If this team once again fails to proceed very far in the playoffs, what would you want them to do?

Wasn't he primarily playing wing with Miller though?

It's hard to say... he certainly had some play time with Miller, in looking at FrozenPool... but I look through the games, and I can't find many instances where they figure on each other's points.... He's played with Kreider a ton in his career, and Kreider was injured for a good portion of last year... also came good near the end of the year... they figure more in scoring.

It's one of those things, where we fans really lack the information we need... I think it's a pro scouting, going back over tapes and so on.... If we can get him at a reduced amount, or add in an asset like K'Andre Miller, who wants out, then it *** might *** be worth it. But this is something more than staring at some stats... it's a conversation with Zbad... it's probably a conversation with Nylander as well... Remember, Nylander and Zbad were linemates at Four Nations.

Mika Zibanejad seems like he's an ideal target for Montreal or Calgary. I don't see the leafs being interested honestly

Just a note in a post on it's own...

Zbad and Nylander were linemates at Four Nations.... The first person I'd ask, is Nylander about this idea.

Let's say a Zibanejad deal goes through and it's something like McCabe+Domi for Zibanejad.

Let's say the two UFA's that are heavily rumored to Toronto actually come - Marchand 7.5Mx2(3?), Tanev 2Mx(?).

Let's say Tavares+Knies combined for 11.5M.

All of a sudden you're looking at:

Knies-Matthews-X
Marchand-Zib-Nylander
McMann-Tavares-X
Tanev-Laughton-X

Rielly-Tanev
OEL-Carlo
Benoit-X

Stolarz
Woll

You have 11M to fill those 4 holes and run a 20 man roster. If you include Myers and Holmberg (2M total?) you have 9M to fill 1/3/4RW and 3RD. I'd be looking at Raddysh for 2M, Perbix for 2.5M, Eberle at 50% retained via trade. How you fill that last spot, I'm not sure. Maybe Kane on a bonus deal.

Giving up Danford for Zibanejad would be heartbreaking. I would think his value is close to Kreider's.
I’d do a package of Kampf + Jarnkrok + FLA 2nd 25’ + future 2nd or 3rd.

Ziba could have a very short list and we could be on it so he can play with Nylander.

NYR gets some solid filler players which could be flipped in the future and picks in what seems to be a transition year for them.

Reshaping the bottom six, with Marner most likely gone we’ll want some players who can play on the PK as well (Laughton, Kunin, Tanev).

McMann(1.35) - Tavares(5) - Kunin(1.75)
Tanev(2.25) - Laughton(1.5) - Raddysh(1.5)

Yeah we could deal OEL too.
OEL can play left side though , and has a bit of offense. I think you get more back for Carlo which is a key for me if they want to improve by trade.. The elephant in the room is Mo because he would be hard if not impossible to move but he is also due for a good year based on his cycle :)

I wonder why there isn't more Patty Kane speculation? He's still a near-ppg player, plays well in the playoffs, born in Buffalo, was Matthews' idol growing up, and might be the closest available player to Mitch in terms of offensive style/ability. Won't be expensive and short term.

Rielly for Zibanejad would make the most sense for both teams, assuming Rielly is willing to go to NYC. Same term, similar cost, similar point in their careers where they've both been great players but are now declining. NYR want to move off K. Miller and Soucy so they will be very weak at LD.

If that were to happen I wonder if a Walman for McMann swap makes sense. Both would be pending UFAs, Edmonton is going to be in cap trouble next season because Draisaitl will be making 5.5M more and Bouchard will probably get a 6-6.5M raise. They are also rumored to bring back Frederic which probably comes in around 3M. Edmonton is perfectly fine at LD to move on from Walman with Ekholm/Nurse/Kulak all signed for a combined 18M.

McMann would be a perfect LW for McDavid with his high end speed and finishing ability. Edmonton would also be considered his local team (although still 200km away). I could see him re-signing there.

Walman would step into Rielly's role and quite honestly fill it well but at half the cost.

Treliving has a history of trading for young, big, mobile defencemen in the past (Hamilton and Hanafin). It wouldn’t surprise me if he’s got serious interest in Miller.

If I had to take a guess our interest in Kane may depend on what happens with Domi.

Man, I get it's a discount for probably the first two years.

But Tavares at 6 years AND over 5m AAV is not great.

