If this team once again fails to proceed very far in the playoffs, what would you want them to do?

I mean the simple option is to make our team deeper. Florida stars have never really outperformed ares. Barkov/Tkachuk/Reinhart were non existent in our series. We just get a no show from core 4 (soon to be core 3) while Florida has 3rd and 4th lines show up.

Florida has three first lines this year, no other team can really measure up to that. On paper, Dallas maybe the closest but they had their issues. We'll have no choice but to get deeper if Marner's gone.

Matthews should never have been the captain. A good assistant perhaps. The wrong guy is captain. He’s like Malkin. Not captain material but a top guy who has talent.

Marner should have been a Crosby type and could have been the captain but he’s nothing close to that.

I'd prefer Suter or possibly Donato via free agency, but a trade option where I'd make Carlo and McCabe, or pretty much whatever is needed, bar Knies to get another C.

I don't think either of those guys is a 2nd line C. They're both coming off career seasons, but normally they're both 30-35 point guys, so you'd be replacing an 70+ point C who wins draws with a 30ish point guy who does not.

I'm not sure what team out there is trading you a good 2nd line C for a good 2nd pair dman tbh.

Depends on how much PP time you give them, which is the same case for JT, who is likely a 40 point player himself if he were on the 2nd unit or not at all.

But also, it's about change.

JT still had 26 goals and 28 apples at even strength last year.

If we're changing, it has to be to get better. Bringing in inferior players who don't make us grittier or faster or more skilled is the bad kind of change we should try to avoid.

Why do you prefer those 2 over JT? Both are 29 year olds with little history of being productive

Suter is a lot faster than Tavares, and of his 46 points, 41 were at even strength or PK.

Stick him with Matthews, Nylander, and Knies on PP and see what happens. It's the best option to actually change something for next season, while also keeping a C spot open in case someone becomes available next summer.

Marchand has to be the #1 target imo. He's a culture changer in the same way Tanev is on the defensive side. Too bad they're both so old.

Sign Marchand
Sign Kane
Trade for Pageau

Knies - Matthews - Kane
Marchand - Pageau - Nylander

Suter isn't faster? Everytime I've seen him skating speed wasn't part of his good attributes. He's alright but nowhere near the level of JT in terms of producing or skill level. He probably should be a target to elevate our depth but definitely not to replace JT.

EDIT: This supports it.

I don't hate the idea of Suter. If Marner's gone and we're able to sign Ehlers, then a line of Ehlers-Suter-Nylander actually sounds pretty good on paper.

...but we'd still be short a middle-six centre, and if the rumoured asking price from JT (5m) is true, you're not getting a better deal than that. JT always excelled playing with grinders on the Island, I bet we can put together a real interesting 3rd line with him down the middle in that scenario.

That's worse than I thought.

Still, no to Tavares, move on.

Alright well they are definitely going to sign him either way, probably because he's still very good at what he does. Changing a lot of the team will come from other areas, and Marner likely walking means a huge change already. We'll see how it looks in a few weeks, and we can go from there.

Buzzword of the summer that is going to be over analyzed to fit personal narratives. If Marner would sign for league minimum, you'd probably still sign him, right? Right. A lot of change coming from your 2nd best player leaving and a lot of money will be distributed through the lineup that should change a lot of the teams "DNA". But at the end of the day, it will require a lot of work from Treliving. We'll see. But JT on a good cap deal is not a bad thing at all.

It's from the GM, though...

But even if he did, trading him would still be an option because something has to change, and subtracting just Marner cannot be the only thing in terms of core changes, and if they think that's the only thing they need to do, they're fooling themselves.

Don't love the Patches rumour. Shocked me in the play-offs, but Tre has to get more creative. I wonder if Kane would consider Toronto. Close to Buffalo for his Dad, play with 34. Would slot in nicely on that top line. May end up back in Detroit.

Want: Marchand, P Kane, Donato

Fine with: Mangiapane, Granlund, P Suter, Beauvillier

Makes the team harder to play against: Jeannot, B Tanev

LOL. Malkin not captain material, just because the guy isn't loud doesn't make them captain material. That dude does his showing on the ice. That dude has carried Pittsburgh plenty of times. Jesus Christ.

1 core change is DNA change. His words didn't have any defined definition. You're just taking it like he meant he'd change the entire team, or at least part of the team you don't like. Some want Matthews traded. Some want some sort of rebuild. Some want a nuclear explosion of change, when they'll likely just reload a lot of those changes without Marner and probably other areas of the team. It's a little too early for all this since a lot can change day to day. Maybe Rielly will be punted too. Maybe they'll pull off a blockbuster. I dunno.

Removing JT for Suter is a change, but a likely terrible one. And then we'll wonder why we're still struggling. But hey... we changed something.

Yeah, I don't see how letting the second best player on this team that is an assistant captain and one of the face of the franchise, isn't a DNA change. You don't need to swap out everyone for it to be a DNA change.
