If this team once again fails to proceed very far in the playoffs, what would you want them to do?

Karlsson, Roy, Korczak, Howden. Would all interest me. They probably would consider getting rid of AP or Theodore, considering Eichel is a FA next offseason as well.

Trade market! Target JG Pageau, William Karlsson, or Mika Zibanejad.

I generally like Pageau.. but we really don't have much to trade for him, and I don't see why NYI would want to move him. He's a really good 3C, below average 2C. I'd like to think we would be targeting a 2C, and moving JT down to 3C at this point.... Having said that, JT at 2C, and an above average 3C is an upgrade.

WK seems to be past his best before date, and is expensive in salary cap. Vegas will be looking to dump him.
Zbad is also declining overall in play, not good defensively, and has an $8.5 cap hit forever.

I'd inquire about Krebs for our 4C, as a young guy who could move up to 3C eventually.

I suspect that they'd try and move out Karlsson, as his production no longer justifies his cap, and they can be pretty ruthless.

Would you trade them for Brett Howden, if Marner would accept, a sign and trade deal, so they could get him for eight years?
Howden isn’t expensive enough for it to work for Vegas. Also - with what’s going on with the Hockey Canada 2018 trial and Howden this week, the Leafs probably avoid the bad PR.

Karlsson would be my target. His production was down in the regular season but his underlying defensive metrics were strong. He can anchor a defensive 3rd line or even be a strong defensive presence on a Willy line. Matthews-Tavares-Karlsson down the middle offers a good mix.

Unfortunately Korczak has a low cap hit and is most likely of this group to stay. I predict they move out Hague and replace him with Korczak and they move out Karlsson to TOR.

I'm looking at it from the perspective of who is being dropped as a winger out of the top six, to make room for Marner.... I doubt it's Stone, Barbashev or Olofsson... so Howden was next in line, though they did use him a lot on the third line as well.

But they will have to move Karlsson, so maybe it works... though he is on the decline. He is a good skater, 84th percentile, which would help with team speed. McMann/Karlsson/xxx would give teams fits with their speed. It's only two more years commitment, which isn't terrible....

Pageau would be a great C for Nylander. If the Islanders decide to rebuild, he could be available.

He had a down year, likely because he broke his foot. If he returns to 60 point form, 5.9 million is a bargain.

He could be in decline, but not necessarily. He’d be a great fit with Nylander.

He had a bad season, along with the entire rangers team. That doesn’t mean he’s declining. It could mean that, but it could also just be a bad year.

8.5 cap hit isn’t going to be much in the very near future. With the thin market, you might see guys like Bennett and Granlund hit the 7s…

He’d be another meh 3c. If we’re going to truly redistribute Marner’s money, it has to go to strong 2C and 3C.

They probably run Eichel-Hertl-Howden-Roy at C.

I think Krebs has some strong upside... he's young, played on a terrible Sabres team, with bad linemates, and still put up 26 5v5 points this year. Everyone who leaves the Sabres is better elsewhere. He's only 24, cost controlled and cheap.

A fourth line for now, of Laughton Krebs and Sherwood would be an incredibly strong 4th line. If we did go out and trade for Karlsson, extended JT to a reasonable amount... I think Matthews, Karlsson, JT and Krebs looks pretty good down the middle... at least I think Krebs is a better real C, than Laughton is, so it's an upgrade at little cost. A really good 3C puts up 0.5 PPG... not a stretch for him to get there... and if he doesn't, he's a really good 4C.

Send them Robertson for Krebs. Change of scenery for both.

9m for Ehlers? Are we on drugs? You guys want to get rid of elite talent, and then right afterwards pay a highprice for good to mediocre players..

Not to speak for anyone else but I think for 3 years, it's not that out there to overpay on money for less years attached. With that said, Ehlers seems poised to get a pretty sizable deal somewhere. Leafs likely will have some form of interest but not sure they'll go that hard on him.

I think Tavares @ 4.5m to 5m is a strong 3C for the leafs. Also think Toronto is going to go hard after Bennett.. (Which I am not a fan because he's going to be overpaid and whatnot...) What I project is something like this for Toronto. Not sure on Mantha, just see him as someone Toronto would target, bigger guy that can play north south and was injured last season so your buying low on him, before he was hurt last season put up 44pts on the capitals/golden knights.

Knies (7x7) - Matthews - Nylander

XXX - Bennett (7.25x7) - Domi

Mantha (2.5 x 1) - Tavares (5x 3) - Cowan (Toronto needs to develop him, so he provides something on his elc)

McMann - Laughton - Lortentz (1m x 2 years).

Leaves you with 5.75m to fill the 2nd line winger spot..
