Roster Building/Team Building/Future Trade/Drafting thread.

If this team once again fails to proceed very far in the playoffs, what would you want them to do?

There are so many conflicting reports about Bennett. It's probably far too early and he probably doesn't know himself, he's still playing. Same for Marchand really.

Smoke will be a lot stronger in 2 weeks or so. When the draft comes and goes, I think it will dictate a lot of what we do on July 1st.

Smoke is already pretty strong here in Calgary ... hoping the wind changes direction.

So is it true discussions can take place before official free agency on July 1st.?

I've read contracts can be discussed before July 1st., but formal agreements must await July 1st.

So Leafs would likely know their situation and have plans to sign players July 1st.

It's crazy to me Knies still isn't signed. They have to get that out of the way as soon as possible and go with full marks on retooling the forward ranks into a contender. Draft week is always a good time for trades one way or another. Around July 1st it's a lot harder to find takers because most teams use that time to load up on free agents and then it's 2 months of almost nothing.
Yeah both the numbers for Bridge and long term extension seem fine....

I wonder if it's partly because they are waiting to see what Marner does. If you sign Marner for 13m, is it better to bridge Knies?

Teams can talk to free agents a week before July 1st. They aren't supposed to talk numbers/term or whatever but it's clear that they do, or at least teams are provided with what the player is looking for. July 1st noon hits and tons of players sign for a reason.

If the Panthers can trade Evan Rodrigues, will they be able to bring back Bennet, Marchand, and Ekblad? Assuming they all take a slight pay cut?

I think Bennett and Ekblad returning to florida is set in stone as it gets. Those guys dont want to leave. I just don't know if they can fit Marchand in
Those players aren’t taking a pay cut with the salary cap set to increase 30% over the next three years. One and possibly two of them will not be re-signed.

I'm not sure what the hold up is. Marner seems 99% gone but if Treliving pulls off a miracle there and retains him, he better have some insane recipe in the oven to pull off a DNA change to this team.

It would be very Leafy to give Knies a bridge only for him to explode into a 10M+ player for his next deal instead of locking him up at a 7-8M deal now.

Treliving should just announce publicly (through Friedman, not announce it himself) that every team is open to negotiate with Marner on an 8 year deal starting today. If he wants an 8 year deal give him 3 weeks to negotiate it.

Cam Robinson of Elite Prospects says that there’s real smoke that the Florida Panthers could be gearing up to make a run at Mitch Marner.

================================

$15 mil for Mitch? Seriously.. This is crazy talk.

And Mitch to Florida... for how much? That would suggest they don't extend Bennett or Ekblad.... I think I'd rather have Bennett AND Ekblad for about the same $ Thanks.

Sign and trade could be tough

No 3rd until 2027, if we did a sign and trade...a 2nd seems like too much right?

Anaheim, Carolina and Vegas also linked to various extents.

Why would he do that?
He would first call Marners agent to see if that interests them and then he would contact the GM's directly.

I doubt very much GM's are following Friedman to find out the status of players.

I am not sure which channel makes the most sense for this communication but I personally would love for it to be made public.

Is Florida ready to give him a higher contract than any of their forwards? Part of what makes them so good is their contracts are all way under market value. I don't see it. It makes very little sense to me.

Anaheim though... now that's the team I think that makes a lot of sense. Marner gets his money, he gets to go to a great climate with anonymity. They have a new coach who is insanely respected in terms of getting the job done. I wouldn't be surprised if they even offered him the C in the next year or so.

Carolina has plenty of cap, so they won't really need to do a S&T unless they want to give him 8 years.

(Carolina maybe the best situation in the league in terms of roster, cap and assets)

Danault, Kadri, W. Karlsson, ROR, JG Pageau, B. Schenn (not sure about that one), Alex Wennberg (underrated target), Zacha and Zibanejad in this article from Siegel.

Danault would be a dream tbh.

I've had him as 1a and WK as 1b for me this offseason.

Kadri would be my guy. I'm biased though. He checks all the boxes you want from a DNA change, but the contract/age is rough.

All those names would be good to fine. It really comes down on the price of acquisition.
Danault would be my guy. Relatively decent contract, played in MTL. Allows Matthews to get more OZ starts and less time on the PK.

Matthews
Danault
Tavares

down the middle would be very nice

Mentioned in the article WK played with Nylander at the world championships. That's an intriguing note. Especially with Vegas apparently wanting Marner.

Acquiring WK and what Mirtle thinks Tavares will sign for. We'd potentially get Tavares and Karlsson for 1m less than what we were paying Marner last year.

So it sounds like Brandon Tanev will most likely be a Leaf, definitely don’t mind the player but I’m hoping we’re smart with the contract, I wouldn’t pay more than 2.25 million per.
