Honestly it feels like the Marner is doing everything possible to ensure that he is absolutely loathed by this market after he moves on.

- Contentious RFA negotiations where the agents proactively seeks Offer Sheets from other teams? Check
- Chronic playoff underperformance (like everyone else on the team). Check
- Decline TDL trade to playoff contenders when you know your client Marner isn’t resigning? Check
- Intone no interest in a sign and trade so that your “beloved home-town team” can benefit in any way, even though it would be a team of Marner’s choosing? Check

Honestly, I think Marner is a good kid but his representation is going to ensure that he is vilified here. The way they have conducted business here since his RFA negotiation has been a clinic on casting their client in the worst possible light.

You can effectively negotiate without being assholes, and the manner that they’ve conducted business have soured many here on Marner, which is unfortunate.

He can move on and at this point I think it’s necessary for everyone involved, but there is no reason for Ferris and his representatives to pull dick moves at every opportunity to spite the the Leafs and this fan base.

Marner can still go anywhere he wants and sign for whatever he wants. Doing a sign and trade doesn’t stop that from happening. Refusing to do so comes across as petty spite, to be honest.

……. Which is consistent with everything related to Marner and his contract negotiations.

He came down in my eyes during the RFA bullshit, and at this point I just want to be done with him. He cost us Rantanen by refusing a trade (within his rights) and is intimating that he is good with us losing him with nothing to show for it.

I think Marner has been very well treated by the Leafs organization and it will not be reciprocated.

Good kid but made unlikeable and ultimately I think it will leave a bad taste in a lot of fans mouths and tarnish his legacy here.

I was thinking about this the other day. Names like Aki Berg and Larry Murphy were badmouthed - fairly or unfairly - for their play on the ice. Jeff Finger for the atrocious contract. Sundin - despite his Hall of Fame play and deep runs in the playoffs - was vilified for a time for not waiving at the TDL.

I mean this without the slightest hint of hyperbole. I think that Mitch will go down as the most hated Leaf of all time if he walks to FA, especially if he doesn't waive his clause at the end here. Not even asking for a sign and trade, just a signing rights trade.

Arguably should have kept Minten. He may not have a high ceiling, but we need character players like that on our roster - especially for the playoffs. This is why we cannot trade Cowan. His ceiling might not be high either but players like Bennett, Hyman, Killorn, Brown, etc - make a difference. And them starting with and growing with the team helps too.

We'll see in a few years how that went. I think he was very overrated but obviously still a good young player with a nice toolkit. To say he should have been kept over trying to win a cup is a no go though.

Being the captain of Team Canada, and being in the NHL as a 19 year old helps a lot of that. But yeah he definitely was put much higher on the podium than he probably will be.

He was overhyped because Toronto, lack of Toronto centre prospects and was a higher pick of which we have few.

He doesn't really fit the current timeline whereas Carlo did.

It's a risk in your late 20s...what if he falls off? Imagine Huberdeau went short term to cash in again? Sometimes it doesn't work out but it is his choice.

It does seem unlikely that a sign and trade is available for the Leafs with Marner though so scrap that idea.

Maybe that can look at a separate trade for someone off of Vegas because they'll need cap space if they're going after Marner anyway.

People shit on JT and his 11m cap hit, and he puts up nearly double Bennett's points per season. It's absurd people think paying 8-10m for a ONE time 50 point center and his intangibles is a good idea.

This free agency, if Toronto is paying top dollar for mediocre players -- Toronto might be in trouble.

I'd be extremely surprised. The buzzword "changing the DNA" is mostly with Marner and probably Tavares. It's the easiest way of going forward without completely nuking the team. Treliving SHOULD be very active and aggressive this summer not only just with free agents but mostly in the trading market, but Matthews and Nylander need to stick around if the goal is to keep progressing the team into a cup contender.

Is it impossible? Obviously not, but you will lose a lot of sleep hoping something so unlikely.

There is absolutely 0 indication that the DNA comment meant towards Nylander. He and Matthews are pretty much locks to remain.
Also who on this team has demonstrated what it takes to win? Aside from a couple complementry players? Why makes you think that comment refers to Nylander?
