Roster Building/Team Building/Future Trade/Drafting thread.

If this team once again fails to proceed very far in the playoffs, what would you want them to do?

The difference is Tavares is reportedly willing to take a steep discount relative to market rate to stay in Toronto. Reportedly somewhere between 4-5M. Granlund is unlikely to take a steep discount to come to Toronto. He is likely getting 7M+, probably from SJ. Spending 4-5M at for a point per game winger is not inefficient. Spending 7M+ for one-dimensional ~60 point winger is inefficient.

He doesn't need to take a steep discount, but certainly if he wants to go back to the coast on the rebuilding Sharks good for him.

Hockey isn't everything in life, I know living by the ocean is nice.

There are so many conflicting reports about Bennett. It's probably far too early and he probably doesn't know himself, he's still playing. Same for Marchand really.

Smoke will be a lot stronger in 2 weeks or so. When the draft comes and goes, I think it will dictate a lot of what we do on July 1st.

I should say it stems from Mirtle's hit on the radio this morning where a lot of people said that Bennett doesn't want to come home when he was around the NHL combine.

I agree with you though, a lot of people shrugging and not knowing what we could do ahead of the TDL and we pulled Carlo so it's difficult to truly know what's happening.

I feel somewhat confident about a B.Tanev to Toronto scenario even though I don't quite endorse him.

At first I was very against the Kreider idea but I’ve definitely warmed up to it, I think he can still be effective as a second line winger. Sounds like the Rangers are willing to dump him for almost anything, I would get a little creative and try to have them add Othmann. Kid has the tools to be a pretty solid third line winger that brings some physicality. Wonder if something like this would work taking on Kreider’s full salary.

To Toronto: Chris Kreider + Brennan Othmann
To Rangers: Nick Robertson + 3rd Round Draft Pick
I think Kreider may be our best bet in the off-season.

Just 2 years ago, his stats were -> 39(G), 36(A) - 75 points. That's actually amazing. The drop-off last year was directly linked to 2 injuries. If he's ready to go in September, he's a great Marner replacement! Much better than more-of-the-same-type-of-player-as-our-core-guys, Ehlers. Kreider is also at a reasonable cap hit for his production, he's fast and physical. Also, good playoff numbers. If we can get him for a low cost, that is a dream scenario, in my opinion.

I am really starting to come around on the thought that Treliving targets Perbix. He would give the Leafs a very solid 6D. His profile the last 2 years is pretty similar to OEL. I could see a 4x2.5M deal.
It would allow OEL to move back to his natural position where he’s more effective and gives us another lengthy dman in Perbix.

Ekman Larsson - Perbix
Myers

Can definitely see that being our 4-7.

I mean, maybe I'm overreacting but if there's reports a player doesn't want to come here. I kind of am out on the player.

As we've heard multiple times this isn't an easy market to play. If the player is already hesitant about coming here for whatever reason, move on.

Show your work.

There isn’t a major correlation.
B. Tkachuk getting 8.2Mx7 (9.6M today) after putting up a career high 53 point pace in his 3rd season.

Josh Anderson getting 5.5Mx7 (6.4M today) with 1 27G/47P season under his belt, despite only hitting 29 points 2 other times.

Tom Wilson getting 5.17Mx6 (6.2M today) with a career high of 14G/35P.

I don't know how many other real stylistic comparables there are for Knies.

It's certain that there are a lot of players out there, that could fill a lot of holes we have... and many posters have different ideas on how to fill them... the good thing, is there are plenty of names available, so Tre should have some options here.

First things first..

First, sign your UFA's/RFA's ASAP.... First, if these are guys you want to keep, have them signed, no risk they go elsewhere, plus, and more importantly, it gives you an idea of how much cap space you will have left to sign UFA's.

Second... trades. There are all kinds of rumours flying around, that certainly players will be moved, to make cap room for that team to make other changes. W. Karlsson, Kreider, Marchment, E. Kane are all names that have been brought up at various times, and I'm sure there is more. If these players are of interest to Tre, and there is a reasonable deal to be made... these moves should also done in advance of July 1st... You have roster certainty, and again.. you know how much you have left to spend. The same goes for shedding players... Kampf, Jarnkrok... whomever... The sooner you move them, the more other teams have to spend, the better the return... although, you could make the argument that a team missing out on C's, might overpay a little bit to pick up Kampf... I'd suggest moving him ASAP, and not worry about it.

Let's see some action!!! (Though sometimes such moves are held off, until the Cup is over)

Many different reports had Bennett only wanting to play for Florida and Toronto. Some said Toronto was his preferred spot. Mirtle then comes out and says Bennett doesn't want to and thinks he only wants to stay in Florida. It's all various opinions, and I'd be shocked if Bennett even knows himself what he wants to do and where he wants to play.

If the player doesn't want to be here, obviously don't chase them but it's way to early for those comments. This time 7 years ago or whatever, there were so many conflicting reports on John Tavares as well.

I replied on Twitter but basically I would lean into the term more, 8 years 2.5M per.

If he can't play, he can join our coaching staff or front office like Muzzin did.
As stupid as this sounds. I'd love for the leafs to get smart with the 8 year deal, but BOY we would probably hear a report about the NHL looking into the deal right after it was signed.

I also think a lot of it has to do with who his agent is.

Already some chatter about Pietrangelo having health issues, anyone gonna be surprised when he's on LTIR all year and Vegas chases Ekblad or Marner? Teams abuse this stuff already, just like Gourde in Tampa too.

For sure, I completely agree. I just think it will be potentially looked at differently with the Leafs. However they should do a 7-8 year deal if it means giving Tavares a 2-3m AAV

It's crazy to me Knies still isn't signed. They have to get that out of the way as soon as possible and go with full marks on retooling the forward ranks into a contender. Draft week is always a good time for trades one way or another. Around July 1st it's a lot harder to find takers because most teams use that time to load up on free agents and then it's 2 months of almost nothing.
