Roster Building/Team Building/Future Trade/Drafting thread.

If this team once again fails to proceed very far in the playoffs, what would you want them to do?

I think you’re onto something with the rocket idea

Heck I’d take half of Mcdavids effort

Why couldn’t our 69 goal guy play close to McDavids level?

Also Matthews is not on his first year
if we are comparing effort, compare it in the D-zome where McDavid is poor compared to Matthews.
'effort' will not separate you from a double team, only elite will do that.
Yes, this WAS Matthews 1st year on his new contract ...next season will be #2
why cant any player play close to McDavids level?
there is a reason he is 'generational'

Laughton is a great trade piece to get some assets back. Trade him this season when his value is the highest and then have a Marlie ready to come in

Dubas did this with Sandin and it turned out to be Cowan.

They aren’t a true contender so best to re-tool and build it back up
Is Laughton’s value really at its highest right now after he came to a playoff team and was determined to be a 4C and proceeded to put up no offense and got caved in defensively?

Domi on the first line, is kind of one of those... if we really improve and spend big money for depth... ok, I can live with it... but that didn't happen here.

Laughton isn't a second line player. Our season will be pretty terrible if that's the case. We need someone far better there, though I agree he's best off on the wing... hopefully on the fourth line.

I can live with;

Knies Matthews xxx
xxx Bennett Nylander
McMann Tavares Cowan..

But I want different xxx's.
nobody mentions Kuzmenko, but he should seriously be consider as a secondary scoring option. he scored 39 as a rookie, so, he can burry the biscuit, and maybe Berube can get his game rounded out.

Left shot RW and a goal scoring threat, and potentially much more of a scoring threat than Marner was, I'd buy low on him.

No I’m saying get him some offensive production this season around good players and THEN trade him

@ToneDog

If I had more access to data, I’d be scouring this list, for more players on the right and moving on from as much on the left as I could.

I thought the whole Idea would be have Domi on top line to get the best out of his skillset, and is at least a decent stylistic fit on the line

Use cap savings to build a much more robust middle 6 forwards. Gets the best use of capspace for us moving forward.

If we sign Bennet, do we have enough cap to build a well rounded middle 6? Or do we end up with the same problem we had with the big 4

That depends on what he signs for, what Tavares sign for. If you can get them on contracts for $12 mil combined, probably by being creative with JT... yes, it's possible.

I've got

Knies Matthews P. Kane
E. Kane Bennett Nylander
Marchment Tavares McMann
Laughton Quillan Jeannott/Anderson (bought out $1.5 mil)
Holmberg
and it fits. Now you can substitute a whole bunch of guys for E. Kane/Marchment and have $10 mil to spend doing it.... I mean, you could do Ehlers/Cowan for example. Or pick a different 4C.. all kinds of substitution possibilities, without getting worked up about the names there... But I think it's possible, yes.

Yeah, something really tanked his NHL career after such a promising start.

He should be a buy-low, even with his PPG in the playoffs.

One of the slowest skaters in the NHL. 20.84 mph highest recorded speed this year.. League average is 22.18mph.

This is someone you probably take a long look at. I would assume the Hawks and Ducks will be all over him though.

Not really, ANA/CHI are full of LD and D in general.

Detroit has a spot for 2nd pair LD
Pittsburgh also needs LD
LAK needs LD if Gavrikov leaves
Calgary needs LD

Good odds with the above.

Are they? LaCombe, Zellweger and Minty are left handed with potential. Zellweger, Gudas and Trouba are right handed. Good potential, sure, but definitely could use more quality. Hawks are not loaded with anything either. Both could use a good boost of quality regardless of handedness.

Either way, many rebuilding/retooling teams will have interest.

If Miller was RD, I think Anaheim would have a bit more interest.

I think they put Zellweger to RD a little bit.

I mean maybe if they put Zellweger in the package for Miller specifically that kinda shuffles one in/one out kind of thing but then NYR are employing Soucy and Zellweger, they'd need to land Gavrikov basically to start to save that D core.

Buffalo could use a LD to pair with Power.

They could send Samuelsson and Peterka. Rangers could add Laf. Plus whatever to balance it out.