I cant say I agree with CJ's opinion
3x7 would be a reasonable number for Tavares (21 mil total), 6x4 is more than reasonable and works out to more $$ in JT's pocket at 24 mil. ...cant really see him playing at top level for more than 3 years, after that he'd be on Spezza 1 mil a season deals, so, 6x4 is a v-good compromise and works out to the exact same $ figure without deferred $$ too.

I'm way too lazy to figure out if the cap works but

Knies - Matthews - Domi
Marchand - Zibs - Nylander
McMann/Trade/FA - Tavares - Trade/Fa
Lorentz/Jeannot - Laughton - Tanev

Is probably an upgrade on our forwards from last year, especially if Matthews is a bit more healthy.

I said this a few days ago. Marchand apparently would like to play in Toronto (coming from someone who knows him well). But only after exhausting Fla first. Not saying it's a good or bad idea. But he has looked great this playoff. Problem is, he will want to get paid after getting underpaid all those years in Boston.

Replace Zib and ghe Rangers with Mathews and the Leafs and this post reads exactly like what our problem is…….
seriously? you must be kidding, Matthews plays defense at a Selke level, and was hurt all season and finished with 78pts in 68 games, that is outstanding for most players, but a 'down' season for Matthews while still potting 33 goals. Matthews has not been properly utilized on the PP going on 3 seasons now, he should be the #1 option, and his 1-timer should be constantly set up, but, he was just another guy on the PP, and that is poor coaching.

Zibs and the Rangers issues is nothing like our issues.

If that's the case, we probably sign him. He either wants a lot of money or a place he can make a lot of money. Toronto could give him endorsements plus will probably a be a little higher on the AAV compared to Florida.

Outside of Matthews, Nylander, and Rielly the Leafs dont really having anyone making big money. If Brad can make Kampf, and Jarnkrok disappear he will have almost $30 million to work with but it does goe fast.

I assume Knies will be $7 million which brings you down to ~$23 million to sign quite a few forwards and assuming no tinkering on defense.

In a cap world, I dont think it makes sense to pay much more than $1.5 million for 4th line wingers. The way they are talking with Tavares is making me nervous. He clearly has no leadership and he will decline. To give him term and money is textbook Leafs. I would much rather Brad take his chances with someone new.

It sounds like Marchand may want to come to Toronto for all the right reasons (Money). I cannot see that contract play out well. He is likely going to be $7.5 +. Maybe Cowan can make the team and drop McMann to the 4th line? I am not sure he is consistent enough for a top 6 role. He was pretty invisible in the playoffs which was scary. Give what he is paid, I dont think people are as annoyed as Marner but he isnt the player I would hitch my wagon to.

Tavares all things equal is probably worth $8-9 million x 3 years. If you spread it over 6 years I would expect the cap to come down half to $4.5-5. If the leafs need to pay $7 million x 6 years he is going to end up getting bought out in 3-4 years.
You mean outside of 34, 88, 16, 44, and 92, because until July 1st their all Leafs, and let’s not forget Bubbles could still run it back…..

Many assume he is re-signing in Detroit as he made that public a few months ago but I wonder why it's not done yet unless he is contemplating retirement. Would be a great situation for him being close to home on a team that is close. Also makes you wonder with Toews in the mix that perhaps there could be a reunion of sorts. Would be a great short term Marner replacement with dollars to add on the rest of the roster.

I don’t, not much sandpaper in Ehlers’ game imo if the goal is to change the DNA he doesn’t move the needle in that regard……..

Can't have an entire roster of grinders that can't score either.

I'm all for Marchand, Bennett and Perry or any other gritty kinda player you can think of but we had a hard time gaining the zone and scoring goals in the playoffs.

You need talent, grit and speed.

Marchand - 7.5Mx2-3
Knies - 6.5Mx3
Tavares - 5Mx(?)
Perbix - 2.5Mx4
Perry - 1.5Mx1
Holmberg 1.25Mx2
Lorentz 1.15Mx8

Rielly for Zibanejad
McMann for Walman
Benoit for Pospisil
Kampf+Robertson+25 2nd for Eberle (50% retained)
Jarnkrok for future considerations

Knies-Matthews-Domi
Marchand-Zibanejad-Nylander
Pospisil-Tavares-Eberle
Lorentz-Laughton-Perry
Holmberg

McCabe-Tanev
Walman-Carlo
OEL-Perbix
Myers

Stolarz
Woll

Cap hit: 94.63M

Can Domi play on the LW?

I wonder with the roster above if

Knies - Matthews - Marchand
Domi - Zib - Nylander

Would be better, you can still play line 1 as a defensive line if needed.
