Roster Building/Team Building/Future Trade/Drafting thread.

If this team once again fails to proceed very far in the playoffs, what would you want them to do?

Leafs trade Rielly
Calgary trades Andersson & Lomberg

Lomberg is one bad ass mf'er

Leafs trade Matthews, Nylander
Jersey trades Hischier, Meier, Hamilton, Nemec

Leafs trade Robertson, Jarnkrok, Kampf for picks

Leafs sign Ehlers 7x8
Leafs sign Boeser 7x8
Leafs sign Tavares 3x6
Leafs sign Knies 6x7

Knies(7)/Hischier(7.25)/Boeser(8)
Ehlers(8)/Tavares(6)/Meier(8.8)
Lomberg(2)/Domi(3.75)/McMann(1.5)
Lorentz(1)/Holmberg(1)/Laughton(1.5)
*Cowan(1)

OEL(3.5)/Hamilton(9)
McCabe(4.5)/Tanev(4.5)
Carlo(3.5)/Andersson(4.5)
*Benoit(1.5), Danford (1), Nemec(1)

Woll(3.5)
Stolarz(2.5)
*Hildeby(1)

Total = 94.3
this team is SO much worse than what we have now, we'd be fighting for a wildcard spot and be lucky to get it.

Tavares at 6x3.5m or 6x3 would be nice work. He'd probably be an effective winger later in his career imo.

If you could pull this off and sign Knies for 8x8, would mean you'd have them for the same price as Tavares last year.

That's the kind of creativity that would be very interesting. Long-term it's a huge problem but something Treliving knows all too well -- it will be an issue for someone else. LTIR retirement would almost be guaranteed in the last year or two. It's basically like a form of deferral payments I guess?

The cap hit is pretty low for his production in the short-term though. Not sure they'd go for it. JT should be able to get 6 to 8M on the open market on a 2-3 year deal and still get a contract or two in the latter part of his career. But maybe he'd do it to secure his ability to retire here?

Is the stupidly long contract for the 30+ crowd the new backdiving deal?

Who does he complement? He is a net negative on the ice if he isn't stapled to Matthews and Berube has made it clear he won't do that.

You said it - he compliments Matthews very well.

There are two reasons he didn’t play with Matthews last year. One is Marner, and that reason will be gone. The second reason was Domi was needed at center, where he is less effective but still better than our other options. Hopefully that reason will be eliminated in the offseason.

It he doesn’t play with Matthews, which as we saw is no guarantee, he is a detriment to whichever line he is on.

Do we think Bennett and Nylander fit together very well?
I think they actually would, Nylander is as chill as you can get, and Bennett in the playoffs, is surprisingly calm, and plays a smart slow game, which I hadnt noticed in the regular season.

though, a Laughton - Bennett - Domi line would be far more fun to watch or Marchand - Bennett - Domi if we could get 2 bigger names

How does Florida not extend him for that though?

Maybe they feel they’ve already got the best years of Bennett. Florida is very good at not overpaying guys and letting guys go at the right time.

I honestly thought they would take a step back with their D-core but they always manage to find quality replacements.

They also have Lundell ready to take over the 2C spot.

Man the Leafs need to hire Florida’s entire scouting staff.

NSH and NJD are July 1st or later due to signing bonuses owed

NYI would need to be draft day weekend

DAL/CHI deals - no timeline

TOR/PIT would need to be near July 1st

I love the forwards but I don't think this solves the offense from the back end

485k cap space in case I didn't sufficiently pay anyone enough.

The Rielly and Domi trades are the wild cards...

Perhaps in 10 years.
Why wait? It's possible in 13 months.

I was a regular poster on this board 9 years ago when Stamkos re-signed in Tampa saying Tavares was coming to Toronto in 2018 and everyone had the same reaction as McDavid today.

Go read the threads from this time in 2018 and everyone was saying there's no chance Tavares was coming.

Florida's current management is fairly shrewd, and a 7+ mil over 7-8 years for a guy whose hit 50 points once in his career might be giving them second thoughts.

Its worth considering for the Leafs, simply because I value the next 3ish years far more from a competitive standpoint than years 5-7 (the team may very well be rebuilding by then)

Is the stupidly long contract for the 30+ crowd the new backdiving deal?

Pretty much, as long as they sign it before their 35th birthday and that way retirement wipes the caphit away. Front loading a 6-7 year deal gives player and team what they want with reduced risk here. I'd like to see the Leafs use it more often

Adding Sam Bennett wouldn't just be a one man plug and play strategy. I think you would have to add a couple of running mates for him, like a Brad Marchand maybe, like a Tanner Jeannot maybe and build a little club pack of assholes, give Scott Laughton different marching orders and top 6 time. Maybe Max Domi is more empowered to play a snot based game, maybe Matthew Knies is drawn into the battle more. The whole emotional temperature and physicality of the team will have to change a lot.
I like the idea of Laughton playing wing in a top 6 role. I'm assuming you didn't mean C.

IF Bennett is acquired and Tavares accepts 3C money and goes into the season knowing that is his role, try Max at 4C?

Lorentz Domi Jeannot

Just go out and be as annoying as possible.

Laughton on JTs wing would be a good start for a competitive 3rd line.

I asked the question earlier about trading Woll and signing a $1M veteran. Any thoughts on that?
