If this team once again fails to proceed very far in the playoffs, what would you want them to do?

If we could replace Jarnkrok with Brandon Tanev in the off season, a line of

Lorentz- Laughton- Tanev

That line would be a fan favorite and possibly best 4th line in hockey.
As it stands today that's actually our third line.

If Mitch ends up walking you probably have a decent chance of putting that together. And if Domi takes L1, Tre gets a pretty fair crack at trying to cobble together the best 3rd line in hockey as well.

But then you don't have Marner.

Drafted and signed multiple times by Treliving in Calgary. Definitely see a connection there.

I thought about him....last 2 years the production has dropped quite a bit, what is the expectation in terms of contract? It's a pay cut, gotta be.

I think maybe you go 1 or 2 years at 3M or so? He isn't playing big minutes for the Caps and he isn't a PK or physical player. I think he'd do well to give the Leafs more secondary scoring but obviously he has warts. If you lose Marner in free agency, he'd be near the top of my list of a target depending on his asking price, and obviously if he walks from the Caps.

He has some speed which is nice, I definitely want to look for ways to inject some speed into this roster.

I have to assume at this point that Kampf, Jarnkrok, Robertson and maybe Reaves/Benning are gone because we're going to need every penny.

Marner...I think they will make another attempt ahead of UFA but if 12.5M x 8 can't get it over the finish line, you did all you could.

Try to do some 1 year deals in July 1st with a guy like JT and Patty Kane and hopefully McDavid is there for us the following summer.

Would really like to reshape the bottom six this off-season and add some much needed speed.

EA mode turned on.

McMann (1.35) - Krebs (1.45) - Garland (4.95)
Lorentz (1.25) - Laughton (1.5) - Jeannot (1.85)

Would also love to make a few changes on the blueline and get some younger legs in there.

Provorov (6.5) - Carlo (3.49)
McCabe (4.51) - Tanev (4.5)
Ekman Larsson (3.5) - Korczak (1.35)

I wish the Leafs grabbed Garland when he was basically free to get. In hindsight it would have been a solid move.

Alternative to Krebs, who would be tough to acquire, I'd look at Kunin. He scores goals in a depth role and loves to get involved physically. He's a solid skater and only turning 28 this year. Not sure why he got scratched a lot by Columbus but I assume he struggled to fit. I think if he's cheap enough he'd make a hell of a tough fourth line with Lorentz and potentially Jeannot.

I haven't seen him enough to proclaim I know much about him but I have been very underwhelmed whenever I had seen him but maybe it is a thing where you need to see him for 82 games but christ, I don't see the appeal with Kunin?

You're getting him to play low end bottom line minutes. He killed penalties with San Jose and he's physical. 10 goals+ every season since 2018 (or on pace of). He struggled on a bad team in terms of 5 on 5 shot differential but on a better supported team I think he can do better.

Provorov might be the most fit player in the league. He's got a fleet of personal trainers for running, swimming, biking, etc. I think he's only missed three games in his career due to covid protocol - not sure if it was up to him.

It would be cool to bring him into the fold, but if we're replacing Rielly, and cleaning up all his faults, we might need someone with more offensive/transition umph to support basically the entire d corps.

Krebs and Garland would add some speed and skill, but that really isn’t Treliving’s style. He’s much more likely to add grittier and bigger players.

I think Brandon Tanev is basically an automatic addition to our bottom 6.

If we’re looking to replace Rielly with younger legs, the target is Bowen Byram. That’s the piece that makes the most sense for Buffalo to move, but I’m not sure what we’d have to offer….
