Roster Building/Team Building/Future Trade/Drafting thread.

If this team once again fails to proceed very far in the playoffs, what would you want them to do?

  • Do nothing, run it back

    Votes: 17 9.2%
  • Make changes to the offense, top 6 forward, better bottom six, but keep the core

    Votes: 11 6.0%
  • Make changes to the offense, including moving core players

    Votes: 73 39.7%
  • Make changes to the defense

    Votes: 11 6.0%
  • Do a retool, including moving core players

  • Ban the guy who keeps making jinx prediction posts.

It always goes like this:
1. We get our shit pushed in in the playoffs in embarrassing fashion
2. Everyone gets mad and agrees we need change. Specific players (core) are called out
3. Summer happens. Anger wanes
4. We are running it back (running it back means keeping the core pieces)
5. I get a threadban for being too based and chadpilled on the main forum
Exactly, Leaf Nation has the attention span of a gnat and MLSE knows it…….

I've been fiddling around in puckpaedia with rosters. I've filled out two or three rosters with the same D corps, and added in a few FA and RFA forwards, and I still come out with about 3 or 4 mil leftover. And I'm not lowballing. First think I did was get rid of Kampf and Jarnkrok for a couple of bags of pucks. That freed up another almost 5 mil. Then I signed various pairs of FAs to fill the 2nd and 3rd lines. Marchand 7.2. Ehlers 6.8, Bennett 7.5, Tavares 5.5....a few other iterations. One or two of the big boys in each situation. Signed Knies at 7.5 and a few 4th liners for 1 to 1.5. Is my valuation too low for the high caliber players? I think Cowan is gonna get a spot. Myers is the 7th D. This is without even dumping Domi or Rielly.

The bittersweet aspect of Marner walking means the Leafs can fill up with better secondary/depth players instead.

Kampf is 100% gone. I could see Jarnkrok coming back if there's not much interest out there. He's a 2.1M cap hit and he's ok. Probably could bounce back after his season long injury.

Nah. If we want playoff warriors instead of regular season ride-a-longs, Jarnkrok is the first name on the "gotta go" list.

Early off-season (for us anyways) thoughts of mine:

- Dump Kampf and Jarnkrok. I don;t think these are as bad as others, but Berube wasn't much of a fan and having a 2+ million dollar player in the press box is bad management. Can probably let go for a late pick, or add a late pick if needed
- Try move Robertson (rights), guy could score 25, but probably not here, not with this coaching staff
- Marner walks unless he wants to stay for something stupid like 10 per year. While we need change, Marner at 10 is infinitely times better than Ehlers at 8 or Boeser at 7. Neither of those guys moves the needle for me.
- JT could come back as the center depth is pretty weak in Free Agency. But short term and no more than 5 million.
- Would love to move out Domi, expensive offense only player, who doesn't provide the offense in line with his wages.
- Would replace Benoit in the lineup with Villeneuve, if he isn't ready then Myers. Sell Benoit high. Also would get OEL on his natural side. William has cooked in the AHL for 3 years now, was really good this past year.
- Explore options for Reilly, albeit with keeping in mind our d transition without him will be even worse than it already is.
- Maybe unpopular, but if there was every any appetite from Nylander to move, I'd entertain it. Guy can break a series open, but when he isn't scoring, he plays a top of the circle to top of the circle game as a stick waving pylon. I think the return could also be great.
- Would like adding Fabbro, Marchand, Roslovic, Gaudette as FA options. Bennett if the term was 5 years or less and $6 million or less. Which will never happen.

Lastly, the leafs breakouts at 5x5 and PP frustrated the heck out of me this playoffs more than normal. Hate the back pass to the single guy with speed play, everyone else is standing still. We don't have Mcdavid. The breakout pass to a forward who's flat footed and facing our own net was also very ineffective. Florida stepped up on these forwards and the play died right there, sometimes with Florida coming back at us in a hurry.

