying to forecast where he lands. I do think he’ll be interested in the challenge/opportunity of coming to Toronto and trying to help them finally have more playoff success. But it’s going to cost the Leafs (or whoever ends up signing him).

A 37-year-old who had 51 points during the regular season getting term (at least three years) and big dollars ($8 million plus a season) would be unheard of any other year, but you have this confluence of factors — a lot of teams with cap space, a ton of teams needing scoring, his unique skill set and a huge postseason performance — that will get Marchand there.

If the Leafs are willing to meet that asking price, I really think they’ll have a decent shot. There just aren’t going to be many contenders willing to spend that much. And, frankly, it’s not like they’re going to have a ton of other high-end options, so he might represent their best shot to change this team’s DNA when the games matter the most.

Have you heard of any buzz around the idea of moving Morgan Rielly this summer? He isn’t moving like he used to, and it seems possible that both he and Vancouver would be open to him going home. — Mike C.

I have heard the talk in the fan base and media. But I don’t think he has any interest in leaving.

What I have also heard is that Toronto would like its blue line to be able to break the puck out better and help defenders maintain possession more, something that was an issue against Florida.
In an ideal world, that would mean bringing in another puckmover, not moving out the only one they have (or two if you include Oliver Ekman-Larsson), but it’s hard to see them being able to address the composition of their defence with all of their needs up front and the limited options in free agency.

For now, they need Rielly to be part of that solution. He knows he needs to be better.
