Agreed. If he’s not available, then he’s not available. I don’t think the market will produce a team going over the top, though. Hell, Brock Nelson might not be available either. The Predators and Isles both seem ambivalent right now. It's a valid argument... in a vacuum... but the typical "market value" really means nothing here. O'Reilly isn't available. So if you want to somehow shake the foundations of that reality, you would need to come up with a significantly better offer. You need to offer a high-1st rounder + A-prospect. If you can't (and nobody would ever argue that you should for this player), then you just need to accept the insanity that lurks in Barry Trotz's brain and move on to seeking a different player. It is what it is. Sorry.
If you have time, use it. No one needs to make moves just yet, and how teams perform between now and the deadline will provide more clarity about who is a seller and who is a buyer, and what teams can afford to spend/trade away.
Teams sniffing for help will fall away as their chances dwindle, and teams holding out for a resurgence will throw in the towel as their clubs fail to make up needed ground. There’s time before the deadline for teams to shake loose, in both directions.
I think Trotz believes he put a good team together and that this is an aberration. If so, he might want to roll it back. We’ll see what he does or if someone makes it too tempting to turn down.
