If this team once again fails to proceed very far in the playoffs, what would you want them to do?

To suggest Tavares, who I think we can all agree is a consumate professional, is playing solely for his next contract, is an absurd take. He has just made $77 million USD. Does he need one more big payday to buy his second Caribbean island?
Tavares is about the crest on the front as anyone on this team.

He will be extended and I think he will be a very team friendly contract.

He wants to be here and he gets it.

I have noticed consistently players have their best year before a contract. It is an absurd take to say differently since most pro athletes are motivated by $$$. Show me the money! Was also in a movie featuring Tom Cruise. And how about Marner? Stop pretending to be naive.

Well, I can't argue with a Tom Cruise reference.

I personally hope so.

I can’t help but remember the same calculus with Zach Hyman.

Ni guarantees, but Hyman was a 29 year old UFA looking for his retirement contract.

Tavares is 35 at the start of next season with a family looking to stay close to family.

I don’t think you are comparing apples to apples here.

Marner puts up the most consistent numbers of any top player. Maybe you’re thinking of Nylander?

Next season:

Knies Matthews Marner
McMann Tavares Nylander
Robertson Holmberg Cowan
Lorentz Laughton Tanev

I missed Iafallo getting 3.7 x 3. Averaged 13 goals, 29 points over the last two seasons. Solid two way guy, turning 32 in December, no standout size, skill or physicality.

I don't think Jarncrok @ 2.1 or Laughton @1.5 are going anywhere.

One way or another, Tre needs to find a new home for Jarnkork (1yr left @ $2,100,000) & Kampf (2yrs left @ $2,400,000). Laughton does everything Kampf does + with a lot more toughness + offence.
$2,400,000)

Let's say this team goes on a run and we want to run it back. We can do that, but only if we move out Kampf and Jarnkrok (Domi too, but I think he is harder to move)

Knies (8) Matthews Marner (13.5)
Holmberg (1.25) Tavares (5) Nylander
McMann Domi Robertson (1.25)
Lorentz (1) Laughton XXX (.8)

McCabe Tanev
Reilly Carlo
Benoit OEL
Myers

Stolarz
Woll

That team is under the cap with the Paccioretty bonus. Tavares gives us that number on a five year deal (the Tanev plan).
We still have Cowan, Danford, Akhtyamov, Hildeby, and Quillan knocking at the door.

If this team doesn't deserve to be brought back we have $18.5M to spend to replace Marner and Tavares. Not a bad position to be in.

Has anyone done a cap projection for next years team with Marner, Knies and Tavares singed ? (Projected numbers of course)

I think they'll opt to keep Laughton regardless. Tre didn't spend a 1st to acknowledge a mistake so soon after.

A Kampf sitting as 13th forward is a priority move. Jarncrok is not.

A return to Chicago for the rights to Domenic James and a mid pick. They get some stability, we get some futures thry wont miss
If they want to move Kampf they'll find a taker at the draft for free. There's always a coach/GM looking for a centre.

Tre has to actually want to move on. But Berube doesn't seem to be the biggest fan, so he may very well go this time

A defensive minded veteran centre that wins over 50% on the dot and pks will have some value. It will probably only be a late pick, but I can’t see Kampf wanting to stay and be a healthy scratch, so I can see him waiving.

That's what Dallas did with Faksa. Gave him away for free. I'd expect more or less the same. Kampf is a little cheaper so perhaps a late pick can be attained.

I put Marner at 12.5M, Knies at 5M on a 3-4 year deal, JT on the rumored 7M 3 years extension. You can bump up Knies and/or remove some from JT/Marner but at the end of the day, it's about 25M or so for all 3 I think. Anything lower than that, especially if they differ a ton from the JT deal, then it's all gravy.

Dumping Kampf, it leaves the Leafs with about 2.5M in cap space to sign (or call up) at least 2 forwards for a 21 player roster. Probably 4 players to reach the ideal 23 player roster. Leafs already have their top 7D and their top 2 goaltenders locked up. The 2 RFAs of "importance" are Robertson, who likely could be traded, and Holmberg who likely will be pretty cheap to keep.

They can create more cap space by dumping Jarnkrok and waiving/burying Reaves. I don't see them trading Rielly or Domi.

Jarnkrok is still high on the players to cut if cap space needs to be made. If Marner walks and signs elsewhere, then I'd probably agree that he should stay.
It seemed to me that in game 1 Berube was using Lorentz-Laughton-Jarncrok as more of a shutdown 3rd line than a filler 4th line. If that continues then you find somewhere other than dependable vet 3rd liners signed way below market to cut cap.

Your 2.4 million dollar 13th forward is an easy one.
Your 3.75million dollar 4C that needs to be sheltered is probably next.
As much as I like Benoit the 1.35m 6-7D is probably next, and then only because we have Myers in house.

If we're trying to compete while trimming cap, the key is to cut from places where going cheaper and presumably worse/unproven won't hurt as much.

It's not 2022 anymore, I doubt we're going to see a slew of good young players non-tendered because teams can't afford a 3million dollar arbitration award, or a basket of good proven bottom 6er's willing to take sub 2million dollar deals just to make sure they have a chair when the music stops. Maybe Tre can pull a rabbit out of his hat, but in my opinion the assumption moving forward should be that any UFA player you can sign for elc money will be someone we don't want on our healthy 20 man roster.

There are many ways of trimming the cap for sure and maybe that's explored depending on what happens this April and May. I just don't think Jarnkrok is nearly as important or seen as highly as any of the other players you mentioned other than Kampf, who is obviously gone this summer.