I agree with all of this. Let’s see what type of turnover Tre can create

You aren't stupid at all. They all need to go, including Matthews and Nylander.

However, with no draft picks until the Sun engulfs the Earth, we have no choice but to pretend to compete until we get our picks back. You can't rebuild without picks.
Agreed, picks are needed. I know the organization doesn’t want to go through a “rebuild” or “retool.” The fans would go crazy, but you have to make serious/uncomfortable changes to this roster. You let Marner go, no question and then seriously consider the other two. If you could get something for Reilly, you look into that as well. Get w Berube and see what players he’d like to build the roster with, try to make it happen. This isn’t an overnight fix, but it could go a little quicker if done the right way.

Value might not be there. I don't think he's deadweight enough to dump with a pick or even buy out. Plenty of changes can be made for the team make up to be different. I don't disagree he should be very up the list of players to dump out though. I'm hoping Treliving can get busy with this stuff.

Knies-Matthews-Domi
Cuylle-Bennett-Guenther
Cowan-McBain-McMann
Brazeau-Laughton-Jeannot

McCabe-Carlo
Miller-Tanev
OEL-Benny

Stolarz
Woll

Cuylle/Miller for Rielly/Jarnkrok

Both RFAs, Miller has fallen out of favour in NY. Could be a reclamation project, everyone looked bad in NY last year. Cuylle, Big body, Local kid. Potted 20 last year, hits a ton.

Guenther/McBain•->Nylander

Guenther had a solid campaign last year, absolute snipe of a shot, still developing. McBain comes in to be the 3C of the future in the Lowry mold. Big, Hits, PKs, will chuck knuckles, Toronto native.

(RFA) Matthew Knies signed 7.5x7
(RFA) K’Andre Miller 6x7
(RFA) Jack McBain 4x5
(RFA) Will Cuylee 4x5

(UFA) Sam Bennett signed 8x7
(UFA) Justin Brazeau signed 1.35x3
(UFA) Tanner Jeannot signed 2x3

7.5-13.25-3.75=24.5
7.142--4=19.142
1.35-.925-4-6.275
1.5-1.35-2=4.85

54.767M on forwards.

4.51-3.49=8
4.5-6=10.5
1.35-3.5=4.85

23.35M on D

3.67
2.5

6.17M on G

84.287M Roster

Kampf-2.4
Reaves-1.35
Myers-.850

88.887M Cap

My mad scientist idea for changing the identity of the Leafs. Every line has a dude who will run you through the boards and then punch you in the mouth after. Every line has a touch of speed. Top 3 lines have multiple guys with 20 goal potential.

DNA changed.

Imagine going to the MLSE board and trying to do that?

Let's go full rebuild, will cost you 10's of millions of dollars obviously and no guarantee when we will be good again

Keen?
I don’t think you have to go to the board with anything. These events might already be set in motion.
Marner walks, I don’t think Matthews will stay beyond his 3 years left especially if Mitch is in some American City where hockey is 4th or 5th in importance and regular season fun is the most important thing.
Then Tavares will be 38 and how much has Rielly declined?
Finally, what have we accomplished during these changes?
It could be the clock ticking to start next season.

I call it the "Tank for McDavid" special:

Tuch probably isn't available but if Buffalo don't think they can re-sign him, I'm offering Easton Cowan and a prospect.

Trade Cowan + Hilldeby for Alex Tuch
Sign Marchand and Mikael Granlund in free agency for the top 9. Both guys were great in the playoffs.
Sign Lorentz and Tanev for the 4th line.

Domi - Matthews - Tuch
Knies - Granlund - Nylander
McMann - Laughton - Marchand
Lorentz - Holmberg - Tanev

Feel like Tuch, Granlund and Marchand would really change the DNA of the team. And on the 4th line Brandon Tanev brings some balls and shot blocking that is sorely lacking from Jarnkrok and Kampf.
