Bennet is going to be severely overpaid and is going to have 0 physical presence on the Leafs after his first suspension

Sure, like trying him a centre, neither will work imho, Styles has all the tools, but like his core counterparts lacks the drive……..Might be worth a try
I was thinking about this the other day. Names like Aki Berg and Larry Murphy were badmouthed - fairly or unfairly - for their play on the ice. Jeff Finger for the atrocious contract. Sundin - despite his Hall of Fame play and deep runs in the playoffs - was vilified for a time for not waiving at the TDL.Honestly it feels like the Marner is doing everything possible to ensure that he is absolutely loathed by this market after he moves on.
- Contentious RFA negotiations where the agents proactively seeks Offer Sheets from other teams? Check
- Chronic playoff underperformance (like everyone else on the team). Check
- Decline TDL trade to playoff contenders when you know your client Marner isn’t resigning? Check
- Intone no interest in a sign and trade so that your “beloved home-town team” can benefit in any way, even though it would be a team of Marner’s choosing? Check
Honestly, I think Marner is a good kid but his representation is going to ensure that he is vilified here. The way they have conducted business here since his RFA negotiation has been a clinic on casting their client in the worst possible light.
You can effectively negotiate without being assholes, and the manner that they’ve conducted business have soured many here on Marner, which is unfortunate.
He can move on and at this point I think it’s necessary for everyone involved, but there is no reason for Ferris and his representatives to pull dick moves at every opportunity to spite the the Leafs and this fan base.
Marner can still go anywhere he wants and sign for whatever he wants. Doing a sign and trade doesn’t stop that from happening. Refusing to do so comes across as petty spite, to be honest.
……. Which is consistent with everything related to Marner and his contract negotiations.
He came down in my eyes during the RFA bullshit, and at this point I just want to be done with him. He cost us Rantanen by refusing a trade (within his rights) and is intimating that he is good with us losing him with nothing to show for it.
I think Marner has been very well treated by the Leafs organization and it will not be reciprocated.
Good kid but made unlikeable and ultimately I think it will leave a bad taste in a lot of fans mouths and tarnish his legacy here.
What about 40%?So the DNA is getting changed...
Marner seems like a given with where things are at and what the media is saying.
Does 1/5 of the core guys = DNA changed? Personally, I don't think so, 20% isn't change...
Rielly, Marner, JT, Matthews and 88 are the guys that have been there for the playoff losses so who could he be referring to?
What about 40%?
Arguably should have kept Minten. He may not have a high ceiling, but we need character players like that on our roster - especially for the playoffs. This is why we cannot trade Cowan. His ceiling might not be high either but players like Bennett, Hyman, Killorn, Brown, etc - make a difference. And them starting with and growing with the team helps too.

It's closer at least.
2 pts in 8GP -3 in the AHL playoffs Fraser Minten? Nice kid but bottom 6 centres are not hard to find but guys that can play #4 RD with term are...zero regrets right now, we paid market rate.
I liked Minten, I think he'll be a fine 3C in this league. But he was a case of if he weren't a Toronto prospect he'd be a dime a dozen type. The Toronto (over)hype machine is real. We'll see in a few years how that went. I think he was very overrated but obviously still a good young player with a nice toolkit. To say he should have been kept over trying to win a cup is a no go though.
He reminds me of a mix of Lazar and Stajan, the latter being the high end of the possible toolkit. That's not bad. I could be very wrong and maybe he becomes a beast. But that's the business.

First pro season, right? If he's still doing that two years from now then you're probably right.
Ok, who goes then, Rielly or Tavares? I vote Rielly as we can get an asset back and there are some top 4 LHD available in UFA.It's closer at least.

Finally, confirmation that Marner will not entertain a sign/trade and those trades for Karlsson for Marner’s rights can go away. It was never going to happen.
Even on the main boards I stated that Marner never wanted to sign long-term contracts as the most was 6 years. The cap is going up he is going to want more money earlier at his age when this new deal expires, it makes the most sense as he was always looking to get the most money.
Now the Leafs have to figure out how to plug the hole with the minimal trade capital they got or free agency.

Fans and media will be all over him very fast when he puts up his typical 50ish point production taking up over 10% of the cap. But man... 70 points in 100 playoff games... that's very impressive.
If we were to sign Bennett, I would be very tempted to have Knies attached to his hip. Knies - Bennet - Nylander would be one heck of a second line. Sign me up.Marchment-Matthews-Ehlers
Knies-Bennett-88
I feel like that 2nd line would be an absolute load to handle.

People shit on JT and his 11m cap hit, and he puts up nearly double Bennett's points per season. It's absurd people think paying 8-10m for a ONE time 50 point center and his intangibles is a good idea.Fans and media will be all over him very fast when he puts up his typical 50ish point production taking up over 10% of the cap. I wouldn't be surprised one bit if Nylander is moved this off season. Judging from Trelivings comments about DNA and what it takes to win, I can see Marner gone 100% but also Nylander.
There is absolutely 0 indication that the DNA comment meant towards Nylander. He and Matthews are pretty much locks to remain.I wouldn't be surprised one bit if Nylander is moved this off season.
