Roster Building/Team Building/Future Trade/Drafting thread.

If this team once again fails to proceed very far in the playoffs, what would you want them to do?

I agree Laughton is much more effective on the wing, but even as a winger certainly not worth a 1st round pick.

Was Brock Nelson or Charlie Coyle worth what they cost?

TDL is where prices get stupid, at least he was 50% and has an extra year PLUS we got a 4th and a 6th in the deal too.

Just my assumption. While Willy does have his moments where he just dominates, there's also a lot of moments as well that his effort level is minimal to say the least. While we can get away with that in the regular season, playoffs is a different ball game. Your effort level needs to be at 100% every shift and if you're really looking and changing the DNA of this team then you have to look at your core players. Your depth players are going to follow how your core when it comes to effort.

I mean, there's 0 indication the DNA comment is towards Marner and co either. It's pretty pointless to speculate on what players he means until change happens.

But let's be real here, Nylander also had some abysmal games with his effort level in the playoffs as well. How many times have you seen Nylander lay on the ice and block a shot etc... He's had good series and games in the playoffs -- But he's been apart of the problem for 9 years.
I mean lets not pretend Matthews has shown up 100% of the time either. Nylander has had off moments too but he's been a lot better than the other 3 and thats not really up for argument. Maybe he trades Matthews?

The best way to change is by moving on from the UFA core members, so I think it's likely towards them. Easy way to change. If all 4 are under contract, than it's up for debate who he changes.

LeBrun said there's no chance the Leafs approach Rielly for a trade. He wants to stay and Treviling/Leafs won't approach him.

It's May 29th and to land there already is pretty stupid to be honest.

To say we want to change the DNA and there is 5 guys that have been around for all of the failure and rule out approaching a guy like Rielly so soon is just astoundingly dumb.

Approach the player 100% and see what your options are...ruling out that as an option this fast, Christ.

It's probably something Rielly made clear in his end of season interview. I think I have some patience to let him bounce back, something I think people forget that players have off seasons. He can be a great player, but I don't disagree he had a pretty bad season. Not sure how they can add to the defense without removing Rielly though. It's crowded.

But yeah, you never close doors on that stuff. So we'll see.

Moving on from Marner and Rielly is definitely the right move here, especially for his "offensive" minded play which keeps regressing.

He cannot shoot from the point, isn't a great passer for the most part, and makes asinine dumb defensive plays that have been occurring for most of his career, this year just on another level.

I'm just really thinking about this, he's 7.5M, he isn't on the 1st PP unit anymore, he can't be trusted in tough match ups, he isn't physical....like dare I say this is a question of a buyout?

I'd rather have Rielly at that level than dead cap space until 2035. I'd give him another year, maybe 2, and go from there.

Servalli is suggesting that BUF might have to have a bit of a fire sale as a lot of their players are upset with where the team is at.

McLeod, Byram, Tuch would all be terrific fits for us I think. Maybe dangle Woll if the return makes sense.

Shannon is an idiot. No UFA would limit himself to two teams.
If you can’t win in the playoffs, what’s the sense of making the playoffs? This team needs to experience the struggle of making the playoffs, that will help them when the playoffs arrive. Breezing into the playoffs hasn’t exactly translated into playoff success has it?
With no #1 pick until 2028, making the playoffs is pretty much mandatory the next two seasons.

I would be going hard after Byram, he’s exactly what we need on the blueline. I’d be willing to move Woll + Cowan in this type of deal.

After the report from Shannon about Bennett only wanting Leafs or Panthers, if that's true, and we get him that's huge. I'm gonna guess/hope he signs 7 x 7.5, Knies 8 x 7.5, and Tavares 3 x 6.5. With hopefully Kampf and Jarnkrok gone and Cowan in the line up, we would be left with 8.7 million to spend without moving Rielly (if he refuses). Obviously more if we find a deal.

Knies - Matthews - Nylander
Domi - Bennett - Cowan
McMann - Tavares - ??????
?????? - Laughton - ??????

This plan also assumes Cowan can hang, which but be extremely advantageous to us considering his cap hit is low for 3 years. I would also assume the Leafs might want Tanev for the 4th line in the 2-2.5 range leaving about 6 for 2 more guys.

You could also potentially move Tavares to 2LW if you can get another C and have Domi and McMann be the 3RW/3LW

They need a puck moving D-man...someone who can quarterback a powerplay. With Mitch gone, and an aging OEL and one-step-behind Reilly, who else can they put out there?

Don't get me wrong, I love what they've done to improve the D, but not having that offensive D-man is a glaring hole. I guess we wait for Makar in '26 ;)

A big slow guy who takes a lot of penalties without being a physical presence. Mediocre defensively and horrific on faceoffs. Hard pass. I’d rather leave Dominat centre.
He produced well as a 2C playing with Panarin on NYR.

Has skill and a game which may work with Nylander on L2.

5M he's a bit pricy. But at 1M retention, getting a 45-50 pt player who has the ability to move up and down the lineup and not need to play PP1 to be effective is a good add.

He wouldn't be a the 2-way and physical forward addition. We could add marchment and maybe sign Bennett if a reasonable deal works out for those types of pieces

He would be a more skilled and creative player to compliment nyaldner and give good depth scoring like Domi did in the playoffs

What happens to Roberston? I assume we trade him, and I assume his value isn't very high. That being said, we don't really have any prospects knocking on the door to take a spot. So if we trade him, we need to be bringing in another forward with upside who might also need a change of scenery.

With our defense entirely locked up, it doesn't make sense to trade for a defenseman.

A third round pick or even a second really doesn't help us at all in a year where we need the help.

Any thoughts?

They need to at least have a conversation with him about his fitness. He needs to show up to come weighing less for once.
