Roster Building/Team Building/Future Trade/Drafting thread.

If this team once again fails to proceed very far in the playoffs, what would you want them to do?

are your best years behind you?
are you from the GTA?
come on down and get injured or perform like the 4th liner you now are.

Exactly.

MLSE has one of the worst sports programs. They don't know how to develop a coherent team philosophy and stick to it. Usually in top US universities they are 5 years to get down. These guys had no gains in 5 years and doubled down on it for another 5. Pathetic.

Step A will always be to study what wins championships. It hasn't been soft hockey for forever but NuHockey and Dubas was selling it. MLSE swallowed and the core is old.

The rebuild.

Tender
Defenders
Centers
And then wings.

The Leafs

The old the young
Whatever we can get
Overpay
Fail
Blame the goalie
Repeat.

Mason Appleton.

Is this player decent?
When I've watched Jets games or games we've played the Jets, he always stands out in a positive way.
Especially his speed.

Guys signing Patrick Kane or Brad Marchand (who was arguably the best player in the series that just eliminated us.) Is A LOT different than when we signed Joe Thornton and Jason Spezza. Kane was a PPG two seasons ago and had 59 points in 72 games this year.

What are we doing here

He was part of one of the better 3rd lines in the league with Lowry and Niederreiter. You have to be careful not to overpay because he's a pretty average player offensively, and his playoff performances with the Jets have been underwhelming, but he's just a very good forechecking player. He didn't PK that much for the Jets but I think he's a player that can take on that role and do well.

He'd be among my top targets to boost the bottom lines.

as good of a line I think Knies - Matthews - Kane could be. I'd probably only sign Kane if we somehow get rid of Domi.

Spending time in the Jets forum during their 1st round playoff series, they hate Appleton's guts and can't wait for him to be gone.

I do remember one of the games he had an empty net to shoot on and would have provided the go ahead goal (I think it was OT to be honest, and Winnipeg ended up losing), and he missed the net.

Jets fans sound like they are done with him and want him gone.

@weems, not sure what I said was funny.

Shared the sentiment that I read on the Jets forum about him.

I wasn't crapping on your suggestion and apologies if it came across that way. I was simply saying that it may not be a bad idea to see what the fan base that sees him the most is saying about him as a basis, unless you have watched him play regularly, which you may very well have.

I was laughing at you posting that he missed an easy goal and then they lost.

Lol, yes, it pretty much aligns with @SprDaVE assessment that he is not an offensive threat to score.

If I remember correctly, the goalie was badly out of position and all he had to do was get his shot on net and, well, that didn't happen, and after the loss the Jets forum lost their collective shit about him missing.

It could also be that maybe he's just had some good games against us and thus it distorts my view of the player.

Just saw his name listed as a UFA and remember that he's pretty fast and we should be looking at adding some speed.

Kane could be a good veteran bet, but he'll be 37 this upcoming season. He's obviously still a capable offensive player but if the goal is to shift towards a more complete team, I'm not sure he fits where we're trying to go. Maybe if he takes a league min. deal just to chase a cup, maybe you take the warts and chance to give a you a PP "expert"? I dunno. It's a tough one for me.

Agreed.

I was a bit surprised to see how Jets fans were talking about him.

I don't watch him regularly and all I really know is that whenever I pick him to score in my Tim Horton's NHL Challenge, he usually does. :)

Cheers

He's basically a mix of Lorentz and McMann. Not super physical, but gets in on the forecheck and uses his speed to create pressure and can chip in offensively here and there. 1 goal in 32 total playoff game (0 playoff goals in the last 3 playoff runs) is very rough. I'm not 100% sold on him mainly for the kind of contract he might get but I think he'd be a good bet to be at least a solid player with Laughton and McMann or whoever.

Yeah, that’s why if we got Kane, it would have to be Kane or Domi for me. Not both. Having Kane/Domi - Nylander as RW1 and RW2 means we have to add better defensive players. Having all 3? Oh boy

Not going to happen. But a player that really intrigues me is John Paterka
Always been a fan of him since his WJC days and I couldn't believe he went in 2nd round

Dont' think we have the assets or Buffalo has any interest to trade him here. But his upside is redicolous

We can't rebuild we have no draft picks.

Florida panthers have 4 players in that their teams that were drafted
Most of it was FA signings.

We have a lot of cap space, we have a lot of money all of sudden.
We can get a lot of 1 year 2 year deals with decent level quality players

In fact you can use that cap space to acquire a big contract and get some picks in return

Players get bought out all the time. We can exploit that as well

We have a solid D in our backend. Except for Rielly
We have goaltending

Get creative with some forwards.
