If that's the case, let's hope he can bounce back. He has the ability.LeBrun said there's no chance the Leafs approach Rielly for a trade. He wants to stay and Treviling/Leafs likely won't approach him. It's not a focus for them.
Benoit makes the most sense by far if Rielly isn’t moving. If Rielly does stay, then your looking at these options to change the defence.
I would assume the McCABE-TANEV pairing is a lock to return.
Trade OEL? Not that he played at a unsustainable clip but he was solid and there's some teams out there that need a quality LHD that can bring some offense and PP ability. He held his own on his weak -side but still if you want to maximize some of his offensive upside, playing him on his strong side is optimal.
Sell high on Benoit? It would be interesting to see how some teams actual value him but theres definite intangibles he brings and he's still youngish that you'd have to get back a decent asset.
Trade Carlo and sign another RHD?
I agree we need some more puck moving ability back there.
Can Fabbro play in a top 4 role alongside Rielly?
McCabe - Tanev
Rielly - Fabbro
Benoit - OEL

He also hasn't found many great fits either. Throwing out 1 year deals isn't a bad thing at all, but Reaves, Klingberg and Hakanpaa were awful and only used up valuable cap for broken players and prevented other potential moves or callups. Let's not forget the terrible Kampf contract either.
There are always gambles out there and using free agency should not be the main tool this off-season is all I'm saying.
Benoit makes the most sense by far if Rielly isn’t moving.
Of the 7 NHL D (Myers included), Tre has either signed or traded for 5 of them since he signed Benoit. He’s quickly become the last on the D corps to receive a commitment from Tre.
Also moving Benoit and moving OEL to the left makes OEL better.
Seeing Klingberg log 19 min/night for Edmonton right now, I'm starting to think that that was actually quite a clever signing with bad injury luck.
I agree Rielly should move but the reporting is out there that he won't even be asked which is unfortunate.Moving Benoit frankly makes no sense. He's 26 and the baby in the bunch, the cheapest of them all and is signed for 2 more seasons. And he's improving.
If Tre is bringing in a higher end defenseman, I have no issue with moving someone in the OEL, McCabe class. OEL is a little older so it's nice to be proactive on getting younger and more athletic.
But Rielly is the worst and he should leave on merit alone.
Klingberg was a disaster when he was here but he wasn't that bad up until that point. Tre also tried signing him this season too.

If Tre was willing to move off McCabe I doubt he'd give him a 5 year deal only 7 months ago. He is also their best LD and provides good value at 4.5M.
OEL is an interesting one. I wouldn't mind if they moved off him but he actually provided good value for 3.5M. I think it's more likely that they move off Benoit simply because he's the worse player and Tre stated he wants more puck movers, not less.
In a perfect world they move off Rielly and run McCabe/OEL-Benoit 1-3LD but we already know that's not going to happen.
I think he was playing injured the whole time with us. I don't know if Hak's career is done, but if he recovers, he's a good dman as well.
yes if Morgan some how turns it around and can be at least capable it would be a huge help, we need a puck mover in the worst way, along with a point shot, those PMD are so hard to find as wellI just don't think there are any sacred cows on the blueline and I would change up the profile a bit any which way. Benoit is cheap and has shown upside and the exact battle make up we are looking for so I wouldn't just throw him away. The other guys are good too, but I wouldn't be letting job security be a factor in improving the team.
But yeah, Rielly is the worst, his NMC is a problem and at this point everyone is just living with the inconvenience with the faint hope he'll actually go work out this summer and spend some time on his craft.
Rielly is the sacred cow unfortunately. The other 4 defenseman just logically don't make sense to move given how good McCabe-Tanev are together, the handedness of Carlo and the desire for better puck movement (OEL). Benoit is clearly the worst player of the bunch and he handicaps OEL by forcing him to play his off side.I just don't think there are any sacred cows on the blueline and I would change up the profile a bit any which way. I just don't see any changes made to the defense this off-season. Only possible player who made sense to maybe move was Reilly but according to Lebrun, that's not happening. Every single player (even Benoit) proved their worth for most of the season. We'll probably add low level depth but thats it.Rielly's more like a legally bound obligation.
I think we need guys like Benoit where we are trying to go. I would solve OEL playing on his off hand but moving OEL and slotting in Ekblad with the cap savings though.
If Ekblad were to leave Florida he's probably getting 8M+ from a team like Detroit (his hometown team) which immediately is a tough fit. That would also force Carlo down the lineup and you're stuck with a 3rd pair of Benoit-Carlo which would spend the entire game in their own zone.I think we need guys like Benoit where we are trying to go. Tre said 48 hours ago that he wants to add a puck mover on D. It's unlikely that addition will be a 7D.I just don't see any changes made to the defense this off-season. Our main turn of players is going to be on offense

Obviously he is the prize but lots of good guys could become available. Imagine adding someone like Alex Tuch to this team or Kempe.Bit of a Frankenstein plan but I think that's where we are these days, and daydreaming of 97.
Brandt Clarke somehow, please and thanks! Moves OEL back to his appropriate side.Tre said 48 hours ago that he wants to add a puck mover on D. It's unlikely that addition will be a 7D.
