"With a little more forward depth, they could be a playoff threat."

Adding Tatar, Dom will rank them S+ Tier. And there is your dark horse, trendy pick for the 8th spot in the East.
Any statement with requires a condition and results in "could" is pretty damn meaningless.

Like the Rangers, the Devils' fortunes will rest on the development of their young players.

Could they have dated when they were kids & kissed back then, and then that other girl was some girl he dated, and he ended up getting back with his high school sweetheart? That tweet doesn't necessarily suggest they've been together for 11 years.

Although I do prefer the idea of Mika being some Persian prince with 6 wives.

Tatar always has good numbers, but he's softer than baby shit. There's a reason he's been scratched by different teams on their way to the Finals.
I mean if he goes to the Devils won’t have to worry about that whole playoff problem.

Where do we need it most? In the top 6?

At center, really.

And I'm not saying we "need," Eichel or someone like a top 5 center in the world who will score 90 points.

But we damn sure need at least a young, defensively responsible center with enough skill to get 60-70 points or so playing with a Panarin and/or Lafreniere.

We have plenty if it there. Lest you forget we got a #2 and a #1 OA in back to back years. Theres a budding top 6 C who has been buried on the 3rd line. We also have one of the top 5 players in the league and another guy who can score 40 in his sleep. Again, not really seeing where we lack the skill, theres a ton of it still remaining.

Even looking at the teams who have won Cups without elite center combos (and they are the minority), we lack a young ROR or Toews to anchor that spot down the middle for a decade-long run.

We added a bit of diversity (to this point, probably not enough. Not so much to the grit side of things but to the being able to actually do something when you don't have the puck side of things... Okay, I'm really just talking about Strome.) As currently constructed, this team will still be more than capable of lighting teams up on the Rush if they want to play that game.

They've taken some steps in order to create a group that can lean on their opponents. I'd like for them to do a bit more to ensure that they don't get lit up on the rush too but maybe thats coming.

Adding a bit is fine. I'd suggest we now have plenty.

Time for the focus to move back to finding young centers, which, since that is actually harder to do, we are long overdue to be trying to find.

I see this team being in a playoff spot, even if its a WC position, around the deadline. And at that time I can see this team adding the piece it needs down the middle to strengthen itself for the final push. Now that doesnt mean it has to be on the level of Eichel or Larkin because we have so much talent on the wings. It could be the perfect complimentary center.

Bottom line is they should not go all in on Eichel right now.

Drury is in the Eichel mix if Buffalo just says enough and we will take the best offer on the table. Just take the best deal and move on. It doesn't seem like Buffalo will be doing that. Eichel needs neck surgery. He wants the artificial disc replacement surgery while the Sabres want the acquiring team to assume those discussions. You deal with that. If Eichel is still a Sabre when training camp starts in 5-6 weeks, what happens with the surgery? The Sabres are being stubborn on the surgery. Just let the player have the surgery. A team isn't trading for Eichel and not allowing him to have the surgery. They will inherit the Sabres problem. I saw where the Wild would allow Eichel to have the disc surgery because that's his personal choice. Eichel got hurt on the Sabres watch. They don't want to assume any of the risk involved with the surgery. They don't want to retain any money. Give us all of your best assets and you worry about the guy with a bad neck.

Drury could be using the Eichel speculation in his contract discussions with Zibanejad's brother. The cap will be flat for this coming season and two more seasons. We want to keep Mika but we can make a deal for Eichel and move on from Mika. Eichel is younger. Aging curves. It will be hard to keep both players. We have to pay Shesterkin and Fox. If Kakko blows up this season, we have to deal with him next summer. If we can't make a deal with Mika, we will move on. That type of thing.

I read Zibanejad got married a few weeks ago. I don't think he wants to leave NY. His wife seems like the perfect Manhattan girl. I don't think she wants to live in Minnesota. She has been living with him in Manhattan for a while.

A little leverage doesn't hurt.
Wondering out loud if smith went to the wedding.

It's not hyperbole to say the rangers and leafs with Montreal right behind, are the most generally hated org in the league. Everyone but us wants them to not only lose, but be WRONG.
Everyone is focusing on the added grit as if we sacrificed a ton of skill for it when in reality the Rangers lost ONE important skill player and still are overflowing with skill.

Panarin, Lafreniere, Kakko, Kravtsov, Kreider, Zibanejad, Strome, Chytil. Yeah, truly a bunch of stiffs.

Oh yeah and 23 year old Norris winner Adam Fox.

We had a roster built basically entirely of skill the past few years and we were dog shit. Now we're still skill heavy but added some grit and toughness to the lineup and apparently now we're going to suck? Please.

His articles are very fact based. He doesn’t give hockey observations, but model discussions. Consider it a report and not an article and it works better.

Also don’t see how you call him a bad person though.

No one is claiming it doesn't matter.

It's just been forgotten that Zibanejad is 29 with a history of concussions and Strome is on the trade block, though.

We needed to get at least one if not two more young centers into our pipeline and we've deliberately ignored obvious solutions to this problem time and time again, mostly in favor of "winning now," or "toughness and grit," decisions.

We've ignored skill in favor of experience and toughness now for over a year. The time for the pendulum to swing back to a balanced approach has long since passed. This offseason has been ENTIRELY grit and toughness.

Example: Everyone liked signing Goodrow. Everyone hated trading Buch for Blais. Everyone liked signing Nemeth. Most people disliked passing up an obvious skilled center at 16 for a gritty winger.

It's grit, grit, grit, right now with this administration.

We have enough grit now. What we don't have is enough skill at forward, actually, until we have a couple of skilled young centers in the pipeline.

Again, we have plenty of fing skill. Top forwards, a Norris trophy winning Dman, and a top young goalie. Mika, Panarin, Kakko, Laf, Kravs, Chytil, Kreider, Fox, Shesty. The biggest question mark for this team is a bona fide 2C and there are still options out there to upgrade. Who said the moves were done? Mika is 29 but is still a legit 1C when healthy. Chytil has shown growth and is 22 and can be a fine 3c, maybe 2c if given the opportunity. There is still time and options for the continued building of the roster but right now this team is a playoff team.

Id love for us to forget about Eichel and just go with these guys this year. Imo we added what we were missing last year, i haven't watched Nemeth enough to base an opinion on him but if he is solid and Nils is what he should be his first year i like our lineup.

Laf zib Kakko
Panarin Strome kravtsov/Goodrow
Kreider Chytil Goodrow
Blais Rooney Reaves/Barron.

Miller Trouba
Lindgren Fox
Nemeth Lundkvist

The one thing that I don’t see posted enough is that the nhl rewards grit instead of pure hockey ability and there in lies the problem.
