If this team once again fails to proceed very far in the playoffs, what would you want them to do?

Ryan Donato with a hat trick last night against a very good Vegas team.

Would have loved to spend the assets wasted on Laughton for that guy, if he was available.

That’s a guy you could overpay for……. :(

Is this a good place to say how jealous I am of how Washington is putting itself together?

So many smart moves and drafting.

Adding Dylan Strome, Chychrun and Matt Roy to give their defence a huge boost, drafting both of the Protas brothers, with Ilya looking like he’s going to be an impact NHL player.

That is just a really smart and disciplined team build that is already paying dividends and is going to have them contending for years to come.

Smart trades, good scouting, and not handcuffed to an overpaid core 4 that hasn’t delivered anything yet are treated like they are and catered to.

Washington is just a smart team and who I would be looking at as a model franchise to emulate.

Nothing ground breaking, but interesting but about JT.

Also I'm pretty sure Mirtle had said a little while ago there was potential talks about extending Lorentz during the season, so curious if theres a particular reason for the wait

This only makes sense if Tavares wants a fair market contract.

He can get $7mm * X easily.

If he was taking a deep team discount they could sign him and have enough for marner's overpay.

So ask yourself, is $8mm (over the term) motivation enough to move your family?

In two cases buy low
Strome and the Chychrun trade
We also had a chance to sign Strome years ago.
Also Washington could make these moves not going all in every year.
Yes smart drafting but having picks to do so.
2019
McMichael
Protas
2020
Lapierre
2023
Leonard will be playing next yr
2024
Cole Hutson

They also have a stacked farm.

Both Leonard and Hutson look like prospects that will be good NHL players.

Chychrun is the one I regret not going for. Would have had to have been from Arizona though, no chance Ottawa moves him here.

Career year and you absolutely need to give him top 6 ice time for him to translate.

He's been put at wing or 3C etc in other teams and it does not work.

Yes and he is also 4th on the Hawks for draws taken at 45% so not getting that much use at C. As a pure rental Nelson would have been a much better choice. But its fine. Laughton is just saving his offense for the playoffs

I would put him at 2C, resign Tavares and let JT absolutely feast on lesser competition.

I think we will be pleasantly surprised with what JT reups with us for. He wants to be here, he’s in his hometown and highly competitive team, and he’s already made a butt-load of money. I think he will take term instead of annual salary.

Unlike some teammates , Tavares gets the concept or a salary cap and needing to spread it around for competitive depth across the team.

I think with the talent we have, Donato and Tavares could slide back and forth at 2/3 C as needed.

I think another team probably outbids us for Donato and the concern also is...what if this year was a mirage?

I would look at it like if he’s doing this with the talent that Chicago has, what could he do with our talent, and a chance to face weaker competition?

I've seen it go both ways, no defensive responsibility or they're cheating for points OR they do come to a good team and get better.

You'd never know unless you got him.

What would you pay him? I struggle with the idea of having both Donato and Domi, a little too similar besides Domi willing to fight once in a while.

Interesting you cite Domi, as his contract is the one I would look at as a comparable.

Say 3-4 years at $4m? I think that could turn into a very good signing if Donato’s improvement is for real.

All indications that they are, and that he made significant adjustments in the offseason that would have one believe that while the shooting percentage isn’t realistic, the work ethic will continue to.

Most likely resigns with Chicago, but he’s the kind of Center I would have looked at with the assets used for Laughton, admittedly knowing that Donato is a UFA.

I just couldn’t see the Leafs making that trade without knowing they could extend Donato first.

Cheers
