Knies 8x7.5m. The rumour is 8m on a 8 year deal. I'm hoping with paying him in bonuses it can drop down the AAV 500k-1m.

Tavares 6x4m, yes I know what Nelson signed but Nelson wasn't a 11m player the years prior. Similar to Knies. I'm hoping the bonuses and the insanely long deal knock the AAV by 500k to 1m.

a lot of this roster relies on Cowan being able to make the team and play 3RW for us. This would leave 5.4m for a 3rd line winger and an extra forward.

If Cowan isn't good enough to make the roster. It leaves 6.2m for two third line wingers + an extra forward.

To get the best roster for this and next year, it maybe smart to bridge Knies if the difference is 4-5m compared to 7-8m

Often these type of rumours come to fruition.

Marchand = I think with Knies extension and potentially Bennett and apparently him getting 8m x 3 years, that takes us out on him.

B.Tanev = Meh, honestly rather try to sign Jeannot to play on the 4th line over him, tougher/harder to play against. He might have a little more to give with a north/south system, compared to on the kings kind of trap system.

W.Karlsson = Like it if he's going to be the 2C, would eliminate the need to pay for Bennett in FA.

Riso = I think Toronto had interest in him @ the deadline, but they got Carlo instead... So he's out. Also goes against Tree wanting a little more mobility from our D.

Bennett = Don't mind if he's 2C, but that has to be at 7m-7.5m not this crazy 9m-10m..

We need the best pro scouting department in the world. Unload the brinks truck and bring in the best

This morning, they talked on the radio about potentially pulling a Yanni Gourde contract for Marchand (stretched out AAV which will be buried in the future). If we miss out on Kreider and Bennett, I don't mind that idea.

And a combined lower salary, which is how we add so much depth.

If Matthews goes down you have a top line of Knies-Domi-Brown.

Why would that be the first line?

Your 1+3 RW combined for 34 goals over the last 2 seasons.

That’s equal to last year’s guys.

Then you're hoping that Marchand can carry your 3rd line for a whole season. He spent 370 minutes playing with Coyle last season at 5v5 which is a fair offensive comparison for Colton. Their line scored 12 goals in 370 minutes (15 against).

Every player on the 3rd line is better than last year.

That just isn't a recipe for a succesful regular season which is why I believe this roster would be on the playoff bubble.

The UFAs seem reasonable but I will be shocked if Knies takes 4M on a bridge. I see 6M as the floor for him on a bridge.

It's impatient putting a first round pick 2 years past his draft year on a sheltered 3rd line role with a C that scored at a PPG last year and probably another pretty good player?

There’s no reason to bridge for 6.

JG Pageau has been a replacement level defensive player the last 2 seasons. That’s still fine, he’s not like Laughton or Domi or Nylander where he’s a bad defensive player.

Tavares will likely cost between Pageau’s 5M and Colton’s 4M. For the record - I’d be happy with both players but ideally both on a 3rd line.

If Domi is expected to produce the same offense as Marner I believe you’re setting yourself up for disappointment.

The 3rd line is better but you’re still going to be struggling for offense. Marchand will be forced to drive any and all offense, which he can do, but can he do it for a whole season? Unlikely, given what we saw this past season. McMann-Domi-Robertson scored 43 goals as the 3rd line more or less. Do we really think that 3rd line scores ~65 goals?

That 4th line is not scoring 10 more goals than Lorentz-Kampf-Holmberg’s combined 20. Laughton can score 15 but not with those wingers. We just saw what Laughton's offense looks like without play-driving wingers: 2 goals, 4 assists in 33 games. Jeannot is a shoe-in for 7, Tanev the same.

9x in a row in the playoffs, 4th overall this past season.. Teams don't blow it up like that, unrealistic thinking. Make a big move, yes. Trading everyone and rebuilding after all that, I don't think so.


They pretty much were caught with their pants down due to Shanahan, unwilling to move Marner, when they could have.

I wouldn't say Marner doesn't want to be here, truthfully we don't know anything. Could be like a Stamkos situation, test the waters and see what's there. If he doesn't like it, just stays here.


Like I said in the post above, I wouldn't say it's fair to say he doesn't want to be here, if you got options, why not hear them first, Stamkos did and didn't like what he heard and went back to Tampa.

The only reason why I'd advocate trading Nylander and potentially signing Marner is because of how badly they botched the situation.

It's nice Nylander wants to be here, but he's also been apart of the problem the past 9 years. My only reasoning for it is because at least if they went that route, they could recoup assets instead of letting elite talent walk for nothing.

I also dont want to put our off season plans on hold while we wait for Marner to let us know his decision. UFAs will be signed, trades will be missed....

I know the pickings are very slim this year.

About the only top line player is marner, and on D, Ekblad.

Then Ehlers, Bennett (50 point player), Boeser (50 point player) ...

And Leafs have to compete with all the other teams for these slim pickings.

Coronato is 5'10. Knies is genuinely a top 5 power forward in the game. That's like saying B. Tkachuk only deserves 1M more than Lehkonen.

Personally i don't see any good fit with any of duchene/Granlund with Nylander

I think building a team to play against the Black Hawks/Lightning/Avalanche/Golden Knights/Panthers doesn't look like a winning proposition.

But yes, getting some more grit with skill would be great.

That looks like trading is the next step.

You can say the same about Tavares though.

The difference is Tavares is reportedly willing to take a steep discount relative to market rate to stay in Toronto. Reportedly somewhere between 4-5M. Granlund is unlikely to take a steep discount to come to Toronto. He is likely getting 7M+, probably from SJ. Spending 4-5M at for a point per game winger is not inefficient. Spending 7M+ for one-dimensional ~60 point winger is inefficient.

At first I was very against the Kreider idea but I’ve definitely warmed up to it, I think he can still be effective as a second line winger. Sounds like the Rangers are willing to dump him for almost anything, I would get a little creative and try to have them add Othmann. Kid has the tools to be a pretty solid third line winger that brings some physicality. Wonder if something like this would work taking on Kreider’s full salary.

There is no justification for a 29g 58 pt 22 year old to get 6 on a bridge.

There are so many conflicting reports about Bennett. It's probably far too early and he probably doesn't know himself, he's still playing. Same for Marchand really.

Smoke will be a lot stronger in 2 weeks or so. When the draft comes and goes, I think it will dictate a lot of what we do on July 1st.
