If this team once again fails to proceed very far in the playoffs, what would you want them to do?

Maybe. He may also consider it due to not wanting to relocate - and can get a sizable payout again when he is 31/32
No way he does that. Going through all this drama just to kick the can 3-4 years down the road just to go through this again doesn’t make sense. He’s not going to do short term lol he’s going to get paid and paid long term. I’ll eat my shoes if he signs a 3 or 4 year deal and I’ll post pics

I'm not so sure long term is as appealing as it was just a couple years ago.

Cap is set to skyrocket.

$12M next year is $14.5M a couple years after.

Agreed. I just don’t see how that works.

With 26 million to spend.

13 for Marner.
6 for JT.
Then 7 for knies? Maybe I guess? But seems light if he gets to 30 goals.

I think Knies will be in the 7-7.9; conversation if they want.8 years. Try and hold firm.on Marner, give JT salary deferral to get it down as much as possible and then a combination of Kampf, Jarnkrok, Domi all potentially get replaced as needed with cheaper options

If Marner walks Domi isn't a bad replacement on Matthew's RW, he's not Marner but he will pass the puck which suits Matthew's

If Knies is willing to sign for 8 years I'd be willing to give him what Brady got in Ottawa, with the cap rising he'd have to fall into a hole not to be worth that contract in a few years time

So keep doing what we’ve been doing for the last decade?

If there is one thing tre knows how to do it's create a really strong blueline. Carlo has been a great partner for Rielly. The one thing I think Rielly needs to do this off season is try and lose 10-15 pounds to get faster again.
Marner isn't signing here, writing is on the wall but we should probably look to have enough cap space for the year after with an amazing free agent class available.

I mentioned it before but I would go hard after Boeser if Marner goes elsewhere. The C options aren’t the best. So may have to bring back JT as a stop gap

I don't really care that much about extending JT. He's likely a better option than other free agent centres. It depends on how they would try to replace him.

My main priority this off-season for the team is a Knies extension, which I don't think is all that relevant to the previous decade.

Marner comes down to contract and likely how the playoffs go.

Knies is the priority signing this offseason it would have been better to do it last summer.
He knows he is going to be a leaf for life and as long as Mathews is hera he will be playing with him.
To give us more room to play with the cap maybe a 2 yr bridge @ 6 mil setting him up for a 8 yr @ 9 Milind 2 yrs.
JT if he truly want to win a cup and stay in tor sign him for 21 mil over 5 yrs
Marner if he doesn't wilt in the playoffs give him 8 yrs @ 12.5 mil.

Our defense and goaltending are solid

If we need to trade for a top 6 center pick one of our tenders as a trade chip .

Trade
Kampf, Jamcrok, Laughton ( if he doesn't fit in )
Robertson
Stolarz only because Woll is younger and on a cheaf deal

Assets for a top 6 center even if JT signs

We need to get control of our cap to have more than 2 lines

Agreed.

I also get confused when the fanbase keeps criticizing the GM for continually trading for Ristolainen. Brad knows what a good d unit looks like and yet the fanbase keeps accusing him of trading for Risto.

I'd consider Patrick Kane on a one year deal stop gap. He still plays the game at a pretty high level, and would probably look good beside Matthews. Plus, a one year deal would give us plenty of options for the good crop of UFA's the year after....

My thought process so to speak, is if Marner doesn't come extend. Knies contract should be the ceiling AAV for forwards we add. Nylander/Matthews are their own group.

Let's say Knies gets 8m on 8 years. No forward should be making more than 8m. (This may sound stupid) Obviously there's exceptions like a McDavid coming to Toronto or something.

I'd go 8x8 on Knies but I would prefer to go 6x6.

Alex Tuch contract puts him at 5.45M x 7 years but we never get good deals, bump up the AAV and trim a year off.

I guess it would be 7x7 if we wanted 7 years?

Interesting what we do for the 2nd line C option

Tavares at reduced rate? I don't see anything good out there.

Where do you think he might sign? Vancouver?
I think he'd go somewhere south where there is less tax and low media presence. He really really hates the media and news surrounding the team and can't handle it, and often goes out of his way to create a 'you vs us' narrative with them.

Wow, who other then the main boards menace, 1specter!

That sounds fairly accurate tbh, I appreciate the response

I think he’s gonna sign in Washington. They have cap space, they are at the top of the standings, lower taxes, not too far from home but far enough that the weathers a bit better, lower taxes, less pressure and you don’t have to deal with quite as much bullshit. My prediction is Washington trades a pick for his rights and signs him to an 8 year 13.5 million deal.

I thought that was a landing spot right until they signed Chychrun, trading out Milano for a pick and still...
