If this team once again fails to proceed very far in the playoffs, what would you want them to do?

Good. Before the draft potentially. It will be huge so that they can navigate the following week with confidence.

I suppose it puts enough structure in place on the cap sheet and depth chart that you clarify whether a Marner-Marchand-Bennett-Boeser permutation works.

That's a great picture, but ice time distributions don't lie. McBain was 10th in ice time among forwards. Stenlund and Kerfoot were 7th and 6th respectively.

I think he's more than a 4th liner, but their coaching staff disagrees.

McBain would be a great reclamation project.

The man wants his money. Tre needs to give it to him.

His next contract is going to be rough, but if we're in for a question mark of a season, let's at least be entertained while watching

Nice to see Toronto endorsements recognized in the media. Marchy is the type of player that could pull in good monies, and at his price range, probably quite competitive against Florida tax savings.

I’m sure he’ll get his points but I don’t see whoever signs him getting the “run through a wall and chew his own leg off to win” version of Marchand. Maybe Colorado and Florida get some version of that but not anywhere he comes in to be ‘the guy’ and fix the locker room, it stinks of Messier’s years in Vancouver.
Marchy will bring what he brings. If the team around him doesn't work right it won't look very productive. Get the rest right and he will be a big positive. I think we're getting close, just not quite Florida, but another year in front of us to improve.

No need to pay a second. If they're dumping Karlsson, McMann will be enough. If they aren't dumping him, that won't be enough.
Dumping him only matters if there is little interest. If enough teams want Karlsson, then Vegas reasons for moving him start to not matter very much.

You know the main point of this discussion is player like mcdavid draisaitl, barkov, Tkachuk, kane, toews, oreilly and cie had been able to have succes and elevate their game with bottom 6 player on their line and Matthews should be able to do the same...
I definitely agree with you there!

I wouldn’t say our fanbase is spoilt in the least. The combination of Matthews health, contract term and poor playoff track record are factors that definitely contribute to people at least considering moving on.
If other teams are offering a good package for 34 I’d move him in a New York minute, guys skills are declining along with his health and he’s a joke of a leader, only a coward blames his teammates for his lack of production……..

I think your psychodrama misses the other ironic outcome, which is we corrupt Brad Marchand with the blue and white disease and finally bring him down with a pure cash payoff.

But no, in all seriousness I think would be a weird and positive outcome. His presence could only help educate the remaining core guys on how deficient they are at being competitors and they finally see up close and personal what it takes for a guy with a decade of extra wear and tear and half a foot shorter to dominate them every time.
Psychodrama indeed, this fanbase………

So, if Rielly refuses to waive and JT re-signs, what exactly is changing?

I'd argue Marner was a bigger mouth piece than Tavares and was Matthews wingman. Without Marner it gives us the potential to sign or trade for at least 2 players who may be able to make a cultural difference.

For example exchanging Marner and Marchand would give us a different element.

We may be able to make a trade for someone like Karlsson and/or Marchment. We may be able to sign bottom 6 players like Toews and Tanev. We may even be able to sign Kane.

Imagine a world that looked something like the following. Obviously the players would need to execute but they seem like a harder working group.

Knies. Matthews. Kane
Marchand. Tavares. Nylander
Domi. Karlsson Cowan
Lorentz. Laughton Tanev
Toews/ Pacioretty

Reilly. Carlo
OEL. Tanev
McCabe. Fabbro
Benoit

All trades should be made for a reason, improve the team, clear cap space, grant a wish for a retiring player, remove a distraction, get a better player, get a better fit and there are very few players that can't be traded.

I have no idea if I would make this trade.

McDavid and Bouchard
for
MacKinnon and Makar

I'm sure there is some analytics that would give an opinion on it.

However I'd do this one.

MacKinnon and Makar
for
Matthews and marner
Everyday of the week, and twice on Sunday………

Ofc this franchise is spoiled right now, we watched Tyler Bozak as our number 1C and begged and begged for a real center, now after 9 years, they want to change that. Watched the team from 2006-2016 be a laughing stock. Now people are talking about blowing it up.. You don't trade 1Cs or 1Ds.. you trade skilled wingers first.

He's struggled last 3 playoff rounds, and is 10 points under PPG in the playoffs...Toronto should probably do some form of load management towards the end of the season for him. He's had nagging injuries but nothing serious that's cause him to missed months upon months.
58 years and counting, I’ve seen a lot of players come and go, but 34 has to be the most pathetic “leader” this teams ever had, I mean he’s make Phaneuf look like the second coming of Mark Messier and that’s saying a hell of a lot…….

In reality, it's the biggest change needed. Our bottom six haven't provided anything when it matters. Restructuring our cap would be to bring in guys who can make you more dangerous, deeper down the lineup.
They’ve had a revolving door bottom six for half a decade, do so has let to little success because the real problem is the core, not changing that is why there’s no success……..

Damn was really opening up to the idea of adding Kreider, especially with the cost being very low. Anaheim might be a team to watch this off-season, especially with Quenneville behind the bench now. Kreider - McTavish could be a nice duo on the second line. I can definitely see Anaheim being a strong possibility for Marner. Definitely a team to watch this off-season.
