If this team once again fails to proceed very far in the playoffs, what would you want them to do?

I think we also underestimate the ability for a player to bounce back. Many people were done with JT last year and he's been very good this year.

Rielly will never be a defensive powerhouse so I think people that want that will always complain. He just needs to be better in terms of offense and creating offense. Even in a bad year he's by far our better point producer.
Even at his peak Rielly is not a cup champ number 1.

As a guide, I would be much more inclined to keep Knies, keep Tavares and keep Marner and letting Reilly be the offset in the calculus.

Bobby Mac says Marner is going to July 1

I think we're at the point where you have to plan for Marner not coming back, if he does fine but you can't build thinking that's what's going to happen

I'd resign Knies long term and bring back Tavares so I can have out top 2 lines of

Knies Matthew's Domi
McMann Tavares Nylander

Now I'm spending the Marner money to sort out the bottom 6, I'd bring back Lorenz and also get Gourde as a UFA, he's gone to Tampa and he's scoring at .7 a game, that's production you can build around

Jarnkrok Gourde Robertson/Cowan
Lorenz Laughton Holmberg

I think there's enough money if you want to resign Robertson, or just trade him and blood Cowan instead
I also think you would have enough money to add a better 3rd line LW and 3rd pair RD if you were looking to upgrade

If we can’t get Bennett for a reasonable price. Then I think I want us to overpay for 1 year and hope we can get a better player the next year. Better crop of ufas. I guess I wouldn’t mind Ehlers? But

What about 2 of kane/benn/duchene for 1 year

Knies. Matthews. Kane
Benn. Tavares Nylander
Laught Domi. Mcmann
???

I doubt you would have enough money for two guys and I'm pretty meh on Ehlers, I'd take him but I wouldn't overpay to get him

My thought was Domi is a playmaking pass first righty, he's a poor man's Marner but I think that line would still function

I wouldn't mind a midfle 6 LW and C upgrade though

Mirtle, Jonas and CJ have all been saying that too.

To be fair, it doesn't mean an extension is out of the question, but looks like he's at least going to listen to offers.

Tavares did that and left the Islanders. Stamkos did the same in '16 and ended up staying in Tampa. What Mitch does is anyone's guess at this point. Though if I'm Tre I'm making aggressive offers to plan B as soon as possible, can't miss out on guys waiting for a decision

I don’t think they ever said July 1.
I think they said they would negotiate after they are done the playoffs.

July 1 is a very important distinction.
There is no negotiating period anymore. I’m sure he can get An idea. But he already has that.

It will be every interesting if Marner really wants to go full heel and give up his spot on legends row.

A good post-season and the team going far/winning would make things a lot easier all around I think.

Was pretty clear Marner was going to free agency when the Leafs tried to get Rantanen.

I guess Marner might not be interested in an 8 year deal. Maybe a 3/4 year deal at 14+ mill aav from a team like Chicago will be on the table for him.

They were offered Rantanan, they didn't try and get him.

They did try to get him. For minten, Cowan and 2 firsts.

That was a Kypreos rumour.... it really depends on whether you believe that or not.

On the other hand, Friedman said the following...

The Hurricanes had wanted Mitch Marner, the Leafs did NOT offer him. The Leafs had went to Marner and said that their priority was to sign him but Carolina was calling about him.

Marner was not willing to waive his trade clause because he wants to remain with the Maple Leafs.

Could we do do 2 big 1 year deals for JT and Duchene? like 5.5-7M range ? Ideally buy time and go for McDavid.

I could see both wanting 3 years. Leafs could potentially do the Tanev with both as well.

I'm definitely not going near 7M AAV on a 3 year deal with JT, like 4.5M maybe but front load it.

Age is undefeated and the skating is choppy as it is.

Sports leagues keep tampering under cover. It happens everywhere. The second Marner leaves don’t be shocked if the Leafs have a deal in place with Bennett. Leafs aren’t going to go into this summer completely blind sided and with no contingency plan.

Also what Bobby Mac said is pretty obvious lol everybody knew Marner was going to July 1 the second the Leafs tried to trade him for Rantanen.

if we dont resign Marner, I'd want to use that $$ and take a run at Ekblad ...strengthen us and weaken Fla at the same time. Perbix may be a much lower budget target option though, with Poink being another solid (better overall) option, but, at only 6' tall, the new management may consider him too small lol

No chance on Ekblad, RD is solidified with Carlo and Tanev right now, best thing to do is trying to find a younger RD for 3rd pairing and hopefully they can develop more.

You need to try to acquire Schneider, Nemec or Korczak.

Dude, the Leafs went to him and asked if he was interested. Pretty sure if he said he was okay with it, they would've traded him. They don't approach the question at all unless they are willing to do it.

They may need to find someone with high upside on Offence as well. Clarke, etc. We have really good stay at home guys, but probably only 1 1/2 above average puck movers in OEL/Rielly

Yeah, if Rielly were to have a poor post season showing he might also be out.

I'd certainly have interest in Clarke too.

Korczak's price is likely the most reasonable of the external options.
