Roster Building/Team Building/Future Trade/Drafting thread.

If this team once again fails to proceed very far in the playoffs, what would you want them to do?

With Knies' extension coming how much cap space do people anticipate the Leafs having assuming Marner is gone?
https://puckpedia.com/team/toronto-maple-leafs

According to this website they have about $25.7 million in cap space at the moment. Reaves, Kampf, Jarnkrok, Meyers if Brad can make them disappear is about another $5 million.

I assume Knies will be around $7 million x 5-7 years depending on how much he learned from his linemates.

If Brad can make the riff raff go away and gives Knies $7 million he would have about $23 million to play with.

Our defense and goaltending was ok so he can focus on the forwards although if Provorov or Ekblad wanted to come to Toronto I think he would need to make space for that.

If we take Tavares at face value, I would take him back at the Tanev contract up to $5 million He would have to really love it here though as I am sure he can get Nelson money if not more.

Tavares @ $5 million

Leaves us with $18 million. Assume Brad resigns Lorentz and Pacioretty at a $1 million each it leaves us with $16 million.

I think it is not unreasonable to think Cowan pushes for a spot either. Less $850,000.

Leaves us with about $15 million for a 1RW and a 3C.

I would look into Giroux/Granlund/ Bjugstad for 3C and Marchand/ Kane/Duchene/ Ehlers/Bowser for 1W.

If some money left over we can look into B Tanev, Jeannot, Dvorak.

In a scenario where Ekblad or Provorov wanted to come here we could look to Move Reilly, Carlo, or McCabe and mix match to get other players and money to work.

I would love to trade for Marchment but not sure what we could put together to make it interesting for Dallas? McMann, Carlo? Prospects?

Knies. Matthews. Xxxx
Domi Tavares Nylander
McCann. Xxxxx. Cowan
Lorentz. Laughton. Pacioretty

Reilly. Carlo
McCabe. Tanev
Benoit. OEL

Stolarz
Woll

Dallas is looking for a top 4 RD. Perhaps we could do something with Carlo while perhaps signing Fabbro or Ekblad to take his spot.

Carlo (3.49M) + Kampf (2.4M) for Marchment (4.5M) + Bourque (894K) + 2026 SRP

I think they want to shed cap, not necessarily move Marchment. If they wanted to just move Marchment a Domi- Marchment trade may be a starting point.

saw this on twitter thought it was interesting...

I think Tavares is still better than Kadri at the moment and not sure if we can get Kadri. May be easier to trade for Karlsson or sign Granlund. I also think Kane, Tavares, Knies all low in $.

I think the defense played well but giving the injury history we probably need to try to sign a top 4 defenseman because if one or more go down things get dicey.

Trading for players like Zibby & Bert for pennies on the dollar are the moves Toronto should be looking into.

It's not hard to see someone like Zibby regaining his form playing along side Nylander & first PP reps. Now there's massive risk at 8.5m for 5 years if he flops, but at the current state of the Leafs, it's probably a risk they need to take.

To Toronto: 7th Round Draft Pick
To New Jersey: David Kampf

Its the type of stuff they're going to have to look at and get creative.

They need to stock draft picks now so it'll only be hockey trades ... players for players or they sign guys July 1st.

Treliving has always said the big moves come now in the summer for him so I expect them to be fairly big players in the next month.

There might be a few surprises.

Definitely league wide there will be. The cap is going way up.

I think the next few years will be a bit crazier.

Something on the lines of makes Toronto harder + deeper to play with....

Dumping Reaves + Kampf + Jarnkrok for nothing, and trading a draft pick + Roberson for Marchment

Knies (7.5m) - Matthews - Domi
Marchment (4.5m) - Zibanejab(8.5m) - Nylander
McMann - Tavares (4.75m) - Mantha (2.75m)
Jeannot (2.5m) - Laughton - Patches (1m)

They don't really have a choice to be creative if they want to get better, limited draft picks, this years UFA crop is bad. Treliving I have a feeling will be in on the mix on a lot of stuff.

Jake McCabe and Pontus Holmberg to Utah for Lawson Crouse and Michael Kesselring

David Kampf and Nick Robertson to Chicago for Tyler Bertuzzi

Calle Jarnkrok to whomever for whatever

Re-sign Tavares
Sign Granlund, Jeannot, and Tanev

Matthew Knies - Auston Matthews - Max Domi
Bobby McMann - Mikael Granlund - William Nylander
Lawson Crouse - John Tavares - Tyler Bertuzzi
Brandon Tanev - Scott Laughton - Tanner Jeannot

Morgan Rielly - Chris Tanev
ORL - Brendan Carlo
Simon Benoit - Michael Kesselring

(if LA, Vegas, or Colorado decide to shed Danault, Karlsson, or Coyle, we use McMann as the base for that trade and sign Connor Brown or Jack Roslovic instead of Mikael Granlund)

Bertuzzi.

Scored more with the pathetic Hawks than he did with Toronto.

So they want to buy him out because he contributed what was expected?

What's the real reason? Did he call out Bedard, and hurt his feelings?
Bad influence?

Regardless I'd be interested in bringing him back. Tre apparently almost extended him last time around but they were a hair too far apart on aav. Obviously that's not an issue this time around

Kesselring is a good target.
This guy has legit skills and could be in tough for deserved minutes with Durzi/Marino on the right side of Utah D.

Why would we trade mccabe that’s non sense

If Ek is obtainable for the right price I would sign him and deal Carlo for my top 9 forward.. Ekblad and one of Ehlers or Boeser as well. Moving Rielly out would be nice too but even a poor puck mover is better than none and I don't see an FA lefties.

Yeah exactly. Spend the cash on Ekblad upgrade the forward group by moving Carlo. He’s pretty good but doesn’t have the anger management problems of an Ekblad.

Yeah we could deal OEL too.

I quite like OEL, and I'd say it may be Tres most underrated moves.

BUT, his value has probably dramatically rebounded. And if the Leafs plan on bringing an upgrade to the top. Four via a free agency signing, his caphit starts to get rich for a third pairing guy and makes more sense to trade.

The fact is,.the Leafs are going to need to bring in some new bodies other than free agents this offseason. They're going to need to trade some things of value. If he could be flipped for a centre (or say Carlo for a centre) the team be ones better for it
