Roster Building/Team Building/Future Trade/Drafting thread.

If this team once again fails to proceed very far in the playoffs, what would you want them to do?

TBL just got scary. Here's my prediction for their off season:

Cirelli for Tuch (50%)
Raddysh for McMann
Moser, Geekie for E. Karlsson (50%)
Howard for Kesselring

They'll run out:
Guentzel-Point-Kucherov
Hagel-Paul-Tuch
McMann-Gourde-Bjorkstrand
Giregensons-Goncalves-Chaffee

Hedman-Karlsson
McDonagh-Cernak
Lilleberg-Kesselring

I still think a top 2/3C is the biggest need. Tavares can no longer take defensive assignments against other top players. We need someone who is going to take some of the defensive duties off of Matthews but still contribute offense.

Here are some of the options:

- Charlie Coyle, takes a ton of faceoffs and has huge PK minutes. Still contributes 40ish points and can score 20 goals

- Mikael Granlund, decent defensive chops, and excellent playmaker

- Pius Suter, another guy who plays a huge role on the PK and puts up above 40 points

- William Karlsson, and trade option that could be available from Vegas. If he can stay healthy, would be a massive addition. PK, scoring, defense, winning pedigree, he brings it all

- Yanni Gourde, another great option who can contribute at both ends if healthy, similar to Karlsson, but lesser quality
Interesting list.

Surprised to see you didn’t put Ryan Donato as an option.

He is an attainable UFA C who has shown he can play with key talent on the wing with Bédard this season.

I think he’s a viable option for 2C and can be a decent fit for Nylander, dropping Tavares to 3C.

In a not so very good free agency, I can see Dontato getting the Chandler Stephenson contract from some team, 7 years, 6.25m per..

Really risky to pay anyone that after one good year in Chicago.

Suter would be my target I think. Run with Matthews - Suter - Tavares down the middle. Suter also can be bumped down to 3c, if you make an acquisition or McDavid comes home.

Not sure he has any defensive ability, and looks a lot like 1 fluke season with bedard.

We need someone who we know can handle heavy defensive usage.

Is it possible to get a bit cheeky and try to recoup some draft picks while still putting a great team on the ice?

Example sign 1-2 guys on 1 year deals and trade them at the deadline for picks and then on the other side promote some guys like Villeneuve from the Marlies who is probably close

Similar to what Dubas did by trading Sandin who turned out to be Cowan

I wonder if Treliving would revisit Bertuzzi, it was known both sides had interest in re-signing last summer but they just couldn’t make the numbers work. Then sign Bennett in free agency and I think the top six DNA is vastly different…

Bertuzzi(5.5) - Matthews(13.25) - Domi(3.75)
Knies(8) - Bennett(8.5) - Nylander(11.5)

You insulate Matthews and Nylander with players who won’t take shit and can play.

Agreed, his line should be mostly deployed in the offensive zone.

If Nylander is on Line 2 and Matthews is on Line 1 then Line 3 needs to be that shutdown line and it can’t be a line with 3 David Kampfs.
Well Matthews is such a force defensively that I think you can go head to head with any other teams top line. Knies is no slouch either.

But ideally you take pressure off of him with another good defensive line. Take off heavy PK usage etc.

Mirtle has floated this type of deal as a model for a Tavares extension. As well as other guys who are just below that 35+ age limit for league contracts, because if/when they retire there's no cap penalty like there is for older guys ( they basically already did this with Tanev last summer, whose absolutely not going to finish that contract)

Could allow us to to get Tavares below 4mil potentially. Which is awesome even if he regressed to 50-60point 3rd line C

Tavares at 6x3.5m or 6x3 would be nice work. He'd probably be an effective winger later in his career imo.

If you could pull this off and sign Knies for 8x8, would mean you'd have them for the same price as Tavares last year.

If our management is as concerned about his health, as much as you and I... he should be shipped out for the best return, while he has value. I had suggested a trade to LA Kings earlier in the year...

If Matthews isn't a top 5-10 player going forward, and we keep him... it really doesn't matter what else this team does, who we add.... we're done.

I don’t think you can turn a franchise on a dime like that and dump Matthews because it isn’t a video game and it would be massively destabilizing. Their best conservative approach would be to hope someone like me is wrong and Matthews is back to normal next year. I hope I’m wrong too.

I get that... but at the same time, you'd think he still has incredible value, it's just one bad season. Even that bad season wasn't too bad... and I'm sure and his people are saying he'll be just fine. If he's toast... well so are we, with no first for years...

Let's hope we are just wrong.
