Moving away from Laughton for a moment...I have to assume that Kampf is gone this summer. The return is likely a 5th-7th round pick range but it seems done, I don't think Berube cares for Kampf.

I think they can recoup that 1st they gave up. They just need to be creative

Sign 1-2 guys on 1 year deals and trade them at the deadline next year while also promoting someone deserving for the spring run at the same time. Example could be Webber (if he’s ready)

Trading Matthews wouldn't necessarily be blowing it up, it would be re-tooling.

There is a less than zero chance of this happening. The Leafs aren't going to trade Matthews.

In my scenario, we’d add a top 3 in OHL scoring 2024 drafted player, two firsts and three other picks. From that perspective we’d easily get back what we already dumped. Plus, I’m not suggesting a rebuild, rather an aggressive retool.

If this group isn’t going to work, they need to find something that does. Everyone may have different opinions as to who might need to go, and how to fix things.

All I can say is that, if things go south, and Matthews is the target for a trade, we 100% need a good centre prospect, or a young centre, coming back. Replacing 1C's is a nightmare.

The Cap hit for this is $91,122,065, so if I've underpaid anyone, we have plenty of cap room. It's radical.. .I know, but if we fail again, it's time for a change. Matthews is injured too often to be counted on, LA is a great destination for him, with attractive assets. Marner hasn't been a playoff guy, so we move on... and Rielly, well it's just time to change things up.

Greentree might not be a guy some of you know. 6'3" 216lb RW, drafted 26th OA by LA in 2024. In 64 games for the Spitfires, he has 49 goals and 119 points this year. Between him and Cowan, you've got a future top six RW there for sure... and in the future Nylander/Greentree/Cowan on the RW could be pretty strong, and the last two play with some grit.

Is this realistic... of course not, but we are just guys/gals(?) having fun talking about our team. I'm not sure the team is much better, but then, I'm tired of the same results, and these guys are about as good as I think we could get, given who I expect to make it to UFA. (Meaning I expect Bennett and Chychrun to extend with their current teams).

Exactly, but unless he's going to Edmonton or Colorado he's probably the best forward at the destination, so I don't have any doubt the other team would be willing to pay the price.

Being conservative in the cap numbers, by giving slightly larger contracts than I'd actually expect. I'm not going to quibble over what the numbers will actually be.

AFP Analytics has the following numbers for Knies... 2 × $3,958,247.62 (4.14% of the cap)
or 6 × $6,625,312.50 (6.94% of the cap)

Those are pretty divergent cap hits... obviously the second buys a lot more time... and if you were in a blow up scenario, it's pretty attractive, as you can afford it. A two year, likely sets him up for a bigger contract down the road.

Who knows what the real number will be.

I think if Matthews were traded, LA, Dallas and Vegas would be the top three destinations he’d waive for. I think he’d want to join a contending team in the USA more out west. Dallas would be my top choice given Johnston would have to be part of the package returning to Toronto.

I'd offer him to Dallas along with whatever is needed to get Hintz, Johnson and Harley back. I doubt Dallas entertains that deal unless they are punted in round #1.

Yeah not sure you’d be able to get all 3 of those pieces even for Matthews. I’d definitely be open to something around Matthews for Johnston + Harley though.

Johnson and Harley would be quite the haul. Idk if Dallas can take Rielly back but I feel you have to move him 100% in this scenario.

You are assuming that models look at one year worth of production... they don't. Neither do most GM's, or you end up with Clarkson like contracts, where players drop off. I'm not suggesting Protas is a one hit wonder, but you never know.

Knies has 80 points after 146 games.
Protas had 53 points after 169 games.

Of course at 24 years of age, Protas has this one season, where he's taken off... Knies is 22.... what is he going to produce in two years? At 22, Protas put up 15 points on the season, Knies is at 44.

Yes, Protas is having an excellent season, with the 59 points... but there is more to negotiations than that.

We're famous now for our overpays, but I think this one goes the same way for any team.

Knies brings more certainty and upside given his development and age - there are somewhat established payouts for this situation and they are higher than what Protas got.

The Protas contract was the tricky one as both parties were hedging against a wider spectrum of outcomes. That contract probably could have ended up quite different from one team to the next. Maybe he got shortchanged.
