Proposal: ROR to WSH for 1st, 2nd, Eriks Mateiko

It's a valid argument... in a vacuum... but the typical "market value" really means nothing here. O'Reilly isn't available. So if you want to somehow shake the foundations of that reality, you would need to come up with a significantly better offer. You need to offer a high-1st rounder + A-prospect. If you can't (and nobody would ever argue that you should for this player), then you just need to accept the insanity that lurks in Barry Trotz's brain and move on to seeking a different player. It is what it is. Sorry. :dunno:
Agreed. If he’s not available, then he’s not available. I don’t think the market will produce a team going over the top, though. Hell, Brock Nelson might not be available either. The Predators and Isles both seem ambivalent right now.

If you have time, use it. No one needs to make moves just yet, and how teams perform between now and the deadline will provide more clarity about who is a seller and who is a buyer, and what teams can afford to spend/trade away.

Teams sniffing for help will fall away as their chances dwindle, and teams holding out for a resurgence will throw in the towel as their clubs fail to make up needed ground. There’s time before the deadline for teams to shake loose, in both directions.

I think Trotz believes he put a good team together and that this is an aberration. If so, he might want to roll it back. We’ll see what he does or if someone makes it too tempting to turn down.

The Preds would waive a player like Lapierre at the earliest opportunity once he's eligible to be waived, and I don't understand why anybody thinks Trotz wants to bolster Milwaukee so badly with Ethan Bear? There is nothing whatsoever in any of these offers that is going to catch Trotz's ear. You are going to have to step it up to your Leonard/Miroschnichenko/Cristall types of prospects, find a way to acquire a higher 1st rounder, and... STILL it might not be enough. And that should tell you all you need to know... that O'Reilly simply isn't available. Because that's a totally insane ask, and yet... it's what Trotz will want. Sad, for all of us on all sides. O'Reilly isn't available. :(

Seems excessive that Preds would waive a player who doesnt need to go through waivers..?

Lapierre was MVP of AHL playoffs last season and had really strong campaign in NHL too. Was the best Caps player on the sweep out series against the Rangers.

Sophomore slump is real, but he has potential to be good.

If you like Mateiko more, sure. Lapierre has more value and many on our board value him over Mironischenko. But sounds like ROR isnt avaivable for the 1st+ package so no need to go down this road. I dont think it makes any sense for Caps to ”up it” and go over market value. And i get why Predators wants to keep ROR, he is a keeper.

I mean next year, Lapierre just hasn't shown enough in the NHL that the Preds would consider him to be "ready" yet. We have some PTSD here. If the Preds got him, he'd be re-signed at the league minimum for next season, then either waived or traded for a 2028 4th round pick, because the Preds just roll like that. You shouldn't take any offense. That's just the way the Preds handle players like that. :(

Trotz was a huge part of our cup, but some could say he didnt do favours for our young guys like Siegenhalert and Stephenson etc, so i kind of get it :)

And looking at what Predators did in the summer, its understandable they value ready over maybe.

Really? A first, a second? Did you watch Mateiko in the WJC?

Pass, fine. But those are good assets, period.
Really. The upcoming draft's really weak, those are probably a 2nd + a 3rd in a proper draft year. Mateiko at WJC? Saku Mäenalanen was the best goal scorer at WJC back in his day and look how that turned out.

Without insulting any teams making offers, I just think it has to be re-iterated to the Rest Of The World how inane Barry Trotz's view of his team is. He really thinks his team can still make the playoffs THIS season, or that they can turn it around and contend next season. And that O'Reilly is a key component to that.

Those are the real issues here. So it's not entirely the fault of external observers who come around and think "oh, the Preds are in the basement and heading towards a lengthy rebuild... they probably want to sell off some veteran assets". That's what most normal people would think. If they weren't following the team closely.

Just... it's not how things are viewed in Nashville atm AT ALL. A 1st + 2nd + interesting B prospect might be totally normal and a good offer in other circumstances. But it's just totally inadequate and even probably "laughable" in the current Trotzian mindset, alas. :(

I see. A first is now a second, a second is now a third.

Who can argue with this logic.

This is more than ROR brought back the first time he was dealt.

I wouldn't hate it, but I also think there are targets that make much more sense for the Caps

The package is good, I think the problem is (from the fans standpoint) is that the Preds already have 3 first round picks. A late 1st as the showcase of a return with additional picks isn't that enticing. I'm not saying that's what Trotz is thinking (well, nobody knows what Trotz is thinking, even Trotz), but feedback from fans when a late 1st is offered for one of our best trade chips is going to be "meh".

This would have no bearing on the Trotz decision making process (however inane that may be) - but I'd imagine the Caps might be open to trading a 2026 1st (with some protection) as opposed to a 2025 1st for the right target.

Edit: Yep, I'm dumb, just ignore this.

What possible protections on the 26 1st would make it more appealing for the Caps to move over what right now is pretty much guaranteed to be 25oa+
