Roster Building/Team Building/Future Trade/Drafting thread.

If this team once again fails to proceed very far in the playoffs, what would you want them to do?

A decade ago man... like serious?

Can you please tell me anything about the circumstances? You are jumping to conclusions about something you know nothing about... with a known late blooming player. Tell me about those games... how did he look? Was he injured? What was his usage? This is some grade A, extrapolate from stats, a decade old, that you know nothing about.

McMann was 6'0 - 160lbs in the AJHL... he is 6'2" 209lbs... do you think maybe his late physical development had something to do with that?

This is comical.
Of course I’m not watching AJHL tape. I’m just looking at the history. He has underperformed in the playoffs his whole career and we just saw a continuation of that first hand. Maybe he figures it out at 29.

Jarnkrok underperformed in the playoffs a decade ago in the SHL and he’s still doing it today.

Why would Bennett sign here? He's already in a really good spot. I assume if he can make a lot more money? If that's the case, and he's leaving a tax free state, its going to take major overpayment to land him. I dont think that makes sense.

Personally I think he stays in Florida. Good team, great weather, great tax state.

But, it's been suggested (Shannon!!) that he's only interested in Toronto and Florida... so... maybe a glimmer of hope?

He's from Holland Landing.. maybe he had Leafs pyjamas? Who are we to know what other people are motivated by?

We'll know within the next month + a few days though...

I agree on the surface you'd think he would just stay in FLA but I assume it would have something to do with being a local kid and being a Leafs fan growing up.

As frustrating as this franchise can be, theres still lots of kids playing in the league from the area who idolized certain Leaf greats and thus we will always have a shot when said player reaches free agency.

History from a decade ago, when he was 160lbs. You can't make this comedy gold up.

I have a pessimist take

I can see him signing here if he won 2 straight cups, has some injuries, and can take a massive payday and phone it in for the rest of his career with our other stars

I saw this posted on twitter, so who knows if real or not.

40-51 point C... signs for $9 mil.. .ends up our 3C.... woot, woot... So Leafy.

I like the guy, but I don't see how he fits with Nylander very well.... I can see the need for a guy like Bennett, but I don't know how that works. You can't get Granlund AND Bennett, and neither Tavares nor Bennett will work very well with Nylander, but Granlund probably does.

Jarnkrok is the same story. Bunting to a lesser degree has seen a dip in production in the playoffs going back to junior. I’m sure if you look down the line of secondary guys who didn’t produce in the playoffs for Toronto it’s the same story their whole career.

Messing around at work, could see something like this for Toronto as well.. Who knows if caphits are correct.. D & goaltending untouched

Marchment for Robertson + 2nd.. then deadcap players like reaves/kampf/jankrok for nothing.

Knies (7.25m) - Matthews - P.Kane (4m)
Marchment (4.5m) - Bennett (7.5m) - Nylander
Beauviller (2.5m) - Tavares (4.5m) - Domi
McMann - Laughton - Lorentz (1m)

Have about 350k in cap left over.

Surely ancient history, in other leagues is a predictor of NHL playoff success right??? Right?

Also..

Holmberg awarded the Stefan Liv Memorial Trophy as the SHL playoff MVP with seven goals and 14 points in 14 playoff games.

He was fantastic for the Kings, especially in the playoffs. He had some dominating shifts. He's been struggling with consistency but the guy does have high end potential to be a really good offensive producer. I'd have interest.
Kuzmenko and Nylander on the same line would have you on the edge of your seat every moment you arent fighting to not throw something at the TV

69 goals in a regular season would be the best of anyone or 50 goals in 50 games.
He is in good company:

Now this is from start of season, but within 50 games.

Mercer is also 23 with a 27G/56P season. He has significantly more upside. He also scores goals in the playoffs.

I think Mercer is pretty good and definitely has more potential, probably is a better player too. NJD would be wise to keep him anyway and I don't see why they would need Woll either.

For the Leafs, removing a pretty cheap 20 goal player and a goaltender for potential doesn't seem like it fits too much what I feel would transition this into something that upgrades a part of the lineup.

Players who consistently underperform their regular season production in the playoffs generally see that continue through it their career.

No one said that you are guaranteed to be great in the NHL playoffs if you’re great in the playoffs in other leagues. Underperformance generally replicates, over performance is less linear.

NJD have a great young nucleus but don’t have a goaltender that fits that age range. Markstrom was not that good for them and he’s a pending UFA. Woll fits their window.

Florida's current lineup is 10+ mil over the current cap with Bennett and Ekblad as UFA's
they have some $$ to resign them, and fill out the roster with cheaper options, but, that would exclude them from anyone else big (not that there is many in this years UFA class, other than Marner right now).

The simply notion that an immature, 160lb kid's results from a decade ago, is a predictor, and reason to get rid of a player now, is beyond ridiculous... if you can't see that... cool. But nice spin. Moving on. Cheers.

6'0 160 lbs at 18 was probably above 50th percentile for size in that league.

I'm not saying the only reason to trade him is because he has underperformed in the playoff his whole career. I'm saying to move on from him because he probably holds the most value of all Leafs assets and moving on from him for a better player who is paid more is the best opportunity to get better.

Probably. And a big reason why this Leafs manamgent probably won't have interest. They are turning the dial into intangibles being important.

They have 16 players signed for next year, and $18,5 mil in cap space.

They have enough room to sign both, if the players don't get too greedy.

We have to get him to sign for 8 years. 8M seems like the high end for his recent production so I'm hoping it's a bit lower but at least it's in the ballpark and you finally have someone that can exceed that cap hit in a few years, if not by next year. A bridge deal just so you can sign some overpaid mediocre UFA isn't going to cut it.

Time for these players that actually want to be here show that they want to be here instead of milking every single penny over commitment.

Looking at the future Cap projections, would you sign 8*8, knowing that even with a catastrophic injury 4 * $5mm would set you up for life?

So, not a huge gamble for a life position, but if he progresses as expected, and the Cap increases as expected, next deal could be 8 * $11 - $13mm.

Fly in the ointment ... how does the health of Matthews and departure of marner impact his production?

I'd be fine with the 8 * $8mm from a Leafs fans perspective.

FWIW - John Shannon reported 2 days ago that it's not a matter of money for Bennett and there are people in Florida's front office that believe his mind is already made up that he wants to play in Toronto.

Shannon isn't that reputable but he's been around long enough that he does have contacts all around the league.

He also reported they will most likely re-sign Marchand.

He was the lightest forward on that team. But thanks for coming out, and not bothering to check before the comment.

Face palm event here man.

We won't have the cap space, to afford a player who is more productive.... McMann will be staying. I'm looking forward to him in the lineup next year, and growing as a player. Cheers.
