Roster Building/Team Building/Future Trade/Drafting thread.

If this team once again fails to proceed very far in the playoffs, what would you want them to do?

I think I would prefer W. Karlsson to ride beside Nylander over Zibanejad.
Would be such a better fit with minimal long-term risk. The issue is the acquisition cost could climb as high as a 1st given the amount of teams that would be bidding on him. There was also a rumor percolating last week that he had Toronto on his no-trade list last summer when a Marner to VGK deal was being discussed.

Is there a source for this?

Can't have an entire roster of grinders that can't score either.

I'm all for Marchand, Bennett and Perry or any other gritty kinda player you can think of but we had a hard time gaining the zone and scoring goals in the playoffs.

You need talent, grit and speed.
Going forward Knies is the prototypical winger I want throughout the lineup, of course a wee bit less offensive as you go down the line up, but his size, speed, determination is what I want none the less……….

I do wonder how big a Zibanejad trade can go. NYR will suddenly have a pretty empty forward group and a ton of cap space. Could it look something like Schneider+Zib for Domi+McCabe? Schneider+Zib for Domi+Rielly would be ideal if Rielly was interested in NYC.

It continues to be reported the Rangers with Offersheets, but they'd need to recover some picks? Does that mean they'll move valuable pieces at a discount?

Would something like this work?
Karlsson and Rangers' 1st.
for
Zibanejad and K.Miller
?
Something to Utah for their 2nd.?

Offersheet targets?

Only players classified as restricted free agents (RFAs) can sign offer sheets. This excludes “10.2(c)” players, which are players who have completed their Entry-Level Contracts (ELCs) without meeting the professional-experience requirements tied to their signing age.
So, for example, New Jersey Devils defenceman Luke Hughes is not eligible for an offer sheet, even though he's a restricted free agent.

Other RFA's

Yeah all the posts I saw about it, seemed like it was spitballing but not anything definite.

Nick Alberga said it on Leafs Morning Take last week. Not a great source but he has enough info.

I wouldn't rule out Karlsson as an option, I feel like a call from Nylander basically saying "Wanna be my centre?" - would be appealing, heck, if they look good together, it could put Karlsson on a line with 88 at the Olympics.

They played on a line together at the world championships and combined for 1 goal/1 assist in 3 games. Not a big enough sample to say it won't work but it was definitely not a positive sample.

I'm not sure if that's a positive. I have 0 recollection of how they looked together at 4 nations but I'm just looking at stats and they combined for 3 points.

Three games... not really the thing to stats watch over.... It's more of a... have a conversation with Nylander about how they played together... review the tapes... sometimes you get lucky and score, sometimes you don't.. how did they play, how was their possession.. defensive play together.. It's an opportunity to bring more info to the table.

Be serious... there is so much more depth to look at this, than try to come to a conclusion about stats watching... Not a positive sample??

I wonder why there isn't more Patty Kane speculation? He's still a near-ppg player, plays well in the playoffs, born in Buffalo, was Matthews' idol growing up, and might be the closest available player to Mitch in terms of offensive style/ability. Won't be expensive and short term.
If/when losing Marner is official then they go to their list of solutions. If someone is really paying Boeser close to $8.5M that seems like a non starter. The Marchand love is crazy right now but he is the same age as Kane who played for $4M and produced the same the last 2 years. I would not even get in the bidding for Marchand if I could sign Kane early. I believe the cost difference based on the recency bias for his excellent playoff makes this a strong move. He won't be signing for 1 year again but neither will Marchand.

Yes, much too small of a sample size to draw any conclusion plus who knows what we get for the LW on that line?

Marchand-Karlsson-88 could be beastly.

I said it was a small sample. The poster said if they play in Toronto together they can play at the Olympics. I point out that they have played together internationally and they didn't put up offense. Nylander put up 37 point in 21 games at this tournament before putting up 1 goal, no assists while playing with Karlsson in 3 games this year.

I mean to be fair, Nylander probably isn't use to playing that many playoff games so he could've been tired this year!

Assuming we get a 2C like Zibs or WK. What would be the ideal wingers for Tavares as 3C? I really like the idea of bringing Brown back

Yeah, if the speculated 4 years at $8m for Marchand is true and you can get Patty for say 2 years at $5m, the latter seems like the better play.

Mind you, their combined salary will probably be the equivalent of Mitch alone, so hell, maybe get 'em both.

Yup. Zibanejad can f*** off. He wasnt good until Miller showed up and started carrying him.

He's a poor man's Matthews. Overpaid and brings a very inconsistent effort.

$8.5mm on his cap, which might be high for his age, but if a team is going to pay $8mm to 37 year old forwards, $8.5mm for a 32 year old it looks like market rate.

And to steal Kurtz idea, add Kane.

Since you're a Kings fan. Assuming Gavrikov walks, does McCabe for Danault work? I know they'd be looking for a 3C replacement but that would give them a ton of cap space to find one.
