If this team once again fails to proceed very far in the playoffs, what would you want them to do?

Hopefully Marner goes to the western conference but my gut says he will haunt the leafs for many years

And of course win the cup soon after leaving like Kadri did

In theory they probably could. But does Marner really wanna do that? I'd be shocked, especially for Ottawa as they aren't exactly the richest team even with the new owner.

I think Montreal might be more likely to spend top dollar to do that. Top end org with plenty to offer and an upcoming team locked up for awhile.

It really all depends what Marner will value in terms of contract, city and team. If it's all about the top dollar amount, it's going to be tough to compete.

All fair points, especially the Montreal one.

Everything Mitch has done thus far in his career suggests he will take top dollar wherever it is. I'm half expecting a Ryan Smyth type media conference where he's crying about leaving the Leafs because Utah offered him $3 a year more than Toronto.

Kadri was still on a bargain deal which allowed a much deeper lineup. Marner will demand top dollar and end up in the exact same core four situation leading to certain failure.

Montreal needs a C, more than a winger.

They definitely need a boost down the middle and on defence, but I think they are still a team likely to get very aggressive to improve their roster overall, and then make adjustments after. They could try to grab both Bennett and Marner if they make it.

I doubt Bennett becomes a FA, but I could see them going after the ones who will... Granlund will be a FA...

My bet is Marner is going to Utah - they're close to contending, they have another high pick this year through sheer luck, he's best friends with Kerfoot, Cooper is probably going to be their coach and he likes Marner, and it's a good city to raise a kid.

Dallas needs to save/cut salary, I believe they want to keep Jamie Benn (but if not, sure 1-2 years baby) and Marchment+Dumba could be the ones that get cut.

I wonder if they'd consider a McMann for Marchment base, with maybe a prospect or pick on top?

Evander Kane is another one I would consider as he only has 1 year left.

It would be pretty irresponsible for the Leafs to trade McMann for Marchment, that pick or prospect better be very good. McMann went from beloved to trade fodder really fast uh? Like I get he's struggling to producing right now but I think his value is still very high for his cap hit. Marchment isn't exactly doing much more offensively for Dallas. Maybe if we were trading Robertson for Marchment as a base, I can kind of see that in terms of cutting costs for Dallas, and Toronto gets a 1 year expensive mid line winger. Outside of that, I'm not sure why the Leafs would trade a 20 goal hard forechecking 1.3M forward.

Zero interest in Evander Kane.

Marchment had 22 goals and 47 pts in 24-25 season though?

I wouldn't mind expanding upon it, such as Robertson and McMann for Bourque and Marchment.

I wouldn't normally want Kane at term but Kane for 1 year? He brings a lot of what we could use.

And 17 points in 52 playoff games. I'm not sure it's enough to justify adding over 3M in cap hit for a marginal point boost in the regular season. If he was a center or adding an element we needed then I'd see the vision.

Kane is just a circus and expensive. We aren't exactly flush with cap space either to be adding a risky player like that.

If Dallas is looking to shed salary, wonder if something like Robertson + 2nd for Marchment would work.

He mostly seems worth it though

The 23-24 season seems like he was hurt for the run since he was out basically the entire regular season.

Would love to find a defenceman (lefty or righty) that can bring a strong offensive element to our backend (skating, shooting, passing, etc). Byram is a name that comes to mind. Buffalo is stacked with lefties (would still have Dahlin, Power and Samuelsson). Would hate to split the Stolarz - Woll tandem but given our lack of assets, think any Byram deal would have to start with Woll + Cowan going the other way. You can then go out and sign Jake Allen (connection with Berube) to backup Stolarz and hope AA or Hildeby push for a job and get some starts as well.

McCabe - Byram
Ekman Larsson - Tanev
Rielly - Carlo

Depending on how the playoffs go, you can also explore the option of trading Rielly.

Goaltending seems like it would be considered a premium asset this off-season, Woll can probably start for more than half the league.

I don't think our management group would want to trade Woll for the exact reason we're in right now, maybe if Stolarz was extended/comes back etc.

Woll for Byram 1 for 1 is maybe something they'd look at...maybe.

I think these collection of defenseman are available to varying degrees;

E.Karlsson
T.Chabot
V.Dunn
B.Byram
B.Clarke
J.Faulk

Some are more appealing than others, some require retention and some also require Rielly not being here moving forward.

I think Chicago is giving Marner as much as he wants to move if he gets to there. They got a ton of money and a bunch of blue chip prospects, they will want to add a 2-way elite level player to go with them. They have a lot to do on defense but that's how you start.

I also think teams like Utah and Seattle will be desperate to get a top UFA player like that, but Marner moving to those cities seems unlikely.

There's a logic to it for sure. But whatever they would give Mitch they'd likely be expected to give Bedard more (or risk of making his camp less than happy).

It's also a reasonably high pressure market between the fans and media there. If Mitch decides to walk, I'd imagine he ends up selecting a quieter market, which fits his personality better. Otherwise I think there would be more of an inclination just to extend in Toronto
