Since the trade deadline, we haven't had a future Roster Building thread, to talk about what our opinions are, on how we would personally build the team in the offseason.

This is your opportunity to talk about what you would like to see happen in the offseason, whom you might resign, who you let go, and what trades you might make to reshape the Leafs. This can include players, or management... what you would like to see done.

By the way, CapWages now has a utility, that allows you to build a team for future years.

They need to find a way to move on from Rielly. At 30 years old he’s only going to decline from here. Hopefully he’s decent in the playoffs and sell on a high note. I know he has a no move clause so there needs to be a discussion that it’s best for both parties to move on and he may benefit from a change of scenery

Moving out Rielly and going after a player like Provorov and another 4-5th dman shuffles the deck back there. There is not much else available but they need to get really good at allowing assets to thrive in a new environment like Tampa and Florida have

Ekblad will be overpaid so maybe not an option.

I’d rather have Bennett if at all reasonable on his contract

But 100% Rielly needs to go asap

Just did some digging in capfriendly

Two UFAs that might be worth looking at further

Pionk from the Jets has nearly 40 pts this year

Gavrikov from the Kings
- Vladislav Gavrikov | 2yrs x 5.875M (LAK)

If Chychrun is somehow there for us July 1st and Rielly was shipped out, that would be a huge boost to the PP, his shot is going to draw penalty killers into that lane, opening up Nylander and Matthews.

Would love Chychrun, but he's got to be sick of moving around. He's found a great spot in Washington.

I think, given what's out there, Provorov is our best bet for FA. Brings you 30 points and puck-moving skills at, most likely, a slightly lower price than Rielly. He's also younger and still playing well.

What is he gonna pull? 6M?

Gavrikov is another interesting guy but more defensive.

Here is my burn it to the ground scenario.... the team doesn't make it past the first round.

Trade 1.

Matthews to LA Kings
for
Byfield
Clarke
Greentree
2025 1st

Rielly to Vancouver Canucks
for
Sherwood
2025 1st

Kampf, Domi, Jarnkrok traded away for... whatever picks we could get.

Signed as RFA
Knies 3 x $5.5 mil
Holmberg 1 x $900k

Signed as UFA
Granlund 6 x $6,000,000
Tavares 4 x $6,000,000
Provorov 6 x $7,500,000
Ehlers 6 x $7,515,850
Boeser 6 x $7,500,000
Steeves 1 x $900k
Lorentz 2 x $900k

Knies Granlund Nylander
Ehlers Byfield Boeser
McMann Tavares Cowan/Steeves/Greentree
Lorentz Laughton Sherwood
Holmberg

Provorov Carlo
McCabe Tanev
OEL Clarke
Benoit

Stolarz
Woll

The Cap hit for this is $91,122,065, so if I've underpaid anyone, we have plenty of cap room. It's radical.. .I know, but if we fail again, it's time for a change. Matthews is injured too often to be counted on, LA is a great destination for him, with attractive assets. Marner hasn't been a playoff guy, so we move on... and Rielly, well it's just time to change things up.

Greentree might not be a guy some of you know. 6'3" 216lb RW, drafted 26th OA by LA in 2024. In 64 games for the Spitfires, he has 49 goals and 119 points this year. Between him and Cowan, you've got a future top six RW there for sure... and in the future Nylander/Greentree/Cowan on the RW could be pretty strong, and the last two play with some grit.

Is this realistic... of course not, but we are just guys/gals(?) having fun talking about our team. I'm not sure the team is much better, but then, I'm tired of the same results, and these guys are about as good as I think we could get, given who I expect to make it to UFA. (Meaning I expect Bennett and Chychrun to extend with their current teams).

I would let Mo go for the Sherwood alone so long as no retention.

The Rielly to Vancouver idea kinda died IMO, they have Hughes and Pettersson locked in at LD now.

I've been playing with the idea of Calgary as the landing spot since BC/AB are very close in vicinity and Calgary actually has some need for LD.

Do you think they'd do Coleman for Rielly? If not, Farabee?

Don't mind the trades, but my concern is with Byfield. Isn't he not at C anymore? Maybe I'm wrong.

If this ever happens you just blow it up and start over. That looks terrible and with no picks/prospects we would be in the worst possible position.

I get what you are saying. I added one Prospect who is third in the OHL is scoring from the 2024 draft year, two 2025 1st round picks, and three other 2025 picks of lesser quality. So, I think I addressed some of that.

Who knows how the team would actually perform... it lacks some of the star quality for sure, though it's much deeper. I doubt that the Leafs would actually do a complete blow up, rebuild and start over, they'd want to compete. Others might choose a different offseason blowup, and that's cool... feel free to post what you'd do.

Seattle could be a possible destination as well... very close to BC. Could use more offense from their backend.

I'm not sure what Calgary would go for... with the Vancouver trade, I just went with a fourth liner, and a pick. I'm happy to take a decent pick, or prospect.... I think Rielly has value, unlike some others, but I don't need a huge return.

They all went on vacation at the same time.

If only they weren't so highly paid, they would have stayed around to make more $$$.

That explains all the chaos... LOL

BTW, why don't any of the menu items work? The Bold, Italic, etc at the top of a post.

First thing they do if they fall completely on their faces again and again and again (okay been there done that), is ask Matthews if he'd like to leave or wants to stay and target all time Leaf records.

If he wants to move, you find out where.

He would be the best player on probably 29 of the 31 teams he isn't currently on.

Team who gets the best player wins the trade, but not necessarily the prize.

Everything else is secondary.

I'd be fine with marner being re-signed as Batman always needs a Robin. And the goal would be to get their next Batman with the Matthews trade.

If the most recent report I read was accurate, Tavares 2*$5 is perfectly fine.
