Roster Building/Team Building/Future Trade/Drafting thread.

If this team once again fails to proceed very far in the playoffs, what would you want them to do?

  • Let Marner walk (10.9M)
  • Let JT walk (11M)
  • Dump Kampf (2.4M), Reaves (1.35M), Jarkrok (2.1M) , and Robertson (875K) for picks and cap space.
  • Explore trades for Rielly
Cap space: 27.8M + 7.5M cap increase
  • Trade a 2nd for Pageau (5M). Apparently that's the price Isles fans want for him.
  • Resign Lorentz (1M x 2)
  • Sign Bennett (6.5M × 5)
  • Sign Marchand (7M x 3)
  • Sign Geekie (5M × 5)
  • Sign Provorov (5M × 5)
  • Sign Tanev (2.5 × 3)
Total: 32M

Knies - Matthews - Marchand
Bennett - Pageau - Nylander
Domi - Geekie - McMann
Laughton - Tanev - Lorentz

McCabe - Tanev
Provorov - Carlo
Benoit - OEL

Stolarz

Geekie isn’t a UFA. Otherwise, that’s a good roster.

That's fine.

But using a shot attempt against a guy who gets so much defensive usage isn't a fair appraisal.

Also, if the idea was to get someone to take defensive responsibility away from Matthews, a rookie like Quillan would not be the answer. You can put him there, but you're not getting the same kind of effectiveness, and Matthews' role remains basically the same.

So what #2 ad #3 Cs are you getting to help alleviate Matthews' defensive role?

Definitely not Kampf that's for sure. He couldn't even make his way back into the lineup for the playoffs which tells me everything I needed to know about how Berube perceives him.

As for replacements, we'll see. There are plenty of suitable and hopefully cheaper alternatives that can offer more than just faceoffs. Laughton is already here too. Matthews should and will be the guy to take almost every important faceoff. They need to find a way to start in the OZ more often to alleviate him having to be in the DZ.

I just hope the league views Kampf the same way you do. Getting a massive value back should quite easy at that point.

What's everyone opinion on Nikolaj Ehlers and Brendon Tanev?

Tanev’s like a lock to come here, right? He’s the kind of guy we need. He’s the kind of guy both Tre and Bérubé would like. His bother is here. It’s so perfect it has to happen.

Ehlers doesn’t seem like a great fit. We want to get bigger and tougher and harder to play against. We are getting better by replacing Marner with a significantly worse version of Marner.

Isn't Geekie a RFA? Per capwages is he.

I'd try to fit JT in here and push Pageau to the perfect 3spot.

And id be shocked if Bennett leaves Florida for under 7M.
You're right. Sportrac had him listed as a UFA by mistake.

Yeah, resigning Tavares if he'll sign for less than 6 million makes some sense then. If not we can go for Donato or Frederick.

I'd go up to 7M if necessary. Getting both Florida guys would both help our team and significantly weaken our rival.

If we are trading Rielly, wouldn't it be better to sign Aaron Ekblad, and have this pairing?

McCabe - Tanev
OEL - Ekblad
Benoit - Carlo

I’d love to sign Bennett, but I’m not sure he’d come here. I’ve heard he isn’t interested in playing in a big hockey market, though that’s just an unconfirmed rumor. I also think he’ll sign for closer to $8 million.

Do you think maybe Berube isn't the best judge of talent? And I said it before in this thread, actually, he was always going to play Laughton because that's who Treliving brought in.

I'm not sure what numbers or things you look for in what a bottom-six center should do, but based on what I've seen and any metrics I look to for that role, there's no way Laughton does a better job than him.

Here I'd agree; however, that's what will become more challenging, especially during playoff time. Where they will have to take them, and Kampf is still quite good at winning draws, killing penalties, and even carrying the puck.

Would disagree there.

Sure, he's not the cheapest, but he might be the best 4th line C in the league, and who are you getting to replace him with that kind play?

Florida has Nico Sturm, who's quite similar to Kampf (poss/shot #s relative to usage) and is a UFA, but he'll likely get $1.5 2M and if it's from Florida (no tax) you're in that range anyway.

If there's not such a glut of money tied up top, and it looks like there won't be, I don't see a rush to move him.

Berube healthy scratched him multiple times throughout the season and playoffs though. And he's not going anywhere

For a guy who was previously proud of his playing streak I actually expect he'll request a trade. Just seems for the best for both sides at this point

He still played 59 games; then he was injured at the end of the season. I'm not sure how he missed with that..

If he asks out, then that's a bit different. But I think they should just use him.

And, really, he only got bumped for as long as he did because they found out Laughton wasn't as good as they hoped.

It was supposed to be Laughton at 3c, Kampf still at 4c.

A few Fourth line options, discussed... happy to add players for us to look at.

Brazeau - ~ 20 points, Hits 140, well below average speed, BIG, UFA
Jeannott - 14 points, hits 200+, slightly above average speed Good size, physical, will fight, UFA
Sherwood - 40 points in 14:53 ice time, 462 hits!!!!!!! slight above average speed, Average size 6' 195lbs (trade)
Krebs - 28 points in 13:56, 136 hits.... only true C option listed, 6' 186lbs 67% skater, so brings speed to the table (trade... even Robertson might work)
Laughton - below average speed, 31 points, 178 hits. Better Winger than C... didn't gel with anyone here yet.
McBain - average skating speed, 27 points, 291, C.. could be a 3C... Big, physical, can fight... Probably not available... would be a trade.
Brandon Tanev - 22 points, 168 hits, winger, 88th percentile speed... so it would make us faster. 6' 190lbs.
What do you think Jeannot would go for in UFA?

Tanev is probably a lock to sign. Fits what Tre likes in depth forwards + brother.

I like Elhers but he won't be cheap and I wonder if it's worth getting another expensive winger. I'd rather try and get someone in the 5-8 mil range and then spend more on centres
Ehlers is a disaster in the playoffs as well.

The problem with Ehlers is which version are you gonna get? He had a very good year last year offensively, and 5 goals over 2 rounds in the playoffs. But beyond last year, his numbers are mediocre in the regular season and shit in the playoffs.

Would rather go after Boeser.

Isn't the problem he wasn't getting more minutes? Maurice started playing him more but after he was fired his ice time dropped by a lot and he hasn't averaged over 16 minutes since. Guy averages like 15 mins a game and 2 mins of that is PP time.

I think Boeser would be great but he's definitely already heading down to Minny or whatever city in the states. It doesn't feel like something that could ever happen.

Ehlers could make sense but obviously it all depends on the money. 3rd in scorer for the Jets this past season but 10th in TOI/G. There are warts in his game where he is a bit "soft" and he doesn't PK. But he's been a 25 goal scorer and 60 point producer pretty much every year, at least. He's a LW so that would boost the 2nd line tremendously with his speed and skill. He could have a Necas type of resurgence.
