Roster Building/Team Building/Future Trade/Drafting thread.

If this team once again fails to proceed very far in the playoffs, what would you want them to do?

Rangers Have Approached Top Center

According to The Athletic's Arthur Staple, the Rangers have reportedly already asked their top centerman to consider a fresh start, noting that finding a fit for the 32-year-old that has five years remaining on his deal.
"There's a chance that Drury has already worked it out with Zibanejad, who has five years at a $8.5 million average annual value remaining plus a full no-move clause, that moving on would be best," wrote Staple before suggesting the Leafs as a potential target. "They'd still need to find a fit -the Leafs might have some interest and some space to fill."

The cap hit is manageable, but the five years remaining and no-movement clause might be tough to swallow for the Maple Leafs even though Zibanejad is 32-years-old.

If the Leafs were to add the Swedish pivot, he would have an instant spot centering William Nylander and it would allow the Leafs to shift John Tavares to the wing or into the third-line center spot - as long as they are able to re-sign him.
How refreshing to see a team that actually does the hard work to improve their team instead of standing pat………

I’m thinking potential targets in soft deals would be

Hamilton (need to get him out with Hughes and then maybe Hughes contracts). Didn’t Tre trade him?

Zibby. Need a 2 C. He makes money and has a NMC. RHC makes 8,5. Are he and Willy friends?

Karlson. Need a legit ppqB

petro/roy/karlson. If he is healthy

We have cap to spend. Need a C/grit and a pp and puck moving threat
There’s a reason Hamilton has bounced around the league his entire career, I want no part him playing in Toronto………

Well, like the New York Rangers, it's the Toronto Maple Leafs who were pushed out of the playoffs this season by the Florida Panthers.

The irony is too rich for you, right?

And they still save money, he's a 2 million dollar damn making over 7

He’s not the #1 defenseman we all want him to be, but you don’t have to be ridiculous. If he was a UFA right now, how much would he get? 5-6 million most likely.

He’s one of the only Leafs who significantly raises his game in the playoffs. Look at how he’s produced over the last half dozen playoff runs - he’s right up there with the all the elite guys.

His offense in the playoffs is fine but go look at goals 1,3,4:

This is why people want Rielly gone.

I like how our blueline is shaping up but there’s always room for improvement. With Miller available, I’d be all in on that. Then going after Ekblad in free agency would be icing on the cake.

To Toronto: K’Andre Miller + Brennan Othmann
To Rangers: Morgan Rielly + Easton Cowan + Nick Robertson + 3rd Round Draft Pick

Miller - Ekblad
McCabe - Tanev
Ekman Larsson - Carlo

Dreaming here, but that would be the best blueline in the league.

That Rangers trade would be pretty good if you take out Miller, Rielly, Cowan and the 3rd. Othmann is the right kind of youth the Leafs should be bringing in. The big downside is his speed.

Ok, I looked at them....

#1 - Rielly makes a totally appropriate pinch along the boards. It's an isolated Florida forward, and both Knies and Marner are back to defend. Neither forward takes a hard stride until it's too late.

Rielly, should have been MORE aggressive here, not less. Get that game closed and don't even allow that pass in the first place. He's not totally innocent here, but Marner and Knies are way more to blame on that goal, especially Knies.

#3 - Rielly fell down while he was trying to join a rush that was turned over. Once he got up, I would agree that he was slow to identify the threat. Nylander loses a board battle, and then backchecks aimlessly.

Oddly enough, Seth Jones created that goal by doing what Rielly got blamed for on #1.

#4 - That is OELs guy 100%.

I guess you could say Rielly allowed an easy zone entry, though he didn't have the greatest support for that.

This is why people want Rielly gone.

Because they can't identify the correct guys who actually caused goals against?

There's plenty of times Rielly butchers defensive assignments, but the above clips aren't that.

Do those goals go in if McCabe is on for Rielly? Maybe #4 but I doubt the rest.

If McCabe makes the correct plays, yeah.

As I said, on the first one, Rielly made the right read and decision. McCabe should pinch on that play, and the forwards not backchecking caused the odd-man rush.

On the second, that weak side defender should jump in. Rielly cought an edge and fell… shit happens.

Is it the correct decision if you can’t execute it?

I kind of like it, but it is a huge gamble with Marchand being a 35+.

You know Matthews will get Knies right?

2nd. line will get one of Jeannot, Holmberg, Lorentz.

I mean, if you look aside from the first (which is still a good shot), there are other people who are at fault as well. Tavares just skates into a sea of Panthers on the 3rd.

I'm not opposed to moving because the team needs to change, but for me, it's just the same age old thing a lot of Leaf fans like to do and that pick a whipping boy and consolidate all the problems down to him, when really the whole D core is still in need of retooling IMHO.

Do those goals go in if McCabe is on for Rielly? Maybe #4 but I doubt the rest.

Well, he does get caught on the 2nd Lundell goal kind of badly there, but as does Carlo, and it's quite a bad rebound from Woll.
