Roster Building/Team Building/Future Trade/Drafting thread.

If this team once again fails to proceed very far in the playoffs, what would you want them to do?

As I said above, spending money on unnecessary upgrades is a waste. We have 6 defenseman signed already. We actually need to acquire 2 centres and 2 wingers for our second and third lines.
Rielly is a massive liability on D that might get reduced to third pairing minutes this year. If you can move him or even buy him out you make that move. No cup with Rielly in the top 4.

Whats the scouting report on Durzi?

Offensive D who can play PP QB but is somewhat of a trainwreck in his own end?

Utah looks like a team that might have to move one of their RHD, especially if they want Kesselring in the top 4.

So what does trading Nylander have to do with getting a big centerman?

There's a team who'll trade a big 1st. line center for Nylander?
No, the big centermen comment was about trading Matthews, those are the last pieces that ever get traded. It doesn't make sense to trade a more valuable position for a position that's easier to get.

IE, Prime Kopitar, Etc.... for a Star winger like Nylander etc...

A hot take is, nobody with an NMC is getting traded this off-season. Willy's not going anywhere, and they probably only get rid of Rielly if they buy him out (which will probably do more harm than good). And I think expecting a trade like that to happen is setting yourself up for disappointment.

Tre is going to have his hands full trying to find buyers for Kampf/Domi with their ntcs

Seravalli confirmed what I suspected -- the Ducks are likely the top suitor for Marner. Tons of cap space to offer a top deal and a market that fits what Marner likely wants. A new coach and a team on the cusp of breaking through with a little more firepower.

This has been my prediction where he likely lands.

He will go west, will go to a market with low media viability, and likely nicer weather.

I get this logic, but how do you bring a player back who was booed whenever he touched the puck in the third period in round 2 in a game 7?
It might play a part in himself not wanting to come back.

I think the booing of any player like Marner, Matthews etc was classless, I think the entire look of game 7 from Leafs fans was classless.. Throwing beer/jerseys on the ice mid play.. I understood the frustration cause I was frustrated as well, but it's not a good look.

Marner wasn't the reason why Toronto got bombed in game 7, and to just boo him was stupid, just boo the entire team off the ice..

and then reunite with Matthews when his contract is up or Matthews gets traded there after he informs us he's not signing here.

With reports out today that Rielly won't be moved and Nelson could sign in Colorado I wonder if Colorado wants to clear space. If Toronto is moving forward with McCabe-Rielly-OEL as 1-3 LD they can in theory move off Benoit. Colorado doesn't have a 3LD.

Benoit for Colton could make sense for both sides. Maybe a small add.

Where did the Reilly report come from?

Gotcha.

Unless it was for another 1st. line center ++.

Sure Matthews might be one of the top 5 centers in the game, but

Hertl , Theodore and Trevor Connelly, Lucas Cormier
for
Matthews, Rielly and Robertson

It's May 29th and to land there already is pretty stupid to be honest.

To say we want to change the DNA and there is 5 guys that have been around for all of the failure and rule out approaching a guy like Rielly so soon is just astoundingly dumb.

Approach the player 100% and see what your options are...ruling out that as an option this fast, Christ.
The fact that they won't even consider approaching Rielly about a possible trade is everything that's wrong with this organization encapsulated in one act of chronic cowardice and institutional impotence. They are completely unwilling to experience a modicum of discomfort even if it means they could achieve the ultimate goal.

In 2017 Masai Ujiri traded away a media darling and one of the most beloved athletes in Toronto sports, pissed off his star player who refused to talk to him for the entire year, fired the reigning coach of the year, and completely remade the roster of a 1st place team with no guarantee beyond that season. The end result? His team finally got over the hump and won the NBA title.

I like this idea, was a fan of trying to acquire him last year as well.

No. Will Cuylle is not enough as the main piece for a guy coming off 3 straight 40 goal ppg+ seasons who just finished as the runner up for the Richard.
Cuylle is 23 and Knies is 22 with similar numbers and playing style. Would you trade Nylander for Knies?

Young power forwards like Knies, Tkatchuk (at the time in CGY) and Cuylle are hot commodities that would take overpayment to pry from the team.
