I get, and agree with what you are saying in some ways, but that's kind of exactly the bold moves the Florida have made. They've made bets on players not meeting their expectations elsewhere, who then went on to meet them in Florida.
I suspect the right NYR player to go after, would have been Kakko. With a $2.4 mil contract, then a RFA, he put up 30 points in 49 games for Seattle. The acquisition cost was less, the contract less, and the production about the same. I suspect his second contract will be significantly less than Laf's too. I had talked about Kakko being the right target, before he was traded.
That's the key, finding people who might be able to outperform their contracts, who for whatever reason, are underperforming in their current situation. I think Krebs is a guy like that.
Benoit isn't perfect, but he's outperformed his contract, so has McMann. We need more guys, who can provide value for their $.
